OK today I tore down 4 of my DIDs and the mini and the orion. I torched and rolled the 500 mesh thick tight coil with minimal center hole. For Uma I did the 30 awg coil. With a 3/4 wrap clocked in at 1.3 to 1.5 ohms. For my other coils I used the twisted 33awg. That one came in at 1.1 ohms.
The 500 mesh is super soft and soooo smooth. I did my usual quickie flash through the torch. To stiffen the coil just a bit I did 1 quench after the juice burn. I have to say the 500 mesh wicks extremely well. The flavor is really good. My white peach ....which I would drink if I could tasted better than ever....I didn't think that was even possible. The 500 mesh is very short free. Just a tiny bit of coil tinkering and life was good.I did also try the twisted 32 awg but this wire is just too thick and inflexible to provide a stable coil.
As I had the tanks torn down I decided to use the stainless steel parts. I LOVE the spacer, that seems to make coils much easier to make. I kept the old screw for the negative wire....if feels tighter than the new type. But I love the new screws for the fill holes.
I did finally get the mini DID running well....for some reason the mini gave me all kinds of issues and I went to a silica wick. Now it is running with the 500 mesh happily.
In celebration I whipped up some new juices.... lemon meringue pie, Irish coffee, pinacolada, chocolate toffee, chocolate strawberry, vanilla cream, and cinnamon roll.
SWEEEEEET!!!! I love you guys (and gals!!). This is such great news, all around! We can now dial in our meshes to match our flavors.
Did it flood overnight??? That would be my big concern, because, like I mentioned in another post, mine wicks fantastically and doesn't leak or flood ever (nor are there ever any dry hits). I worry a bit about flooding and leaking overnight with the 500/30. But if it does, I can always set it in an egg carton with a condom on the threads.
I'm so excited to try this for the not so strong flavors like Vanilla, etc. I think I'll leave the Pink Spot flavors at 400/32... oh and the AltCigs Irish Cream at 400/32 (it already makes me giddy with delight lol), but there certainly are flavors out there that can use a punch up. I love this. You all ROCK!!!!!
I cut off about 6 feet (or so). I fold it in 2. The end with the loop I hook over my dining room chair (has wood that sticks up). Then the 2 cut ends I put in a drill and use a screwdriver bit that I tighten nice and tight. This holds the wire nice and tight. Then I step back putting a bit of tension on the wire I want to twist. Crank the drill. I twist until the twists are about 1mm apart. Make sure the twists are tight the whole way. I unhook it from my dining room chair first. Support the twist a bit because it will twist a bit when first unhooked. Then free it from the drill and voila you have a gorgeous twisted 33awg wire. I cut mine after coiling into the size of pieces that I use to make a coil.
Very detailed and easy to imagine/follow description of the twisting method. Thanks! This is yet another experiment I have on my wish list.
(somehow I keep getting behinder and behinder on my to-do list.... I wonder what they put in that Irish Cream??)
If this helps anyone, a diagram of the coil path I use on my DID to reduce the gap between the contacts and the wick (not to scale).
Excellent graphic!!! I agree with Rick, this needs to be in the Index!!! I hope someone with know-how will step up to the plate and add it. (please don't look at me, I would totally mess up the entire index. I *know* me).
Here is my long awaited video review that I should have done a long time ago!! Better late then never!!
Very nice! A big thanks for this, you even included the o-rings placements and hot coils tinkering. Well done!!!
I can't help myself here, sorry!, but ... psssst, try Scorching the mesh before the fold and roll and I bet it leaves the hot spot in the dust. (Jack Frost method).
But, I'm glad you did it this way, because it lets the viewer play with those hot spots right along with you.
