Spent a few hours setting up the mini DID. First thing I noticed was that the wick hole seems smaller than the regular DID? I see that its listed as 2.8mm, is this the same diameter on the DID? I read from a previous post of using a 40mm x 35mm size wick, rolled it using a 1/16 drill bit after oxidizing the crap out of it (jack frost, plus torch after rolled wick, and 3 juice burns), then wrapped a 4 coil using 32ga kanthal. Surprisingly had a steady coil at 1.6 ohms on my mini provari and had a few hot spots at first but adjusted and all the coils seemed to glowing evenly, put some menthol/tob blend 50/50 juice in and the taste wasn't too bad but not great, vapor and th decent, took the top cap off and noticed a hot spot, adjusted coils, went through a tank or two just burning juice fixing minor hot spots...finally ripped off coil tried the pk method using a 14ga needle for coil, but had to cut a lot off the wick to get it to fit in the coil (width was about 15-20mm), dropped the wick in and all the coils just glowed red, just wasn't wicking enough, ripped that out, made another wick and tried the hybrid cotton method jsut for ....s and giggles, and still got some hot spots, lol Was thinking I might should have gone with the regular size DID or short DID as I believe it would allow more room to wrap coils and make a thicker wick, is this true? Any suggestions on tips/tricks for setting up a mini DID very appreciated

I actually went and made a silica wick (3mm) for a standard and mini DID and it was super easy to wrap and no hotspots/shorts. Wicked great, but just doesn't have the same crisp flavor as SS mesh. Used them for a day and couldn't take it so stuck my SS wicks back in (had saved them when I did the silica).

Standard/Shortie DID has a 3.5mm wick hole. Mini/Gemini have the 2.8mm. I've been wrapping my coils on the wick before installing it on both my Std/Shortie and Minis and it's much easier for me to get a really nicely wrapped coil. Works best with the tool you're rolling on (paper clip, drill bit or solid wick) because it stays more rigid.
Oh and on the PK method. For the Mini I've used a 8D finishing nail for the coil and a 1/16th drill bit for the wick and on a Std/Shortie a Home Depot pick tool for coil and the 8D nail for rolling wick. It's actually nice to build a coil first that free stands so you can get a baseline resistance check without a wick. Helps for trouble shooting if things go sideways.

Yeah, I had seen that somewhere (maybe in here) so I've been just removing and torching the second one when I clean the coil. If the coil is too nasty or brittle and breaks, I just re-wrap and go. So far so good! Sometimes the sheer amount of info here is staggering to me, and how much I've learned in roughly six weeks vaping.
I hear ya. We used to have a really dedicated member (Mr. Mann) who was taking the time to organize all these threads into the "DIDdex" (index linked on 1st page of thread), but he's been spending his time working on the juice vendor standards & requirements so I think it's gone woefully out of date. Shame because it was really helpful.

hey man, so...yeah... I just had a look at the 500 mesh thread and just discovered that in fact my wicks are useless.
not tight enough, not thick enough to promote capillary action. In fact according to BJ43 all i'm using would be gravitational juice flow... that's probably the main reason i cant close that hole! no wicking... thanks bud, appreciate...

how do you get a hot vape from a did? like i just went back to a carto to try it, and i noticed immediately how warm the vapor was. flavor was eh, but the vapor production and warmth beat my did out by a long shot. i am confident my coil is not shorting, so is it just the nature of the beast? tips?
Boy I tell ya there is definitely information a plenty in this thread. I think I have learned more in 24 hours than I have in the past three months about Genesis Style Atty's Seems like I should be able to put a pretty good coil together now once it arives and get started with the vaping

Shackattack, the only tools I use are a straightened out medium sized paper clip, a toothpick, reading glasses and a Lighted Jewelers Magnification Visor with two mags set up on it. The first time I ever wrapped one, I had to call in my grandson to help. But ever since, it's been a breeze to do it alone. It's just a matter of not worrying about anything while doing another thing. Don't worry about loosening a nut while tightening a screw... don't worry about moving the wick while tightening the wire...

Wrapping a hot coil (LR 0.8ohm to ~1.4ohm) will warm the juice pretty fast. I've started making SR coils (~2.0ohm to ~2.5ohm) since everything I have is either VV or Kicked and am pushing a couple extra watts compared to traditional devices (up from ~8.0 watts to 10 watts). I've gotten into the habit of warming the coil with a few seconds of power before taking the first primer hit and then long slow draws. Once you get it down, these DIDs make the nicest, warm & tasty vapes around.

You lower that gauge and you lower the resistance. That's what they're getting at. I generally use 28 and 30. Some flavors need 32 because I don't like the lower with that flavor. So if you wrap a 1.8ohm, and you drop a gauge, you should drop to a 1.2 or so. Drop more, and you fall below 1. Factors such as wick diameter, etc factor in.
so what will like a 4/5 of 28 get me? more flavor and vapor?
