As the title says, I am new to mechanical mods, and new to vaping. I currently have a Chi-U, Stillaire tank, and a dynasty drip tip. I am using 24 gauge kanthal wire, 2 coils with 4 twists per coil. Ohms are at .27. The way I understand it, ohms decrease when less wire is used. Fewer ohms means more vapor. I would like to get to around .2 ohms, .17 being the lowest I would feel comfortable with. My question is, would more wraps per coil not create more surface area for the wick, thus creating more vapor? Or if less wire is the way I need to go for more vapor, does anyone have any suggestions on number of coils I should go for, or gauge of wire?

welcome @NorthGuard - that's pretty low sub ohming especially for someone who is new to it. Please read through all of the safety info on here about subohming before you get into really low stuff like that. make sure your batteries can handle it, and you have some idea about ohms law.

Here are some good resources to start you out with:

more wire does mean more surface area to burn juice yes. but when dealing with mech mods (which are unregulated) your coil is what deems your output wattage.

These are all good points.

You're already quite low resistance wise, so you might want to rethink all the variables if you're not getting good results. I don't mean to be rude, New Comrade NorthGuard, but simply going lower and lower probably isn't the brightest possible strategy at this point.

So this is where the variable voltage mods come in handy?

Yes, but in order for you to get the vapor you're looking for with a VV/VW mod you will need a mod that can go up to at least 30W, preferably 50W. Here's what you can do, find a smaller wrapping post, for instance, I use a mini-paperclip and 26 gauge kanthal with 8 wraps and I get a resistance around 0.28-0.33. With 24 gauge and a tiny wrapping post, you could wrap around 7 times and get exactly what you're looking for in resistance.

After reading some of the supplied links, I think I will stick with what I have for the time being. Wayyy too much I don't understand yet.

Thanks. I have been using the small screwdriver that came with my atomizer. But before I do anything I think I have a lot more reading to do, lol.

Ahh yes, if you get a small wrapping post you can surely go much lower. Reading is good, there are is lot of safety education to be done with mechanical mods.

Up your diameter one size and add a wrap to get close to the same ohms. I like 5/32 now with 28 5 wraps at .4 ohms.
I'm a convert to the big coils too, although I prefer a much higher resistance. This allows me to do 10 wraps with 26g and still come out at 1.4 or so . . . now that's surface area!

I'm all about optimal taste rather than instant clouds, so this system really works for me.

Standby while we break for an important news announcement:

:danger: Not advisable for a novice to be sub-ohming and not know what they are doing.

What battery are you using? I'm hoping its a VTC with that low of ohms....

And the ohms will go higher with the more wraps. Ohms will lower with the thicker gauge of kanthal. So 24 gauge is quite thick. The thicker wire will take longer to heat up so will take a few seconds before vapor really starts to produce... also thicker wire takes a longer time to cool down. Honestly with 22 gauge I'd probably do around 6-7 wraps around a 5/64" drill bit which should give you around .3-.4 ohm dual coils. This will be quite a nice warm vape and will produce some decent clouds with the stillare.

Also, Don't think anybody is flaming you for sub-ohming. A lot of us do. You DO however need to do more research specifically on battery safety with going that low of ohms. Read more about how to wrap coils and such. Safety is our top priority on this site... we don't want others to get hurt (bad publicity).

I have an 18650 battery. The guy at the vape shop set me up with my build and did tell me to research before I tried doing anything differently, and briefly explained ohms to me. I have had this build for 3 weeks now and was wanting to try different things, just wanted wanted to find out more about it.

What's the battery brand name?
If it doesn't say anything which color is it and number on it?
