Top hot spots, for me, are almost always a result of: wick hairs shorting, ground wire raising off the deck before moving up the wick, distance of wick to top coil, ( to far away, or to close and touching the center pole). Also spinning the wick in place might be a better solve than moving wick up or down, that action might mess up coils. Can't speak for missing nut, have not experienced this as yet, ( hard to believe I have not lost 1 yet, am ordering several more).

Spinning the wick definitely does help. I feel that pushing it up and down messes it up. I am very careful with the hairs though and always fold over one end of the wick before rolling it...
I did hear someone else say about a month ago that he was having more luck with wrapping on the post... Never heard any talk of it again so maybe it didnt end up working for him much either... Other rebuildables do this but they are not threaded and I believe are sterling silver... Maybe the inside of the threads is too oxidized at this point to make good connection? hmm...
