I totally agree Yankee. I tried 500 solid (~110mm), thin channel (~70mm) and then a normal fat wick/normal center channel (~45mm). I also tried different wire and ohms (30awg, 32awg, 34awg-twisted). I was able to get them all working, but results for either of the 500 ultra-wide wicks was horrible for me. I also did the same experiments in the Mini (with shorter mesh to get same geometry) and had same results.

I've gone back and rewicked/coiled everything (just added a photo of "The Family") to my normal fat wick/normal center channel (~45mm std/shortie & ~35mm mini) running between 1.8ohm-2.2ohm and now the world is right again. I use all VV devices @ ~9.5 watts (accept the GGTS which is kicked but still set at 9.5 watts)

I've pretty much settled in to Boba's, Gorilla juice and IKV RY4 Gold (all VG) and this is where I'm getting best results (of course YMMV)

As a side note, I don't see a noticeable difference between the 500 and the 400 Jim includes...
My results between the two mesh (400-500) is not solely vapor, etc. with that top cap off, i see its wet as heck all the time. Would I convert to 500 full time if it cost 3x the amount. Hell no. But I do know that I can jack the power a bit knowing it will not dry no matter what I do. 500 wicks wicked.
My complaint has been this "closed hole". With BB, I can't. It tears my throat. I don't see pleasure in that. Again, just sayin.

Just to add to everyone else. I'm NOT saying it's good or bad. My results was with Boba's. it's a juice I struggle with to keep coils clean no matter the atty. it's extremely thick an probably fails with no hole.

This 500 mesh trend... so avant-guarde and so Counterintuitive!
I'm really curious to see where it goes...
I use 325 for a 50/50 as I thought the thicker the juice, etc, etc...but again empirical data is what science is all about...
Thank you Yankee for sharing...

edit: Yankee do you usually vape with the fill hole closed?

Anytime. I share MY experiences. And that certainly doesn't mean it reflects to all. I firmly believe it's all a matter of personal vaping experience. Period. :D

I vape Boba's as my "all-day-vape" (love the stuff). For me the flavor and vapor is most important. I'm not into TH although I like to feel enough to know I'm inhaling something. I prefer the bigger center channel because I've gotten into the habit of loading the coil before vaping by tilting till I see a couple bubbles come out of the wick bottom.

I get gunky coils eventually from all juices, but maybe I don't vape as much as some (~5ml/day) so my coils are lasting longer. When it does get too gooey (I think a little goo adds flavor) I do a dry burn/faucet rinse during a refill and good to go.

Yank, I hear you... but although everything is subjective and we all have our own filter, you'd be surprised at how many of us share the same interpretation. Unfortunately, we are not as unique as you may think. McDonalds understands this concept.
Bottom line, there's a very good chance that what is crap for you will be crap for me...
This is why I thanked you for sharing :)

I'll usually share my opinion. I just want to not discount the opinions I those that rave about a no hole 500. That's what I meant. There are those that love this setup an I value THEIR opinion on so many things. Some if their ideas don't work for me. Many do.
And that's the point here. Everyone can take all opinions, pull out the bits and pieces they like for their own style, an chalk the rest up for knowledge and experience.

I didn't follow this whole 500 thing... I get what you meant now.
I guess the challenge lies in recreating the conditions of a positive experience. Communication is so important...

Regarding 500 mesh, my take on a set-up using it, revolves around two factors. First, 500 wicks like crazy, and with the closed hole style keeps my remaining juice in tank pristine. I think this is because you don't get juice flowing downward through the hole, but rather keep it in the wick. Second, I find, number of coil wrap becomes more important with 500 mesh in developing flavor. Because the wick works so well I think it becomes more important to heat more of the wick with more coil. I have gone to a 5 or 6 wrap, using kanthal 28, to maximize flavor. When I first went to 500 mesh and my normal 3 wrap with kanthal 30 or 32, I thought I lost flavor. I went and re-visited bj43 thread on 500 mesh, and noticed him using 6 to 10 wraps of kanthal 28, and his take on flavor, and discovered much better flavor as I increased my wraps. He goes into the science of it, I just take what I can from his experiments. I also have noticed with the increased wrap an incredible drain on my tank juice, that is almost visible as i vape. I think the increased juice consumption is adding to flavor. I have never tried Bobas, so I can't speak on it, but my very thick 100% vg is vaping as if it were 100% pg. Vape is also thicker and almost velvety in the mouth.

