Good info! There's something VIP to this. A poster (Griz) on another forum has talked about the blue flame. Even on our stove tops, there is the blue flame and the orange flame to be aware of.

I use a lighter or my BBQ pot flame. Just burn the cra out of it the burn juice on it a few time. :)

This is a bit frightening. I'm going to say this, and please don't accuse me of exaggerating: once I have a SS center pin and nuts, the DID will be a perfect device. It's scary, isn't it? Having an actual perfect device?!....

Thanks, Jim, for listening and putting in the effort to provide SS center pins:toast:

This is a piece of excellent information.. I think i have carbonized the wick as you mentioned.

I do have some questions:

(1) how high a temperature are we talking about? I used a cheap blow torch that gave up on me and had to use the flame on my gas stove. Is this hot enough? I did repeat the process like 5-6 times of heating and quenching.

(2) Can we tell by its physcial appearence if the wick is oxidized or carbonized?

(3) Before my cheap blow torch gave way, i build my first DID wick with it (scott bonner's method). It turned my juice black.
So i assume even my blow torch was not hot enough.

Thanks for the time and effort taken to post this information. Kudos!

Hi Galaxy3, I use this propane torch and it works great for me. Before I roll my mesh I torch it 6 times on each side for about 1 minute each time. This is probably overkill but as everyone here has stated- the wick is the most important aspect to get right and this has worked for me.

Well I don't know how to post pic on iPad, but it is a Coleman propane bottle like for camp stoves (16.4oz) and I have a "screw on" top piece that controls the gas and it has a trigger.

Just read about all the new goodies coming. Great news Jim but I'm likely gonna go broke buying too many of your goods.
Out of curiousity, I made a coil today using another method I read about somewhere. Using a long very thin straight pin I wrapped the coil rather tightly around both the pin and coil then pulled out the needle. The result was pretty close to a perfectly spaced coil. Needed an ever so slight adjustment after firing it up but the technique seems to work. Perhaps another entry for the Encyclopedia DID.

Another thing. I've wrapped coils both clockwise and counter-clockwise and could not discern any difference in performance. I do believe either way will work as long as it's done properly and with the correct tension.

Ok, so I'm going to apologize up front. I haven't read through the 295 pages to see if the answer is already there. I'm just going to ask. I made a new wick and coil and they keep immediately popping between the center post and the mesh. I can't figure it out. I have made it three times and the same. Mesh isn't touching anything except the hole it goes in. Coils are not touching anything. First it popped doing dry burn so I wet it with pg before firing and immediately pops.

First, I do recommend spending the time to read entire thread. I know it sounds daunting, but, I am sure your current problem and other questions would surly be solved. That said, what gage of mesh, and kanthal are you using. Have you properly oxidized the wick. What battery mod are you using, can you get an ohm reading from a meter before firing. Be as specific as possible, we are here to help. Again, I can't recommend strongly enough, read this thread!

As Ricklyncore suggested, there is a ton of info in the thread regarding set up, and +1 on more specific's. Voltage, wire size, ohms/ wraps, how the mesh was oxidized, etc. Pictures would help too.

I just checked my tracking and it looks like I'm getting my DID today!

The one thing I'm worrying about it properly oxidizing my wick. This will be my first time doing it and right now I do not have straight PG to use after I torch it.

Is it ok just use some juice to wet the wick after torching it? And then retorch?
Sorry if this is a noob question. I'm going to keep reading the thread for more info. I know the size of the mesh that you should cut it a couple pages back. I wish I was compiling all this info like Mr Mann .. Lol

I have a question:
I realize that every wrap can turn out a little bit differently. It takes just a *tweak* to adjust for shorts of any kind. A short can produce symptoms such as a lack of vapor and even a lack of flavor. Correct?
With that said. Why would a *short* reduce the flavor? I understand how it could reduce vapor, but not flavor. I do not have a short of any kind in my DID right now, and I'm in 7th heaven. But, what about my next wrap... what if ... omg... what if I lack flavor because of a dumb short. Where would this short most likely be located? Is it one of the more difficult to find shorts?
A troubleshooting video would be cool too. :)

All over the place
~All links take you directly to the post. I consolidated question/answers to the answer posts (most have the original question quoted). There very well may be some mistakes contained within these numerous links, so if you find one, what you can do is edit this page by quoting it and deleting the quote tags; add an asterisk by the rectified link--do this as well if there is additional info that you think should be included ***. (Or, if you want to create a post specifically to link in The Index.) Of course a lot was left out, but I tried to keep it as neat as possible so as to not put too much advanced and or redundant information (but there will be some) in The Index. This can and should be a working Index and all I ask is that you respect the time and work that went into it. If Jim wants to open a new thread so this can be constantly revised there, it may keep this thread cleaner. This was made by me for the novice Genesis users and as a gift to Jim, but if you are confident that something should not be included or should be added, just do it like I DID it. --Mr.Mann

Congrats! You're going to love it!
It's perfectly okay to douse with any flavor you have, then light it up with a Bic lighter and let it burn out naturally, repeat 3x.
Here is Scott's video on the DID and I believe he shows this step. (but he skipped the wire annealing in this video to shorten the video. Before you wrap the wire around the mesh, be sure to run the wire over your Bic lighter to burn off any manufacturing oils and to make it more pliable. Some folks like to skip that step altogether, it's up to the individual of course).

Editing The Index: reply with quote, click Go Advanced, then click the Switch Editor to WYSIWYG Mode button (directly above the bold button--its the one with two "A"s), and you will be able to view and edit The Index as it normally appears (without all the coding garble). I hope this makes sense.
