see what I mean when I say "recreating the conditions" is THE challenge...
What I get is: your wick is tight as hell.... it fills the wick hole. I assume your fill hole is open.
Its already a lot of info... thanks a lot Rick!
what's the subtance?.. come on!!!

To me there's a difference between tight fit and tight roll.

Umm. Never mind.

So I just built a new wick and coil and WOW. I am using a 7x4cm roll for my wick and a 3/4 wrap of 28 ga Kanthal A1 and it is amazing! Great warm vapor more vapor and flavor than I have experienced with anything else! I love this DID more and more with each new setup as I get better and better at making my coils.
 Congrats to you!! I still get so overly happy whenever someone masters it and connects with the powers of the DID. The DID rocks, it really does. The patience of getting there is so worth it!!

Regarding 500 mesh...

I take back what I said before, just built a new ultra-thick wick with 500 and it is really nice. I was reading the 500 mesh thread and saw this posting about someone's modified method wick/coil building technique and wanted to try it so said hey why not try the 500 again and it worked a treat. I'm vaping 100% VG (IKV RY4 Gold) and on a sustained burn it out runs the cut-off switch.

Rick can you tell the the exact dimension of your wick?
Because based on your review and the "pristine" qualifier at the center of it, for me that is ;) ... i'm going to hunt for a 500 mesh like a wolf..

The wick I just built is ~37mm x ~110mm (I probably could've gone to ~130mm, but this worked great) - 5/6 wrap with Kanthal 30awg - ~2.5ohm vaping at 5.2v. Jack Frosted (pre-torched both sides before rolling), rolled till it fit in my Standard DID wick hole, trimmed to length (just below the top of the center post), DID 1 torch/quench, and then followed the method below.

The modified technique (http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/330407-500-ss-mesh-16.html#post7313274):)

Hubble's Technique
*Make and oxidize a tight dense wick per thread technique. Don't go overboard with oxidizing, you will do more later.
*insert wick into dry tank to check size and trim bottom of wick at an angle to help wicking. (I didn't angle cut)
*Eye where you want your coil to go on your wick. I wet a little piece of paper the length and position of my future coil to the wick. (I didn't use paper but did use a toothpick to measure where the wick met the tank)
*Take your wick out of the tank, tightly & evenly coil your wire how you want it. Leave both tails on the same side when finished.
*Trim tails to about a half inch. (I left mine longer because I find it easier to work with)
*Hold tails in needle nose pliers close to wick. (I used locking hemostats)
*Torch wick and coils to red and quench 2-3 times. (I only DID this once)
*Put down pliers and drip juice all over coils. Light to flame. Do this 2-3 times. Don't quench. (hold bottom of wick with pliers)
*Put wick back into tank
*Screw in top positive lead first making sure coils and wick touch nothing.
*With fingers or pliers (I used pliers), GENTLY pull bottom lead towards you to pull all the coils close to the wick.
*While holding wire with gentle tension, pull bottom lead under negative screw and screw down.

This tech breaks in your coil and wick before it even touches a battery. It also "trains" your coil to stay a tight coil and will not expand away from your wick ever again. Zero hotspots and zero shorts. Enjoy and I hope this helps that guy about to throw a Genesis out the window

Just placed my Order earlier today for a Gemini From MMVapors. Cannot wait to try this beautiful piece of Machinery. Any Idea approximately how long it might take to get here?

Sincerely;

Congrats bud! Generally, it's about 3, maybe 4 weeks to be in your hands.

I have got to try this again with a different juice. But I do have to ask. How did you get ~110mm in there? I did all I could to push 80 and it just didn't work with boba's.

need some help. got my DID a few days ago, and i just cant seem to get it right. Im using a new version provari, and ive tried 400 and 325 mesh, tight rolled super fat wicks, medium wicks, 30 and 32 ga kanthal, 3-6 wraps, i mean everything. ive read lots of different threads, watched tons of videos, and still cat get it. Mostly get a hot spot around the top of the coil by the center post, and dont seem to wick fast enough, the juice always tastes completely muted, or just plain burnt. anyone have any better reading they can link me to? i dont want to give up, but im starting to think this isnt for me.

Couple things to start from my top coil experiences. It can mean a short near that coil. That top has to almost appear to touch the post but not touch if you know what I mean. The wire leading from the ground I have found works best laying on the floor until it reaches the wick and then begins its climb.
Are you getting E errors? Or just not getting performance you want?
Snap a pic of how it's setup right now. There may be something obvious that stands out.

Try pushing the bottom down a little more. Although it looks like its low enough.
But mainly, it looks like the coil is coming off the top straight across the top nut and then you're wrapping counter clock. Try taking that top coil and as it comes off the wrap go BETWEEN the wick and nut and follow clock wise. Direction of the way the nut turns. It'll cut 1-2mm off the wire that is floating in the air. The less floating wire the better. The way I see it as you tighten the nut, it's actually offering a tad amount if extra wire instead of pulling it in. It should pull it in. Wedge a toothpick between wick and nut if you want to not pull in too far as you tighten.

Best part is these can be done without recoiling. Give those two a try.

built a new coil, and using your method listed above worked great. coil heats evenly with no shorts. actually my best looking coil so far, and i must have made 50 of em over the last 2 days. now the flavor.... im getting decent vapor, but the flavor isnt there. the wick looks wet-ish, but not soaked looking.

Glad to hear that the main issue is better. :)

Tip the DID over wick side down and let one drop come out the wick itself since your using an open hole. Almost like priming it so to speak. The wicking process should start just fine. Keep in mind that a few vapes of breaking in will enhance and get better as you go. Some break in fast, others even hours. Depending on their taste buds and juices. So this may impact your flavor.

As you break in your coil, increase the power and some vapor, flavor, and TH will dial in very nicely.

As for more on flavor, because its so subjective, I haven't had many flavor issues (except for one that I just can't vape in a DID), so maybe others can chime in as they come across here. Breaking in the coils helps.

A lot of us are going for solid wicks 100mm of mesh rolled tight. Try rolling some more and dropping it inside your current wick. More mesh more capillary action, more juice , more flavor. :)

You know cloud, this really bugged me. I just read another of your posts on the 500 thread. I think you hit on something that I did as well. I cut the darn wick after all that rolling. I think I'm going to revisit this today.