Rick can you tell the the exact dimension of your wick?
Because based on your review and the "pristine" qualifier at the center of it, for me that is ;) ... i'm going to hunt for a 500 mesh like a wolf..

Rick I couldn't agree more. That wa my first experience. I quickly found my 3-4 or even 5 wrap not cutting it. I even went as high as 8. Yes...a bit high, but with 32 I had room considering I coil out I the hole and can control that easier. The one thing I did NOT do was plug the fill hole. Just not sold that made the difference.
I've actually struggled so badly with Boba's I've debated looking to other flavors and keeping boba in a tank. I just can't keep it in an atty without daily maintenance. And I mean a borderline tear down. GG goes 2 days. Sometimes 3. I preferred it on a DID but.....

I can't be the only ... with this problem with this flavor either. Anyone else vaping Boba's that has success keeping it going for longer than 1-2 days with maybe only a brush of coils, I'll take those tips :)

Backtracking a bit to the Drip Tip topic, because I just ran across a brilliant discovery by a poster (Doggin) in another forum.
Are you ready for this?
Instead of drilling out the Air Hole in the Top Cap for more vapor...
take a look at the bottoms of your drip tips! They come in various sizes. Some are fatter than others ...
I imagine this would also affect flavor to an extent. Because sometimes more vapor means less flavor and visa versa.

I'm sorry DSmooch, I never measure. I just take a square of the mesh, roll it without a paper clip or any thing, using a wooden table, and a block of wood. I do one fold at cut side, roll, and then using my body weight while holding the wood block, I tighten the wick by rolling in one direction between the table and wood block. I do this until the wick is solid and I can JAM it through the wick hole. Takes a bit of time, but I figure I can use wick for well over a month before it needs changing, maybe longer. Now I have since stumbled onto a piece of material that goes back to my bad boy days of my youth, in the sixties, when I use to smoke other things. This piece of bamboo material was used to roll a different substance, that shall remain nameless :) , and used it to experiment with rolling my next wick. Seems to have done a similar job, to the above wood block method, without the force required.

Strange experience to read yankeebobo. I still got that 10cm 500 wick in the DID with the same coil that i posted awhile ago. Mainly vaping bobas with this setup, sometimes 50/50 pg/vg grants vanilla custard (wich is a coilgunker to) with it. With 10 cm wide it isnt rolled that tight for a DID, i got a little hole in middle, think can atleast cramp 13-14 cm in a did. Did a few dryburns since i made it but thats it, no retorching wick yet.

see what I mean when I say "recreating the conditions" is THE challenge...
What I get is: your wick is tight as hell.... it fills the wick hole. I assume your fill hole is open.
Its already a lot of info... thanks a lot Rick!
what's the subtance?.. come on!!!

So I just built a new wick and coil and WOW. I am using a 7x4cm roll for my wick and a 3/4 wrap of 28 ga Kanthal A1 and it is amazing! Great warm vapor more vapor and flavor than I have experienced with anything else! I love this DID more and more with each new setup as I get better and better at making my coils.

I fail to understand it Mono. I truly do. I've struggled since day 1 with Boba's and the DID. But it's ONLY Boba's. I wrap a beauty on a coil, put BB in, vape for anywhere between 6-24 hours and it just turns metallic. I mean unvapable. I brush it twice a day figuring once isn't enough. Dry burn in between. Stop on my head, howled at the freakin moon while singing koombaya and pulse burning. NOTHING. Never worked for longer than a day. And my resolution? Pull the wick, torch it, new coil, another day gained. You can imagine what happens to THAT wick.
BUT....ANY other flavor I put in just kicks .... I've even change flavors to rule out the wick. Bam. I can vape for a week on that same coil. I think I just need to give up on Boba's in any atty. I've been at this for months now.
