Provaris aren't harder to get it right, they're just quicker to tell you when it's wrong. I setup all my DID on my Provari (mech-mod advocates will cringe at this...) because I know if it works there it works anywhere.
Wick: I follow the "RWeschler" method, but I still do the 3x quench + 3x juice burn as well (old dog, new tricks...)
- Cut sheet (~2.0cm for std/shortie, ~1.5cm for mini) x 4.0cm tall (I use either 325 or 400, but some folks like 270. I do however like T316-Medical grade better than T304-Food grade...)
- Burn whole wick flat (Jack Frost method)
- Fold leading edge over (will provide evenness on outside seam)
- Roll wick around a tool that fits closely in size to the wick hole (8D finishing nail for std/shortie, 1/16in drill bit for Mini)
- (optional) cut bottom at 45 degrees (I do it because it helps bubbles come out the bottom of the wick)
- Test for fit in wick hole (should fit with enough friction to hold it in place - ~1mm off bottom of tank)
- Trim top of wick (I usually cut to just below the top of the center pin - a little shorter for Mini)
- Pull wick out, torch wick and quench in water (I use a Home Depot butane torch)
- Juice burn (douse with juice and light on fire with lighter till it goes out)
Coil: I use a modified "Petar K" method (Kanthal 30awg A-1, 4/5 wraps: ~1.7ohm on std/shortie - ~1.4ohm on Mini)
- Cut ~5in wire
- Anneal with lighter (lower temp flame just bring to red up/back and let cool in air)
- Wrap coil on tool (I use a home Depot pick for Std/Shorite, 8D finishing nail for Mini)
- Install coil in DID (stick tool right in wick hole with coil still wrapped)
- Tighten leads (I go in between negative and post on bottom and clockwise on top - someone once said "like mickey mouse ears")
- Pull out tool and make sure coil not touching anywhere
- Use toothpick in top of coil to pull slightly away from top/center post
- Set Provari to 3.0v and dry burn (nudge with tooth pick if not even red glow top to bottom)
- Check resistance (this is the clean/baseline resistance for the coil installed - if it changes much later you it's either touching center post or shorting which means wick)
Try to twist wick into coil. If it doesn't go in with just a little resistance (should just touch all the way around), roll wick tighter between thumb and forefinger, try again (rinse/repeat).
Wet burn. Douse the coil/wick with juice 4/5 drops and fry it (repeat 3x)
Check resistance (if it's more than ~0.2ohm difference burn to glow and look for obvious hot spots or simply twist the wick 1/4 turn - rinse/repeat)
Fill and vape. Seems like a lot of steps, but once you get the hang of it you can do all of this in literally a few minutes. Also, number of wraps, mesh # and wire gauge can be changed for your vaping style.
I'm sure I'm forgetting something, if so will edit later.
