400 x 400 SS 316L mesh I think is the best IMHO.
has any one tried the did with silica wick?
I am having trouble with hot spots and i think the taste is a bit metallic even when i have it setup right.
using 30 gauge nichrome or 28 gauge kanthal.
don't really like the whole idea of quenching and torching, takes too much time.
Any thoughts about the silica wick?

Please don't give up on the all stainless method as its so much better than silica and takes less than 30 mins to make a new wick/coil when you get it nailed.
Plus once your wick is made properly it will last you for MONTHS! ;-)
Funny story, here in israel vaping is just in it's diapers... ppl are vaping egos only. Some guy asked me in a bar why am i holding a dildo and why is it smoking? ....

+10~!!!!! Very nice summary!!!Please don't give up on the all stainless method as its so much better than silica and takes less than 30 mins to make a new wick/coil when you get it nailed. Here is a step by step guide of how I make my setup and it works every time. Please give it a try:-
DID SETUP
Wick:-
Cut mesh size to 40mm x 20mm
Torch it flat on both sides and air cool
Fold one long edge over on itself by 2mm
Roll unfolded edge of mesh around a 3.2mm drill bit with folded edge facing up and last to roll facing inwards
Remove from drill bit and cut tank end at 45 degrees
Test fit in tank hole and roll between fingers if it is to tight to get a snug fit
Pull out wick 1mm and cut off top in line with centre post
Torch/Water Quench 3 times
Juice Burn 3 times
Coil:-
Cut 50mm of wire and using a lighter heat up till red along the whole length and air cool
Hold one end of wire on top of 3.2mm drill bit and wrap 4 turns evenly around finishing with both ends of wire facing in the same direction
Put drill bit with coil still in place into tank hole
Guide lower coil wire end between centre post and screw and wrap anticlockwise 3/4 of a turn around screw and tighten
Fix upper coil wire to top of centre post anticlockwise 3/4 of a turn and tighten
Bend both wire ends vertical and cut flush with top of nut/screw
Remove drill bit and using toothpick adjust coil so it is upright and even distance from post and screw and also no wraps are touching each other
Connect battery and with short bursts at first dry burn coil till all rings glow an even orange
You can check the resistance with a meter set at 200ohms and as a guide anything between 1.8ohms to 2.5ohms wil be shown depending on the size of wire used but remember to touch both meter leads together first and subtract this reading from your coil reading
Slide the wick gently through the top of the coils and into the tank hole using a twisting left and right motion
The wick may need rolling between fingers again to make it slightly smaller to fit through the coil it should not be loose but a snug just touching fit
Drip 5 drop of juice across length of wick and burn off till coil glows do this 3 times whilst looking for hot spots and if any found twist wick 1/4 of a turn and test again
Remove tank filling screw, fill with 3ml of juice and refit filling screw, top cap with drip tip and.....ENJOY!
Very much so!!Plus once your wick is made properly it will last you for MONTHS! ;-)
Ok. I'm not the only one that has a listing of "those juices" that just need the carto/tank. phewA 4/3 wrap with 32awg on a fat wick gave me 2.2 ohm pretty consistently. I have saved my tanks for 'that juice that was sooo delicious.....but now tastes like crap in the DID'. One juice that was my absolute favorite I guess needed a little something donated by or masked by the wadding in the cartos. I have a huge stock of the stuff in my fridge.
As someone already said don't give up on SS Mesh, I have used everything under the sun, and I tell you, there is no better wick than SS Mesh PROPERLY PREPARED!! I emphasize the PROPERLY PREPARED. It just lasts forever, and will season like Grandmas old cast iron skillet. Take your time with the oxidation over all else, even coil prep. Jack Frost, roll, juice burn, fiddle fuddle with the coil until it stops hot spotting, then vape and watch it season. After a few tanks you'll be totally happy. When it Gets a bit crusty from the rich juices, let the tank run dry, then dry burn and use a toothpick to remove visible scale. Dry burn it good, adjust coils if needed, re-load juice and go back at it. I swear I could use a grinder on my 6 week old wick and still it would not short because it is that well seasoned. I have never mentioned health, but I experimented a bit with the silica I use to use and I'd be darned, but I could get particulate matter to show up on cloth I exhaled into. I read about this somewhere, and wouldn't you know, I could make it happen. Tried it out with my DID, SS mesh set up, and no matter how hard I tried, nothing, clean, I started getting dizzy from the all the nic I inhaled messing with this, but I proved something to myself. I don't know if this is another reason to tout the SS mesh, but for me it is, after all, this 59 year old body has inhaled down enough to give me pause to try and limit further damage. Its why I dropped the analogs in the first place. Just some thoughts, no matter what you decide, happy vaping.
+10~!!!!!! for both!!Just one more point on silicone wick, to beat this dead horse...
When you have to replace your coil, using silicone wick, I GUARANTEE it will take you longer than wrapping a replacement coil on the SS wick... No mess, no fuss..
It may take a little to figure out the process that works best for you to get it set-up the first time, but I can replace a coil in under two minutes and replace the wick & coil in under 10 (including walking downstairs to grab it, cut it, torch it, etc...).
If its not a process you want to go through even then, just make a few, put some VG on them (you can get Humco at wally world which is good enough for this purpose), and put them in a small ziploc where they won't get mangled. 6 coils will last you a year... Guarantee you'll save time (even with the learning curve) vs using silicone or any other fiber wick over time..![]()
I'm on this side of the pond. An order from them was at my door exactly 8 days later. Ordered on a Monday, received the following Monday.Wrong side of the pond for mebut I appreciate it anyway.
This is the very reason I finally caved and had to move my Boba's out of my DID and into my Penelope.i have done it and it does work good
but i noticed that some juices taste better with silica and others with SS mesh
Thanks ppl, finaly got a good wick going, hope it lasts me a while...
I have found the best thing is to finish with the cigarette paper under the coil, it gives me the best Results.
I have been using the did for a while now, yesterday has been terrible, made 3 coils all bad with hot spots... just got really mad.
Funny story, here in israel vaping is just in it's diapers... ppl are vaping egos only. Some guy asked me in a bar why am i holding a dildo and why is it smoking? ....

I'm still on my original wick since receiving my first DID the first of June & maybe only 2 coils. 2nd DID received mid June has the original wick in it. Third DID had some wick experimenting with, but could not come up with anything better than what I started with.

Very much so!!
and no dry hits, ever!
On my Mini, I can tell when it needs a refill because the vapor thins out. It even makes me sad. (until I refill it). I must get backups, to last me through an entire day, leaving the refilling duties for while I'm watching movies at night with the family. At least I won't have laptop in lap while we're enjoying our family time eh.![]()
Uma - it's an ok place isn't it?+10~!!!!!! for both!!
Have I ever mentioned how much I love this thread?
I LOVE THIS THREAD!!!
If you want to go with McMaster-Carr, this link should bring you right to the 400x400.
400x400 Mesh
We all have our own opinions, but I'd try the 400 before you bother ordering the 325, I tried it once, but much prefer the 400 in all of my genesis devices for everything including 100% VG. On a brand new wick, 100% VG takes a bit to wick, but as soon as the wick breaks in, it keeps up just fine. YYMV, but![]()
any of you made a bigger air hole on it ?
