When you enter or manage your ingredients, you need to enter the grams per ml and drops per ml. Where do you get those? By careful measurement of each one?
I don't use drops for any measurements but I did set my drops/ml to 30 for most of my ingredients. As you are probably aware the drops can vary depending on the dropper being used.
For grams/ml, I am not that much into accuracy but I did measure a few of my ingredients and found them to be about 1.04 grams/ml. I measured 10ml of the ingredients that I measured and then divided by 10 to get the grams/ml. I use 1.04 for all of my PG ingredients including PG. It may not be 100% accurate but it does allow me to be consistent when recreating recipes. I have my VG weight set at 1.260 grams/ml.

Right now, if I have a flavor that has a PG base I use the density of PG which is 1.036 g/ml - that goes in "Grams per ml" field. I don't really do anything with drops. If I had a flavor mixed only with VG then I use the density of VG which is 1.261 g/ml.

If you need to figure out the density of 2 liquids mixed together then you can use the formula in the link below -- in Equation 7 and Example A.
Chapter 4

But this only gives a temporary figure until you find the actual final density of your liquid. So the way to determine the final density of 2 or more liquids is to physically measure it. Take an exact ml of fluid, put it on the scale - that's your density. Or take 5 or 10 ml, weigh it and divide by 5 or 10.

For drops, you would also count actual drops until you get a ml. But you have to use that same type dropper every time. That's why I don't worry about drops.

So that's the way. Unless someone has a better idea.

You might try emailing where you get your flavors from. They should know. I saw some MSDS sheets? I think, from somewhere, The Flavor Apprentice? I don't know but they didn't have a density number.

I read how friendly and helpful the owner of Wizard Labs is, where I buy my nic, and asked him for the final density of his product of 100 mg/ml in PG, but so far, a deafening silence... Oh well, I'll measure it myself.

I hope this helps.

Thanks HotRod. Those are the same numbers I am using. I don't know where I got them, but it makes me feel better to see you confirm them. Thanks. And great program.

HotRod,
Did you ever come out with a mac or linux version of calculator?

I would like to however it would be a timely learning experience and would also require almost a total rewrite. There are people running it on Macs using some sort of Windows emulation software. It was referenced earlier in the thread.

I've read all pages of this thread and it's in there somewhere... someone saying they're running it on some windows emulator and it worked fine.

I just posted a new version, V4.0.0.6.

The updates include:
  1. Moved the “Tools->Backup options” window to a tab in the “Tools->Options” window.
  2. An exception was being thrown when exporting a recipe to Excel if the recipe name contained special characters that Excel doesn’t allow. Fixed by replacing the special characters with a “_”.
  3. Also an exception would be thrown when exporting a recipe to Excel when the recipe name was greater than 31 characters. Fixed by truncating the recipe name.
  4. Added a new feature to allow ingredients to be categorized. When ingredients have a “category name” associated with them, the list of ingredients displayed in the ingredient drop down list on the main recipe window will show the ingredients in a folder type structure. If you want to use this feature you will need to:
    • Update your ingredients in the “Manage Ingredients” window and assign a “Category name” to the ingredient.
    • Go to the “Tools->Options->Ingredient defaults” and check the “Display ingredients by category”.
    • When enabled, the first X number of items listed in the ingredient drop down list will be the category names that you defined. You will need to select the category to view the ingredients defined for that category.
    • When you are viewing the ingredients defined in the category the first item in the list will be an item that when clicked, will take you back to main ingredient list.
I am looking for feedback on the “Category” change. I am not sure I like the way it works. This feature was requested and this was the only idea I could come up with.

Rolling back to beta, not being able to type the first few letters to either add a flavor, or to find one is a deal breaker. hope you can find a way to re-implement this, not a big deal with just a few flavors, but when you have as many in my list as I do, it is a huge Pain to scroll through to find what your looking for, or to have to open the manage window to add a new addition.

HotRod, I've been using the calculator for a while now and it's a great tool. I Just downloaded the new version and was looking into the inventory management. When you print your list of ingredients, should the inventory amount be on the list? It would be helpful so you can get a quick glance at the amount of each flavor you have. Are there any warnings when a flavor get's down to a certain level? Something like a 'reorder reminder'. Thanks for all the hard work on this. Been loving mixing by weight.

Well, I think you're on the right track and I, for one, really appreciate the effort and time you're putting in to this!
This may be overkill, but I thought I'd open up a discussion for ingredient categories/subdivisions. How would you feel about 5 levels to your category system? Here's a quick rundown on how I'd do this. First, the 3 top levels:

  1. Base - this would be PG, VG, Distilled Water, PGA, and Nic
  2. Flavoring - Only flavor concentrates in here
  3. Adjuncts - sweeteners, saline, EM, Lemon, ACV, Magic Mask, Bitter Wizard, and so on.
Under the Base category, would be my 2nd level of PG, VG, Distilled Water, PGA, and Nic, 3rd would be the manufacturer's description, and 4th the Manufacturer, and 5th my Vendor.

For the Flavoring category, my 2nd level of would be flavoring type (beverage, dessert, baking, candy, etc), 3rd would be the manufacturer's description, and 4th the Manufacturer, and 5th the Vendor.

Finally, for the Adjunct category, my 2nd level of would be adjunct type (sweeten, sour, mask, enhance), 3rd would be the manufacturer's description, and 4th the Manufacturer, and 5th the Vendor.

Examples:

Category 1Category 2Category 3Category 4Category 5
BaseVGPure Glycerin USPCVSCVS
BaseVGGlycerin USPHumcoWalmart
BasePGPropylene GlycolElement 6Amazon

AdjunctSweetenEZ-SweetzEZ-SweetzEZ-Sweetz

Again, I understand this may be more than most would use, but it would help me keep items with similar names separate and also keep track of the vendor from where I last purchased it. Anyway, food for thought...:)

I like your idea a lot rkitek - but I think that might be a bit unwieldy to navigate. Having metadata fields for those, and ones that you can filter like image or music metadata, would be valuable, though.

As far as the UI navigation, I propose a solution more like this, so you don't have to go in and out of categories, you can just mouse over them:

That way, people can organize their juices however they like but still have easy access to the whole list. And then we users can treat the whole list of flavors like a bookmarks bar: add folders as desired, and subfolders within them.

finally got all my flavs entered and about 5 recipes loaded up i find it to be an awesome tool , the best things so far ia my flavs are in alphabetical order my old calc. did not do that what a pain , the inventory and cost are sweet if i were ask what to add i think it would be when mixing to have check mark boxes beside each ingredient i dont always go straight down the line when mixing and to just have each box to check off would keep me from double dipping lol thanks hotrod for all you do this vapes for you
