When "Volume Calculation" is unchecked the calculator performs like every other calculator, it doesn't matter if you have water, alcohol or anything else in your recipe. The only difference is that the calculator doesn't produce negative numbers and force you to figure out what is wrong. Instead it will calculate the recipe as close as it can and produce a message telling you what is wrong and in the results area of the calculator it will tell you the percentages of the final mix. When calculating the recipe the calculator will use the "Precedence" value and first calculate the amount of that ingredient (PG or VG) and then try to add the amount of the other ingredient.
Diyguy, post: 16409862, member: 258081"]Here's the scenario that still has me scratching my head (with Vol Calc check marked):

1. Increase the VG on a recipe from 70% to 75%. The ml and gr values of PG and VG update as expected. No errors, as you're still within acceptable range.
As you increased the VG percentage to 75, the PG percentage dropped to 25. PG + VG can never be more than 100%.
2. Now, change the VG BACK to the original 70%. The recipe values DON'T change back. ??? Why is this? VG is now listed at 70% in the editable field, but the recipe still reflects the 75% in the Total % column and bottom summary. The user now mixes what he thinks is a 70/30 batch, but gets a 75/25 mix.
PG + VG can be less than 100%. Your PG is sitting at 25% and you dropped the VG to 70%. You have the "VG Precedence" checked which is like saying that you want to use extra VG to fill the recipe up to its 100% mark. Because PG is at 25%, any VG setting between 0 and 75% will result in a 75% VG mixture. The summary area (results) will show you the final percentages of the recipe.
3. This state is saved, and reappears when the recipe is loaded again later. Unless the user keeps a close eye out, he could mix the wrong percentage.
The calculator saved your recipe and recalculated it the same way when redisplayed. I would be concerned if the calculator didn't calculate it the same every time.
Unchecking Volume Calculation resolved the issue, but with it checked (as default) the ingredient values don't update in the above scenario. Is this expected?

I guess I can leave Volume Calculation unchecked... I don't add anything but VG, PG, and flavors (no water, etc). I'll look up some of the previous posts. Thanks.
It is expected as described above. With it unchecked it works like every other calculator.
EDIT: I see after re-reading your message that the VG/PG percents will adjust only when their sum is > 100%. Ok... I guess that's what I'm seeing. I guess as long as I have Volume Calculation unchecked I'm good. I realize this isn't a beginner's program, but it seems that with Vol. Calc. check marked as the default, newbies to the program (like me) may encounter this and be confused.

EDIT2: With "Volume Calculation" checked, The VG/PG percentage behavior that I'm dwelling on can be avoided by only INCREASING percentages of either VG or PG, never decreasing them. As long as I remember to do that, everything updates and stays in sync, so to speak. I think I'll leave Vol. Calc. check marked. :) Sorry to belabor this. I like the program a lot! Thanks.
The sole purpose of the volume calculation is to tell you exactly what your resulting mixture is. It won't tell you that you have an 20/80 PG/VG mix if you added 10% water, it will tell you that you have a 20/70 PG/VG mix. You won't have to figure out why your VG based juice is thinner than expected. The formulas used are:

Unchecked (all calculators): PG% = PG volume / (PG volume + VG volume). VG% = 100 - PG%.

Checked: PG% = PG volume / total volume of mix. VG% = VG volume / total volume in mix.

You are right, the calculator should default to "Volume calculation" being unchecked. I have changed it for the next version and all new installs will default to unchecked.

Is there a way to print a list of the recipes, without the ingredients? Basically I just want a list of all the recipe names I have.
I am working on a change that will list all recipes in a grid and allow you to easily copy the recipes and their values and paste into another application, such as notepad.

Version 6.0.1.0 is available for download. There are two changes:

  1. The "Volume Calculation" in the options window will default to unchecked for all first time installations on a PC.
  2. There is a new option, "Tools->Display recipes". This opens a window that displays each of your recipes in a row of a grid. You can select cells and copy the values to an external application such as Notepad. After you select cells, right-click and choose "Copy". If you right click a column heading, all values in that column will be selected. If you right-click a row heading, all values in that row will be selected.

The date printed on labels is the current date. Any chance an option for date could be added to use the "Last made on" date? Just wondering. Thanks.
It could be done but it might conflict with another option. There is an option to update the last made date when a recipe is printed.

    I freaking love this calculator.

Okay, now that I've said that, how do I use the portable setup correctly - or should I even use it at all? I have my main desktop computer that I work at, and a small laptop/tablet combo that I like to use at my "flavor lab" desk. In fact, that's why I bought it. I want to be able to have the same information available on both computers at once. Current inventory, new recipes, etc. Say if I input a recipe on my desktop, then go over to my laptop at my desk to make the recipe.

I have a OneDrive account with more than adequate space, and was thinking about using that. Can I use the OneDrive account to make a folder specifically for the juice Calculator data files and just use the default directories for the program files? Basically, just install the program on each computer and then use the OneDrive for the working directories and files.

    Thanks!

When you use the portable setup you want to make sure that you change the location of where the calculator is installed. You could change it to your OneDrive folder. The computer you are installing it from will place the appropriate shortcut icon on your desktop. From other computers that share the OneDrive account, just create a shortcut pointing to the executable file on the mounted OneDrive.
When you launch the calculator from a portable installation, all of the settings and your shopping list are stored in the portable installation folders making them available to all of the PCs that are sharing the OneDrive account.
When you open an existing juice file or create a new juice file you will want to do a "File->Save As" and save the juice file on the mounted OneDrive. Now you will have your juice file, settings and shopping list all stored on the OneDrive account and available to all PCs.

If you use the standard installation you can save the juice file to the OneDrive account and it will be available to all PCs but the settings and shopping list will be unique for each of the PCs.

This is too cool! Installed the portable version to my OneDrive folder on my desktop and created a portable folder. Saved the juice file there. Loaded it on the laptop/tablet from the OneDrive folder. No installation needed, and it is fully operational synced with the desktop. YES!

Oh, and thanks for the time and effort you've put into making such a great piece of software!

Is there an option to make a VENDOR drop down list somewhere - like for the MANUFACTURER option? I couldn't seem to find anything in the help file. If not, it would be a very useful item to have for inventory and pricing purposes. I get wholesale pricing through Capella, but say I want to buy from somewhere else - say, a single flavor to complete an order to get free shipping. I have FA flavors from 3 different vendors right now, as well as CAP.

Ever since I installed windows 10 my calculator crashes randomly
Can you send me some details of the crash? When the exception occurs it should display a window giving you the option to click a details button. Would you take some screen shots of the details and send them to me (email or private message). Also, what screen were you on and what was the last thing you did prior to the crash?

I have made a change that will be available in the next version. You will still enter vendors in the shopping list like you do today however the program will remember previously entered vendors. The vendor field will be a dropdown list. You can either select a vendor from the list or begin typing a new vendor. As you enter the vendor you will see a list of suggestions appear that you can select or you can ignore and enter your new vendor.

Oh, one more thing, does the shopping list Vendor field use the same data as the ingredients/inventory vendor field? I have a few of the same flavors that I get from different vendors.
Yes, it will use the same vendor list that appears in the shopping list.

With the next version of the calculator the "Last made date" will appear on the printout. The printout will still include the current date but on the same line the last made date will be printed (if there is a value for the date).
