One thing I did to stop that is wrap the coil once between the brass nuts on the post. And when you do that, make sure you put just the right pressure on the wire. Once that's done, wet burn the coil in short bursts to start with and slowly increasing the time for a while until the wire gets oxidized and then the hot spot won't happen anymore. Keep dripping the juice on the coil while you are wet burning.

Could you also pre-oxidize the piece of coil you intend to wrap?

Jim - just a suggestion for the website. In case of fumble-fingered people (me, for example ), maybe offer a rebuild/repair kit. The allen screws, o-rings, knurled nuts & center post as one item in a 'kit'. I know sooner or later, I'll drop something & lose it :tumble:.
Eagerly awaiting my 2nd DID.

I also am awaiting my 2nd DID - for anyone who is on the fence about this, better grab one while you can. These are relatively new and when the word gets out more, these will take off and be hard to get with everyone buying one.

This.
I'm now kicking myself for not having ordered a 2nd one. Won't make that mistake again when the short kit and mini's come out.

Here is where I got mine. I got the mesh in 12"X12"(available in smaller pieces). The vendor for the Kanthal is out of stock for the moment but usually restocks within a week or so. Hope this helps

400X400 mesh... WOVEN WIRE MESH STAINLESS STEEL 400 MESH 12"X12" FILTRATION | eBay

325X325 mesh... WOVEN WIRE MESH STAINLESS STEEL 325 MESH 12"X12" FILTRATION | eBay

Kanthal... Kanthal A-1 32 awg resistance heating wire 75 ft, | eBay

Marty

So are both the 400x400 mesh and 325x325 mesh needed? Or do you basically use one or the other? Also, is 32 awg the preferred kanthal to get? Or will another size work?

Super T has delrin wide mouth tips. I like the tanbur tip myself. The DID is shipped with a nice delrin tip which is a pleasure to use. I switch back and forth between the 2.
Ordered 6/4, no shipping notification yet :( went ahead and placed another order anyway. dspin recommended using a wide-mouth straight drip tip but I can't use the metal ones. I saw that Scott used a white one in his video,( delrin maybe?)any idea where I can find one like that? Thanks!

You could and I did run it once through the flame before wrapping. It doesn't do you a whole lot of good though or so it seems to me. I had one of my prev coils through flame a bunch of times and added pg liquid on it and burned it a bunch of times an it didn't work out so well for me. It took me a few tries to get the perfect pressure on the coil around the wick and then the wet burning the crap out of it worked for me.

Couple of things that I learned int he process :
1) For your first wicks, if you think you have it pretty well oxidized, then burn them some more. Over do it. That helps.
2) Folding the edge of the mesh before rolling it works well as it avoids the stray metal fibers that could stick out and cause a short.
3) The mesh size that's working for me is 42 mm by 35 mm. It's a little thinner than what Jim recommends, but I am getting no dry hits and wicking is very good.
4) I roll it over a standard toothpick and then remove the pick and use your fingers to get them compact. This gets you a perfectly cylindrical wick.

Hope these help someone to avoid a lot of frustration.

A-1 is the grade of Kanthal. It is an alloy that produces the right temp we need for vaping. I will try and find some 32 awg Kanthal for you.
Can someone clue me in on the difference between Kanthal D and A-1? I can't locate any Kanthal awg 32, but have found 34. Would that work ok? Really need some suggestions on wires and sizes, want to order some for backup. Thanks!

Excellent thanks! I'd also like to try some Nichrome, if I were to want to make both LR and SR coils, what gauge Nichrome should I get? 34 is thinner than 32 correct? Should I just stick to 32 with both Kanthal and Nichrome? Any leads on some wick that will work would be great as well, as who knows when clouds of vapor will restock.
