I am the same, taste and temperature are my guide. I will work with a coil until it is perfect. The time spent is much less. Now I switch out just for fun.
For those who are struggling with the wick and coil silica rope works great also and is very short friendly. I have one DID running with silica and it tastes good.
Maybe its smoother because your not breathing in all those silca shards I've been reading about. Just kidding, I hope. Flavor is another tricky aspect. I had great flavor early on, lost it, got it back. First, use a good juice, I think this is very important. I was using, shall I say, very reasonably priced product and was satisfied filling my cartos or tanks, even dripping with them. I have noticed, with the did, taste or lack of, very pronounced and detectable. Some of my favorites had a muted off taste, while others were almost perfume like. So, I went on a juice mission. I have found my sweet spot with Virgin Vapors, this is very personal journey, so I just recommend experimentation. Now I know others really enjoy low res vaping around the 1.5-1.7 mark. During my experimentation, I discovered more joy at 3.0 ohm, with a vv cranked to 5.0-5.5 depending on my mood. I thought flavor popped for me at this configuration. Again very personal and requires subjective trial and error. One other note, make sure you are not shorting. Shorting in some instances made my vape either harsh, or muted the taste dramatically. I can now discern a short by taste alone, having experienced the quality of a given juice through the did.

My first attempt was with the allen wrench, but I couldn't manipulate the roll small enough. The next attempt worked fantastic though, using a straightened out large paper clip.
Once I get my rolls down, the wrench will be just as easy, I'm sure.

I do my first loose wrap around the Allen wrench and then take it off and tighten the roll in my fingers. Never could get past the square feeling of the wrench as I rolled the wick. Very hard for me to get the wrap tight enough.

I'd keep the shiny one and buy a matte finish one for the WA, someday you will want the perfectly shined DID for perhaps another shiny mod.

I have 6 shiny ones so I can spare one to experiment on. I do have a satin mini coming. I think I will practice on a top cap. I ordered a couple of 1mm holes and they are just too tight, I am using one though because I have one juice that really tastes better with a tight draw.I have ordered a new cap with the standard hole.

Damn. A 5/6 wrap with 32g gives me a 2.0? No matter how many times I try it that's what I get. 3 coils, same way, same result. Still struggling with these other two.

Oh. I vape Boba's on my third did that hits like a freight train. The one working one. 5 days, two twist outs to burn and clean then twist backs. How many times are any of you vaping 100% VG seeing it gunk up and taste cappy? I mean loss of flavor or even a tiny tiny of dry burn.

I have one tank with VG banana nut bread, the coil looked like crap but the flavor was still good. I think I went 5 or 6 weeks with that coil. Then I had a great idea to torch the mesh and coil while still in the DID. Shortly after that my positive post crumbled. I have one wick and coil that I took out gently and torched the put it right back on - the coil performed perfectly. I am not nervous about getting the coil right any more so if I want to I just put a new coil on. When I change the coil I go ahead and burn the mesh with a lighter. Torching too much left my wicks brittle.

I'm sorry my mesh/wick tutorial isn't up yet, but I'm having trouble filming it by myself with a stationary web camera, as you see more of my fingers than you do the wick and coil, so my girlfriend and I are going to sit down this week to reshoot it! It's going to be a general instructional/setup video with an emphasis on getting the most vapor production out of your DID, which is usually how I orient most of my genesis atomizers. Hoping to have it finalized by this Friday at the very latest.

I'm looking forward to this as well. I modeled my best wick after one of yours - less mesh(I used 1/3 of a included sheet), fat wick. I added the fourth nut too.
Used jack Frost on it with no quenching or annealing, just a couple juice burns. 3.0 ohm 6 wrap has performed beautifully for the last couple of days. Great flavor on these! And I love the draw - the ZAU is a little airy for me.

I dry burn my coil once a week. Change the coil every couple weeks. Depends alot on how much I use that particuar genisis. If I use one particular one constantly while at home, then I change out coil after 5-7 days. I should note, thats only because I have no issues with hot spots or wrapping.

