Surfing the web for how to fight the bugs/slugs that were devouring the hostas in my flower bed.

Came across a website for homemade solutions that said 4 parts water, 1 part tobacco - let sit for a few hours, and spray plants once a week.

I recall (now that I'm writing this) that nicotine used to be used as a pesticide but is now banned.

However, I have almost a full carton of analogs left over in the fridge.

I think I'll give this a try...
Anyone else ever doe this?

tobacco plants produce nicotine as a defense mechanism against pests, so it makes sense.

I'm pretty sure that a bottle of insecticide costs less than a carton of cigarettes, LOL... but if they're just going to waste, you might as well give it a shot.

I would just be careful if you have pets - the insecticide I use specifically states on the bottle that it's safe to use around pets (except fish, for some reason?) but I would be worried about nicotine, my cats love to eat my houseplants...

Not much of a gardener - this flower bed (which I hardly ever see) was empty for many years.. My dogs are not allowed in that part of the yard (tether doesn't go that far) so I don't have to worry about that.

Guess I got a itch this year to spruce up the yard. Also planted 2 fig trees in planters) and put in same bed but they are fine.

Yes insecticide would prob be cheaper but hey - might as well make use of something I was just going to throw away.
