Maybe the heat from your electric stove burner will suffice?

Hold it close to the coil and heat that thing up good.

do i heat the coil while it's rolled around the wick? or am i heating the resiistance wire alone, just tryin to get my ducks in a row, all i have is the wick and wire that came with the ody so i dont wanna waste it

I've seen a few people talk about tempering the R wire by heating it with the flame from a cigarette lighter before installing it, but mostly in the context of Genesis attys. Thoughts on this?
i just built my third coil in 4 hours, i used the lighter on the R wire and i didnt notice the metalic taste in the vape like i had in the last 2. who knows tho, might just be in my head

I bet it makes a difference, I'll do some experimenting it. I think kanthal especially has a break in period that can be shortened by tempering the wire.

i would experiment but blew the vape budget for the month on the ody, the rate i mess up, im not even sure how long my current wire/wick will last

here is my setup mrkrinkle style. works insanely good.

I "Krinklefied" my first coil of that type today and the big mode is hitting like a nuke strike!

Two short pieces of wick fit perfectly in the housing.

Just need to not open the juice control too much and it is vape-a-thon on.

Hats off to Krinkle for coming up with this setup! :toast:

Right on guys... glad its working out for you and your enjoying it... Keep up the good vape... and to be honest my wick method came from a time when there were no spare ceramics available yet and I wanted to use my Nextel without taking the chance modding the ceramic and breaking it... so really it was a fortunate accident in a way... I really love the 0.9ohm dual coil method with the short wick and is my current daily vape with the short wick method...

:matrix: I just like this emote!!!

Very cool!

On post #14 urquidezj's post, 3 posts up, in the middle pic the ceramic looks really shiny on the facing side. Perhaps a reflection... No wicking issues without running the full channel?

I was going to post in the atomizer mods forum, but I was thumbing through this thread and just read MrKrinkle's last post and figured I'd throw a few of my questions out there, being that my focus is on the Ody.

I just received my new Ody today (with expansion kit) (I'm really primed about it too) and had a question on the wicking / sleeving material and coil wire gauging. I have a few bags of the COV Ody wick and a spool of the Nextel XC-116 Ceramic Sleeving.

I read all the safety notes /docs about the Nextel on the Omega site (where the sleeving came from). I'm still kind of wondering if it's safe to use as an inhalant.

Just curious if anyone here uses this material for wick and if so, I'm not really familiar with preparing it correctly prior to use.

Could someone please explain the preparation process of this Nextel sleeving and if you had a few pics to post during the process would be helpful as well. I understand the material should be burned "white hot" and soaked in vodka or a safe cleaner type fluid.

My primary ceramic cup channels have been slightly carefully filed out to allow for the extra thickness. I have 2 more spare stock ceramic cups, untouched.

Also... I was going to experiment with multiple type coils. I currently have the Kanthal R wire (32 gauge) & fine silver (30 gauge) NR wire. I going to make a single coil / a dual coil and was going to experiment with a triple coil.

I figured on the triple coil... finer wire and more coils.... any thoughts on my experiment or do you think I'd just be wasting time and wire?

I just want to experiment and see if I can tweak things up a bit...

Just a thought...

Peace-

Well first you prepare Nextel just how you stated....unless you have access to a kiln in which case you fire it between 1652f/1724f for one hour and allow it to cool as the kiln cools basically over night... at least thats how my Nextel gets fired which is highly recommended over torch & soak method... not so much for safety reasons is the kiln method better but for flavor and how it cures the Nextel... Opinions are mixed about its safety but by the research and its melting point there isnt a coil you could make that you would want to use that could vape the nextel itself.... some argue the fibers float but a wet fiber cant float through the air and a wet wick will not send fibers through the air.... I love my Nextel and have yet to find anything as good or better and if I do I will let you know...

Now as far as coils go... I have tried and used the single, a double and a triple coil.... I currently love the 0.9ohm dual coil with a fresh AW IMR pushing 4.2v... for me its very nice... and I do use the 32g Kanthal-A1.... 36g is best for HV coils at 8.4v or 7.4v because you will need to make a longer coil for me usually between 2.5 & 3.0ohm... I did not have very good results myself with the triple coil method but I did only try it once and will surely try again someday.... and this brings me to the beauty of the ODY/iAtty is that you can dial in what works best for you and find your sweet spot and tweek it as your tastes change... there is no wrong ohm or voltage as long as you enjoy it... granted there are ranges youll like such as 0.9 to 1.5ohms at 3.7v and 2.5 to 3.0ohm for HV 7.4v+ at least those are my sweet spots for me... but it may not be for you or the other guy... So play with it have fun and who knows you may discover the next best coil method...

Mr. K,

You got me to thinking about that kiln idea to cure the Nextel wick (sleeving) material. My first thought brought me back to being in the 4th grade making ceramic wall hangings, a pot holder and an ash tray. Then I got to thinking.... where the hell could I find a kiln...??? They can't be cheap. Its not like a common household appliance where you can just run to an appliance store and get one. (Although it wouldn't surprise me if Sears carried them)

So I did a search on pottery classes in my area and I found a few. Going to give a few places a call tomorrow and see if they would "do the right thing" and hook me up by kilning my string. I don't think it should cost anything to have done.

I figured if there was a pottery school nearby, I could just ask them if they wouldn't mind heating up some string for me.

Just a few questions, being as you stated that you have experience with this process.

I wrote down the temperatures and time that you suggested.

1) Can anything else be in the kiln while the wick is heating / curing? Like pottery... I guess? or does the wick need to be kilned pure - stand alone?

2) What type of surface should the Nextel be heated / cured on? (Meaning not to have anything unsavory absorb into the material while being treated).

3) If I get the nod from one of these fine folks, can I heat / cure the whole spool at once and rewind it back on the spool until ready for use? Or is this a kiln as needed process?

I have a spool with approximately 20' - 25' of material. I would imagine that that the material would have to be unspooled and laid out like a long piece of spaghetti. Am I correct in my assumption?

4) What would I look for to assure that this was done correctly? Is there like a litmus test or PH test or something, texture of the material, color and smell?

I never imagined my vaping experience to be that of a treasure hunter..... long story - most of my quest to kick start my vaping career leaks out across the boards of the ECF forum over the last couple of weeks.

Anyhow... thanks again in advance for your input.

Peace-
