So I have a tooth with a deep cavity, actually its a broke of tooth with a giant gaping hole. The nerves are dying and each time one dies it feels like someone stabbing me in the ear deep down in the canal where the ear nerves and molar nerves meet. Some of the most excruciating pain I have ever felt. It doesn't throb but its a constant unrelenting sharp pain. Tylenol, aspirin, Ibuprofen all them can't touch it. The only relief I get is by numbing it with icy cold water or by vaping. I have an appointment to get it pulled next month.

So my question is this, does nicotine stimulate and relax nerves? Because its seriously helped my tooth pain. I am currently vaping 24 mg Nic on an Aspire ET-S with MVP 2

It's probably the warmth from the vapor, watch out though, vaping just like smoking can cause dry socket.

I understand. I do a mouth to lung inhale. My inner cheeks are fat it protects that tooth from the air or any sucking motion. I have had several teeth pulled before and know all the ways to prevent dry socket. :) I guess you could say I am a pro at this. :)

Hey I smoked after having 3 pulled, I get it, lol. Just wanted to give fair warning, lol. Some people don't realized it is more of the sucking on something than the actual smoke or vape that causes the issue. Best of luck, I'm just coming off an abscess myself. I see your from Georgia, as a neighbor in Alabama, you know how well the dental system works down here. I bet you probably grew up on well water too right, lol.

Sorry just realized I read it wrong your from Al too, I know you get it, lol. Which Woodland, I'm in Lickskillet, north of Hunstville.

I have had recurring trouble with my teeth for years (since before vaping) and one thing I've found that really (amazingly) helps is clove oil. It addresses pain AND fights bacteria! I bought a bottle at GNC for $8 and mix 8 to 10 drops with 1 tablespoon olive oil then rub it *everywhere* in the painful area. More pain, more frequent applications. Here's some info from (of all places!) the Colgate site:

"The New York Times recently took a closer look at clove oil as an alternative remedy. The essential oil has been shown to have analgesic and antibacterial properties—making it a useful tool in treating bacteria-caused toothaches.

However, it’s questionable whether clove oil will appeal to patients, said the Times.

“It has a strong and sometimes unpleasant taste, and if large quantities are accidentally ingested, it too can have side effects. But it was widely used in dentistry before the advent of more commercial anesthetics, and research shows it works thanks to its active ingredient, eugenol, the same compound responsible for the plant’s aroma,” wrote columnist Anahad O’Connor.

"Mr. O’Connor cited a 2006 report in the Journal of Dentistry that split patients into four groups with each having clove gel, benzocaine, a placebo resembling the clove gel, or a placebo resembling benzocaine applied to their gums. Needlesticks were applied after five minutes. The placebos did not numb the tissue against pain, but the clove and benzocaine—with very little difference shown between clove gel and benzocaine."

Here's a link to the Colgate site: http://www.colgate.com/en/us/oc/oral-health/basics/selecting-dental-products/article/ada-03-clove-oil-may-alleviate-tooth-pain. I didn't bother to look up the original NYT article, since it's behind a paywall for me.

Meanwhile, though the article says the taste is "unpleasant", I find it really compliments Snickerdoodle and cinnamon vapes -- and it really helps any little flare-ups I may have with my gums. Last year, I had to have antibiotics 3 or 4 times; this year: none. Thank you, clove oil.

@balance , @anavidfan , @AttyPops , and @papergoblin Thank you!!! I've had teeth problems my whole life. No enamel from poor genes, bio mom had all her teeth pulled in her 20s like I am having to do now so I can get dentures. I would try clove oil but I need to go somewhere where I can find a GNC, maybe order some online.
I thought I read somewhere about the vaso constrictor thing. Just wasn't sure. :) Y'all surely were a big help. :nun:

Yikes, I know what you are going thru, Hope you can get it pulled out, the oral surgeons here charge about $160 for that, a regular dentist much much less. ($95-110).

My solution is to see an endodontist, for a root canal, even if I have to ration groceries and gasoline for a few months but yours sounds like it might not be salvageble.

Hope you get it taken care of soon, that kind of thing can put some bad infection into your body and a great strain on your heart!

Just so you know, you don't really *need* a great dentist to do an extraction. That is the very first thing they teach you in dental school. Most any recent grad can extract a tooth, esp. if the roots are not curled and long and stuck somehow into your jawbone in a strange way.

I would not wait a month! Really, just about anybody can do an extraction UNLESS you need an oral surgeon for some reason.

I don't doubt you must be in excrutiating pain! OMG

LIsten, as a temporary solution for relief, try this,it REALLY works!

Ive had horrible cavities, abscesses in the roots etc., that have hit -of course- in the middle of the night,on weekends (despite having spent so much time & $$$ at the dentist's ever since I was kid...what can I say...everyone has their weak spot healthwise and this one def runs in the family ;))

At those times Ive taken tons of Advil and even codeine w/paracetamol, id like take two, still hurt, an hour later take two more, still hurt...ive gone up to taking 8+ that way over a few hours and felt...zonked out...BUT still feeling the pain!!!!!

GET some high quality CLOVE essential oil,put a few drops on a wet piece of cotton rolled up into a ball and, if you can, put it inside the cavity/hole in your tooth.

It should totally numb the pain within 5-10 minute and...youll finally feel some relief,I was finally able to sleep I was SO grateful!

If you cant stand at first to put into the cavity/hole then first take a large piece of wet cotton and put two or three(no more) drops on THAT and place it around the tooth/ gum area near the problem as best you can .
keep it there for 15-20 min and it should numb the area enough to allow you to put a piece of cotton in the top of th e hole dont push it in too far.You can keep the cotton ball in the hole for a few hours before changing.(dont push in too far, juts enough to close up the hole and so it doesnt fall out...usually it ends up falling out but if it doesnt remove with tweezers when its time to "change"..you'll know when, youll feel the pain slowly returning ;)

Clove works best BUT if you dont have any or cant get any it will work to some extent with Tea tree essential oil or with Peppermint or even lavender if you only have that as a last resort (Make sure it is highest quality" Lavandula angustifolia " only)

I sometimes add 2 drops of the peppermint just because its the only decent tasting one, the others taste pretty awful....

Make sure of course that youre not allergic to any of these things before using (ie. clove, peppermint)

Of course this is just a suggestion that worked for me to stop the pain enough so I could sleep/make it through the night/day until I could see a dentist so please take this advice for what it is, Im not a doctor,Im just sharing what has worked well for me and friends and family members with similar probs ;) ...BUT it really does bring pain relief, better than advil etc!

Dunno about vaping, I imagine it may be the nicotine...but to be honest during these episodes I dont think I even smoked/vaped i was in such a bad state :(

Best of luck to you :) ,I know how awful it is...tooth pain is the worst and when the nerves are touched.......YIKES!
