Top hot spots, for me, are almost always a result of: wick hairs shorting, ground wire raising off the deck before moving up the wick, distance of wick to top coil, ( to far away, or to close and touching the center pole). Also spinning the wick in place might be a better solve than moving wick up or down, that action might mess up coils. Can't speak for missing nut, have not experienced this as yet, ( hard to believe I have not lost 1 yet, am ordering several more).

Spinning the wick definitely does help. I feel that pushing it up and down messes it up. I am very careful with the hairs though and always fold over one end of the wick before rolling it...
I did hear someone else say about a month ago that he was having more luck with wrapping on the post... Never heard any talk of it again so maybe it didnt end up working for him much either... Other rebuildables do this but they are not threaded and I believe are sterling silver... Maybe the inside of the threads is too oxidized at this point to make good connection? hmm...

Huge milestone for me today. I found myself out on a family outing with my portable setup, a Volt X2 and Phoenix bottom coil, which combination to date has performed quite well for me when I'm out and about. At 12 pm the device failed and despite my best efforts I could not get it going again. My options were quite limited. Either stick it out or buy a pack of the stinkies. Let me tell you this was a very tough day for me but having gone 4 months without a cigarette I somehow stuck it out (I ate a lot ..lol) and managed to make it home without vaping or smoking...for a whole 8 hours, which for me was previously unimaginable.

Needless to say I practically broke the door down when I got home and stormed for my, you guessed it, DID! It was like crawling through an endless desert and finding my oasis again. I've been DIDDING non-stop for the past 2 hours and don't intend to stop any time soon.

Lesson learned. Always bring back up with you, wherever you go and whatever you do. That mini sure is going to be handy it seems. ;)

Been there so many times over the last two years and change... Always have a baggy with a crappy bottle of juice and carto in the car and oftentimes a back up tank (or soon to be back up DID) in the pocket if away for more than half a day... Been thinking of getting something ultra portable like a 306 carto for the wallet.

good job hanging on!

no gas station/drug store to buy a disposable? I find them decent in a pinch.

Nada. Not where I was. I actually thought about lighting a particularly long .... I saw stomped out by me that looked delish at the time. Then snapped out of it. I hated myself for that.

Have you not learned anything from me yet?! Here's what I brought with me on my 5 day trip to Miss and Tx.

* 10 slotted cartos
* 60 ml of juice
* 2 drip tools
* 2 spare drip-tips
* 2 tanks
* 6 x 18500 batts
* 2 chargers
* 2 Provari's (in 18500 mode)

The above items were split and divided between my back-pack and upright.

and I kept my little eGo kit as back up.. with 2 batts and a couple 1.7 cartos thrown in. Never leave home without it.

I refuse to take chances that I'll be caught without a back-up on hand. :D

Fyi, I'm on day 3 of my trip, and i've changed one carto. :facepalm:

Congrats for your strength in a tough situation! Next time though, please bring 1 or 2 backups Hon- just so I don't have to worry about you LOL! I have some original Lavatubes (for free) if you need a backup lol.

Ha...too funny but also very wise. I'm determined to never be caught out like that again. Grew complacent I guess with my portable setup that had never failed me until today. It turned out to be a blown coil on the Phoenix. Ima bringing everything I can with me from now on. Who knows, I might even revive the fanny pack back in style :laugh:

Ricky, I really appreciate you hammering this point home. It really helped me and these are those types of things that I fail to see covered in tutorials. It also helped to get my coil building started out on the right foot, so-to-speak

Typically generous response from one of the many fine ones in this thread, thank you! I already have more stuff than I know what to do with, making the experience all the more infuriating; that I simply did not think to bring a back up with me. On second thought...let me correct that (nervous sweat on brow). My wife actually suggested 5 min's before walking out the door that I should bring another one just in case, to which I stupidly responded 'na this will do just fine dear.' :facepalm:
Bless her heart, I heard far fewer 'I told you so's' than I deserved today. But tomorrow's another day :unsure:

Me too. I think mine are often like this and I have thought it may be an issue but has been hard for me to avoid.. Especially when wrapping on the wick before inserting.... My coils are always very close together toward the bottom. I think I need to start widening the gaps... I will definitely try to watch this next time. Thanks.

Your wife is a good woman not to have said "I told you so" and also to have driven you home. She did drive didn't she?! If not, how many speeding tickets did you get on the way home?! :ohmy:

Thank you for the compliment :)

You and your wife sound a lot like my husband and I. I'm the "over do'er" and he goes with the bare minimum- I suggest he bring more of something- he kindly declines- then runs out of whatever it was- and I just smile - kindly of course :) going on like this for 26 years LOL
