How did I miss out on the nerd thread???

Ok, I've been to ComicCon every year since I was 14.
I'm obsessed with Battlestar Galactica
I am a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan
I play video games daily and currently own a PS2, PS3, Game Cube, Wii and an Xbox 360.
I know way too much about computers and I'm the one my family calls when things go wrong.
I am covered in tattoos of comic book characters.
And last but not least, I spend WAY too much time on the internet.

Yes, I'm a geek through and through but I wouldn't change one single thing.

Doesn't this get annoying sometimes? Sure, I'm glad to help out, but it gets annoying after a time with some people.

Oh my goodness YES, it gets so annoying. I love my family and I'm always happy to help, but there's a limit. I ended up moving 2000 miles away from my entire family and now they call me with the questions. I had to set up half of my family with screen sharing just so I could get into their computer from afar to check out what's going on. I love them all to death though.

Ok, there was a post in the gamer group about how good the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was. My husband & I actually went to the movies to see it. We haven't been there for years! It's based on a graphic novel. Kinda a cross between comic & video game. Great soundtrack, too. Here's the preview:

I Love this thread:

1. I programmed computers using punch cards
2. I programmed computers when the save was to cassette tapes
3. I have played main frame games (ala War Games)
4. Played with the original D&D game, I mean the very first issue. Was a Master Dungeon Master
5. I re-wrote the system language for the Apple 2 by discovering stuff they didn't know
6. There isn't a computer system or video games system I haven't played
7. My DS is a constant companion
I will stop before I embarrass myself any more ;)

And I know all too well dreaed go to computer geek for friends and family

Long live the nerds and geeks. And Cowboy, I love your sig - yep I was able to read it right off LOL

You guys are baby nerds, My first computer was a big metal box that when you took the cover off was the keyboard, had only an orange screen and came with two games Pong and something else I cant remember.
The second one was a keyboard from TI called a TRS 800 that you hooked up to a small TV (not a computer screen) and had to program

My fist computer was desk unto itself, everything built in.
Tiny PINK monochrome screen, no hardive, NO games, and the floppy diskettes were like 9 or 12 inches - two vertical drives that were placed where one would normaly place drawers in a desk.
It had a cover, but i don't recall it being metal.
Much later I got a Celecovision Adam, had cassette drives, and eventually floppy diskettes and games.
Did have a TI-something that plugged into the television, later model, accepted cartridges with programs and games.
Never owned a modern computer I did not assemble, aside from a crappy laptop -that I upgraded with slightly less crappy parts.

I still have the Atari my parents got brand new in 1978, and still play it, my favorite game being freeway (the game that Frogger ripped off). I own many many game systems and games, Dreamcast being one of my favorites, Xbox 360 being the current winner. I'd play a lot more Super Nes, but that console started acting up. Final Fantasy, up until X - it starting going downhill then, favorite being FF VIII (maybe old-school FF III - which I play on my Gameboy still.) Bring on the Metroid! Old-school Zelda anything before the N64, except the side-scrolling one. I once beat the (at the time) world record score for Gameboy Tetris, only to have my pictures
[proof of score] not come out, and some one beat my score by a lot a week or so later.

There's some AD&D and Magic the Gathering, but I've outgrown them, but still have a sh--ton of cards.

Someone mentioned Galactica - I've got the whole thing on dvd, watched many times.

And since no one started the fight yet: Captain Picard was better than Kirk.

(Actually Janeway was best of the three, unless you count the new Kirk, and then I'll reconsider my statements.)

i'm not so much a computer/video game geek as much as a car geek. i've got performance figures for damn near every car out there committed to memory, not to mention being able to check engine codes with a paper clip. i've had people from all over the country call and ask what's wrong with their Taurus. i've hand built several modifications in my garage without any special tools. my wife makes fun of me until i bring up the fact that she can quote The Breakfast Club from start to finish.

so with all this geekiness and nerds, we're well set in the PIF group. lol.

now for a serious question, I am raising a third generation nerd, who has asked for an original Nintendo... he's 6 but he loves the original, I told him we'll see what we can do, but they don't sell it anymore. He thought Santa would have an old toy section where maybe there was one stashed away that he forgot to deliver like "a million years ago, when nintendo was cool", so in SEPTEMBER we had to write a letter to santa to move his fat .... and find the kid a nintendo and games. Any chance someone would know where to get one? Keep in mind Ebay scares me because the system is older, and I don't know if they all work or not....

Try the pawn shops in your area. They may have one stuck back in a corner somewhere.

Pawn shops, flea markets, and thrift stores...I think I've seen a Nintendo or two at our local thrift stores in the past. Nice thing is the pawn shops and thrift stores will allow you to hook it up to see if it works.

Gamestop stopped officially carrying them a while ago, look for an independent store, there's one in my town that even has the Chinese rip-off consoles that play Nes games, they have one for super Nes - even one that plays both. If I Recall correctly, they are only like $20-30. Something very similar to this.
I am big fan of emulators also, but that is for a whole other discussion.

A friend of mine has this: Amazon.com: NES/SNES/Genesis FC3 Plus Gaming System: Video Games which is a NES/SNES/Sega Genesis all-in-one console. You plus the old school controllers and use the same cartridges, it's just a company making something brand new to play old games. We use my friends all the time and it works great.

Also, if you were open to getting a Wii, you could buy the classic controller and most of the good games from the 8-bit nintendo days are available for download through their virtual console. I think they run about $5 per game for NES games and I've had a blast playing through old games again that way.

At least with either of these two options you know the system will be brand new. If he is really wanting the original system then it's going to be tough to find one new.

Good luck! Sounds like you've got a pretty cool little one brewing there.