Still have same wicks on all devices that I originally started with. Only thing I do there is rinse them off when changing out the coil, give it a quick burn with lighter and re-install.

For those of you who bought a used Provari or used it for awhile, you need to clean it. Regular maintenance will keep its top performance for a long long time. You will be sorry if you sell it without cleaning it first.

I once flooded my Provari with e-juice (not with the DID), the e-juice dripped to the inside from the button and I had been told to soak it inside and out with Isopropyl Alcohol, before I send it in. It brought it back to life again; as new.

Note 1: The % concentration of Isopropyl Alcohol determines the drying time; the higher the concentration the quicker it dries. I was using 75%, but I bought some 91% afterwards.

Note 2: Be sure to wait until the Alcohol completely evaporates, before you put the battery back in.

You mean silica wrapped inside the mesh?

Yeah. To be honest this is the one that has worked from last Thursday. I've taken the wick out twice and taken the torch to it. Then dry burn the coil for a sec to get clear. Last night was second day I've had to do this. This morning still borderline metallic taste. I was thinking of torching coil again and recoiling fresh is due.

But since this is only did working consistently, AND it has my all day vape, I admit it see use 75% of the day and travels to work.

With only 1 DID shared between my provari and a mech mod, i wont be going on high resistance until i can figure out whats wrong with my Kick.

Surprisingly my flavor is coming in right today. Having good TH, good Flavor and good vapor today!
Makes me think about not wanting to wash the tank!!

I feel for you! Hang in there.
There are a few reasons why you might not be experiencing fantastic flavor, which the posters are pointing out.

Did you use the Jack Frost method?
Did you cut the tank's end of the wick at a 45% angle?
Did you torch/quench the rolled wick 3x?
Did you ejuice and fire it 3x?
Did you raise it off the bottom of the tank after inserting it?

We've so got to get you going with this! A fantastic vape is just one tweak away. Hang in there!

Uma, yes to jack frost method.
No to 45Deg angle
Torch quenched x3, ejuice x3 too yes it's very very minimally raised from the bottom.

Another question is how many times can you reuse the wick? it softens when soaked with juice. How do we wash or clean it?

I use all VG, usually unflavored or with a few drops of menthol crystal solution/10ml. I tend to thin the VG anywhere from 0-15% depending on the VG I use (seems they are not all created equal, regardless of water reported water content, much to my surprise)

I tend to twist out, dry burn and torch the wick every 1-2 tank fulls. I don't really get that much gunk, but since my all day vape is clear and unflavored, my buds are really sensitive to any funny crap on the coil as there is nothing to 'hide it' from my .... taste buds. Also my juice starts out clear, and I like it to finish clear. I also think piles of carbon deposits on the wick are both unnecessary and probably undesirable.

When I do use Bobas, I do get a lot of gunk :)

Perhaps relevant, I vape from 10-12 watts

EDIT: And I use a 3/2 wrap on a fat wick for 1.5 ohm

I'm assuming a 32g wire here...

You can do that and wrap it around the section of mesh that will be wrapped with the coil. But you can also use silica wick alone with a coil wrapped in it.

Yet another experiment for me to try. Hmmm

Good morning all!
Here's a few quick tips I'd like to share while I'm online.

1. be sure the coils are evenly spaced and close together but not touching.
2. make sure the wire is close to the base before heading up the wick.
3. make sure the wire is close to the wick before heading over to the center post. (picture Captain Hook)

Junkrock(sp) has the best visual on how to rig the top coil in his new tutorial. It's towards the very end somewhere.
I hope someone can link to the video, I don't have time to find it, gotta take the kid to the Dentist.

After my DID day from hell, I made a new coil and today has been a DID day from heaven. I'm sure at some point my coil skills will improve to the point where most, if not all my DID days will be heavenly! Quite the learning curve of this device! Most of the issues I've had, I'm convinced are center post related. There's just not a lot of room for error. Hopefully the new center post nut setup will make things easier.
