Didn't see this anywhere but I picked it up in Dr. Siegel's blog comments from Friday-

new initiative would make possession of cigs chew a class c felony

This measure would make the sale, manufacture, or possession of tobacco products a Class C felony. The measure defines tobacco products as including “any product containing tobacco or nicotine that is expected or intended for human consumption.”

I haven't had a chance to check any other sources but there is documentation of an "Initiative Measure 512"-

Ouch. The PDF does say:

NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. The people recognize that the use of
tobacco products of all types is a significant public health problem.
Cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco can lead to lifelong
nicotine addiction. Cigar and cigarette smokers are at significant
risk for oral, throat, and esophageal cancers. Smokeless tobacco
products similarly raise users' risk of various diseases including
cancers of the lip, tongue, cheeks, and gums.
NEW SECTION. Sec. 2. A new section is added to chapter 9.91 RCW
to read as follows:
(1) It is unlawful to sell, manufacture, or possess any tobacco
products including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, and
smokeless tobacco.
(2) A person who:
(a) Sells or manufactures any tobacco product is guilty of a class
B felony punishable according to chapter 9A.20 RCW; or
(b) Possesses any tobacco product is guilty of a class C felony
punishable according to chapter 9A.20 RCW.
(3) For the purposes of this section, "tobacco product" includes
any product containing tobacco or nicotine that is expected or
intended for human consumption.

But, kinda' hard to get the full meaning without seeing the actual bill this is intended to amend. There has to be more to it.

One state tried to do this a few years ago (2003) and it was heavily lobbied AGAINST by - guess who - the ANTZ!

...committee members were frustrated last week with the testimony from anti-tobacco groups that testified against the tobacco ban, including the North Dakota Medical Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, North Dakota Public Health Association and North Dakota Nurses Association.

There’s no evidence banning tobacco would prevent and reduce tobacco use because no such approach has been implemented, the groups argued. The ban also could take away certain funding for these groups for tobacco control programs.

More proof that it's all about their funding, considering that there was no evidence that smoking bans, flavor bans, advertising bans and extortionist taxes would work before they tried it, either. In fact, the numbers show that they HAVEN'T worked - the huge number of quits that occurred happened before all of those were implemented (due to education about the health risks from the 1950's to the 1980's) and pretty much have stagnated since.

Presumably this section would also outlaw possession several pharmaceutical 'quit smoking' products, and most members of the nightshade family of plants (tomatoes, potatoes, etc.). I'd LOL if that got through, without them considering the unintended consequences

From the petition sponsor...

Name: Edward Stephen Dolan on Nov 22, 2011
Comments: This initiative is dedicated to my grandmother, Tot Brown, who survived throat cancer, and Rosa Garcia, who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer.

It's a shame the good doctor is not aware that nicotine doesn't cause cancer.

They don't know anything about nutrition either. In fact some doctors are so ignorant they are dangerous.

A 1982 study of nicotine concentrations in urine and saliva of 136 smokers and non-smokers, all of whom tested positive (GC nicotine assay). This study is famous for the fact the academics did not realise that nicotine is part of the diet, and therefore assumed that everyone is somehow exposed to tobacco smoke. Not sure how you can become a doctor without knowing anything about nutrition, one of, or perhaps the most, important factor in health:

Partly as a result of this trial, and because some people didn't believe that nicotine is a normal ingredient of the diet, the CDC tested 800 people, a mix of smokers and non-smokers, and all tested positive for nicotine. A standard nicotine test was given (the urinary test for cotinine).
CDC nicotine test

Nicotine is of course part of the general diet, as it is an ingredient in many vegetables. Everyone tests positive for nicotine or its metabolytes in the blood, unless they eat no vegetables. One form of it (a metabolyte of nicotine) is even a vitamin - Vitamin B3 or niacin (nicotinic acid vitamin).

Yes - there are plenty of fools who will tell you that nicotine is some sort of dangerously toxic poison. Mind you in large quantities it is - just like vitamin D, which has killed several people. Or water for that matter. The dose is the critical element.
