I think I promised to post a few pics next time I had to do a dry burn of the coil on one of my DID’s.

All juice will eventually junk up a coil, reducing flavour and vapour production.

NEWSFLASH ! You don’t need to build a new wick or a coil, simply follow the pictorial guide below:-

This is a pretty gunked up coil (allowed to get this bad for demonstration purposes)…

CleanCoil1_zps5366f0db.jpg

Step 1
Gently remove the wick with a slight twisting motion, trying very hard not to disturb the coil…
CleanCoil2_zps91e0f0ea.jpg

Step 2
This will leave you with the gunked up coil in place, like so…
CleanCoil3_zpseef90ab7.jpg

Step 3
Next, gently and in short bursts, fire up the device, until you obtain an even orange glow over the length of the coil, burning off gunked up deposits…
CleanCoil4_zps80141f60.jpg

Step 4
This will leave you with a relatively clean and functional coil, almost as good as the day you wrapped it… I fired it a few more times after this pic, just to clean it a tad more...
CleanCoil5_zps12ac786c.jpg

Step 5
Now slide the wick, very gently, back into the coil, with a twisting motion, again without disturbing the coil. If, you do squash a wrap, you can open it back up again with a toothpick etc.
Note the arrow on the pic below, this is where the wire terminates on the centre post, there is still a little junk on the last little bit of wire, don’t try and get it all… I find that this helps insulate that last little bit of wire, this is a notorious hot spot and it eliminates it… Bonus!

Hope that helps some of you….

Nice picture tutorial. I do the same, but wouldn’t it be better to torch the wick to get ride of the gunk ON the wick BEFORE putting the wick back into the coil?

Yes it is, but this is a great option if you're on the go or don't necessarily have a torch on hand.

My exact setup with the did, it should be perfect. I would suggest you must have a short somewhere. With my 1.9 ohm, at 3.7 v, I get great flavor and th. You are vaping at about 7.6 watts, more than enough to generate good vapor and th.

You was 100% right :) I make new coil using cigarette paper and now is almost awesome :D Almost, because coil must vape some juice to work at 100%, but I know it will be great! So I made mistake with oxydizing... Hmm, I must think about it, before I made a lot of wicks for me and friends and there was no problems at all. But those was thin wicks, not fat like in DID. For now I'm very happy, so I don't try oxydize and wrap new coil, maybe in future ;)

Cheers

When wrapping/re-wrapping a coil try this instead of the cigarette paper. With the wick out of the DID and the coil wrapped in its proper position place a few drops right where the coil is wrapped, burn off with a lighter and repeat several times. Replace the wick being careful not to move the coil on the wick again. I found this method promotes that carbon layer between the wick and coils similar to what the cigarette paper trick does, thereby reducing shorts.

I no longer use the cigarette paper method as I found it gunks up the coil prematurely.

yup, even tho I have 3 provari that test ohm, I enjoy that same ohm tester (bought from elsewhere).
I also got a voltage indicator for mech mods. Tho the drop off is usually significant enough to not need it, it is still neat.

haven't bother with the fuse. may get a few just for that peace of mind but damn, they are like $9 and I am cheap :)

You could always try the Holocron labs fuse, think it's called the Shortstop, it can be reused over and over again. Not like the 2 cent for safety fuses that are one time use. Though hopefully you never need to use either of them ;) Nice to have for peace of mind with the mech. PV's though!

I am so glad I could help. We have all been there. I have just finally figured out that any problem of vapor, TH, harshness, or taste, when vaping above 6 watts, is usually related to a short somewhere, or the pv not connecting to the DID properly. I am happy you are finding your sweet spot. It may take a bit of tinkering, but this Atty is a rocket ship!! I am currently getting the hang of the mini, and I tell you, it is also a very strong contender for the best things come in small packages award. I really like the mini more than I thought I would. It is so very easy to travel with. Good vaping.

Fuzz, I am with you on this. The cig paper was a good learning experience, however now I find it just clogs up my coil quicker. Like you, a couple of juice burns seems to accomplish the same thing.

Quick questions on mech mods. I am currently awaiting mine, and I have seen several conversations on the protective fuses. We really don't need them if we generally vape on a 1.8 ohm coil, correct? I would think the fuses are for those on the low end of Ohms .08-1.4, who worry about melting down there bats, is this assumption correct?

I'm with you two on the clogging. I've done a few cotton tipped setups and find that after a few days I need to pull the coil and strip the wick clean. It works good in a pinch. I keep a small piece of rolled cotton in my carry kit for just such an emergency. Other than that it ends up being too much of a PITA to use regularly.

I am the proud owner of DID# 0115. It took me about 2 hours of trial and error to get this badboy vaping right but it is a steam train now! The only issue that I am having is that there is a slight metallic taste to this right now. I washed all the parts in hot water however something is just off. I will keep tinkering with it and see if I can get the flavor shining through. I know this juice very well and for some reason it just taste metallic. I'll post up a picture of my coil in a bit.

my setup is #400 mesh from jim's kit
kanthal 32 a-1
Provari v2 at 3.1v with a 1.4 ohm coil.

the vapor production is very insane like nothing I have ever vaped!

It's probably the coil that is giving you that metallic taste...

Give it a tank or two and it goes away :)

That's probably just the coil wire your tasting, and should go away when it's broken in I believe, if memory serves. Or possibly a hot spot, or dry wick. Did you do a juice burn on the wick first before installing?

No hotspots and I am getting really good wicking so I know those aren't it hopefully it is just the break in process. I am getting better flavor half way through this first tank so I think it is just the coil and wick I am tasting.

I hope I can get it to go away faster than that. The flavor is really starting to come through so I hope it won't take too long for me to experiance the awesomeness that is ss mesh.

Happy too with the DID ver here
Couldn't oxidize the wick...out of gaz.
So I took some 2mm silica, pulled it from the inside up, wrapped some coils around it and attached the ends to the +&-

2.0 Ohm, so one coil less will do later.
No complaints, no stress...just vapes brilliant!

I know, for Genisis-purists this must sound like horror
But for others, looking for something better though turning away because of the wick-trouble,
this could very well be the best step to getting comfortable with rebuilding.
I only did one recoil on a ViNo before, I can tell you, that's a lot more hassle than with the DID.
After only an hour of fiddling and finding tricks, I can now do a new wick and coil in 3 minutes.
Only backup I need now is a piece of silica and some wire...travel light ;)

Of course, I heard you...the taste with a ss-wick is even better...
Well lucky me :)
Another upgrade in quality awaits me in the near future and I don't even need another device for it. :2cool:
