i wrapped the coil around a screw first this time. the wick is able to slide out of it. i think my problem is getting it not to touch the left side of the hole. i'll move it but then i have to adjust the nuts. If i have already trimmed the wire and it get's messed up, i end up having to start all over with the wrap.grrr I'll figure it out eventually. I just had the dang thing, but when i went to add juice it got cattywompus again
tibyn, it does appear to me also that insufficient clearance may exist between the nuts and coil. Might the coil also be wrapped a little too tight? You should be able to pull out the wick and replace it with minimal friction without disturbing the coils, ie, barely touching the coil.

I know many have successfully done so but I don't use a particularly fat wick. Perhaps if you continue encountering difficulties you may wish to construct a thinner wick that doesn't touch the entire inside of the wick hole diameter as this increases the possibility of shorts (particularly if not 100% oxidized) and decreases the distance between the positive post and your coil wraps. Once you get it going right you can always experiment with a thicker wick next time.

I also find that a new coil contracts and expands a little more than one that has been broken in a while so while it's heating/cooling it may actually pull the wick closer to the post, touch, and cause shorts. Hope some of this helps.

i'm getting fire to the coil now. but I have a hard time with that top screw holding the top wire tightly. progress not perfection...

Try using the sides of the nuts that have a knurling on the surfaces, as your actual mating surfaces. They lock up better that way. I.e., the totally smooth surfaces should face away from the wire your clamping. Holding the bottom nut with a finger and turning the upper one with a toothpick poking at the knurled side works well for me.

maybe that's it. i will have to change the nut below the top one to have the knurling facing upward

whatyoutalkinboutwillis? :?:

Ha. I'm old enough to remember that show sadly. I believe it was mentioned earlier that some people were shipped negative screws that did not screw down all the way; the actual threads on the screw should go all the way up to the screw head. Some did not, preventing the proper clamping of the negative wire.

I had the same issue. At first I used the flat sides of the nuts to hold the wire till the wire just fell out. When I took the nuts off I noticed that the nuts had a raised edge not letting them hold the wire at all. When I turned the nuts around so the recessed sides hold the wire it was problem solved.

Dont worry to much about the wick touching the sides of the hole, I use the fat wick and it touches the hole all around and have plenty of vapor and taste as shown in Cholo's vid.

You just need to make sure that you have fully oxidized the and burned the wick, (this is most important step in setting up the DID)

that's been done. I used the same wick already, before i messed it all up the other day.

Looking at his set up I'm wondering what is on the top of his wick? ( nevermind, I just watched it again and it just looks like the mesh is a little loose at the top) Also, while it blows massive clouds, I don't think I'd want to have a set up that leaks every time it's held horizontally. Please tell me that the DID doesn't leak like that in general!

his is leaking do to he is not using the screw in the fill hole and if you look at his wick it is real skinny. He is purposely turning it up side down to get the wick very wet and maybe even to equalize air pressure.

hey ty, if it is of any help, u can hold the middle screw down while tightening the top screw up. Worse comes to worst, im hoping you have an extra nut. Alot of people benefit having 4 nuts leaving none of the center post exposed.

LOL, rereading having extra nuts is funny

Example - removing the the ground screw when when actually attempting to refill an exceptionally functioning DID does not have the result one would expect.

Grasshopper: Master Cloud, why do two such seemingly identical parts have different names? The "ground screw" and the "refilling hole screw" look the same to me.
Master Cloud: Ah Grasshopper, in a name may reside one's purpose in the universe. To confuse one's purpose not only negates the one, but may have unforeseen consequences as all parts DID function as one...

Tiff.. did you anneal your wire with a bic lighter, straightening and smoothing the kinks out, before coiling?
