hey all,

back story first....
i am now recovering (should be last day) from a flu/cold that affected my throat, taste buds, nose and everything else. before getting sick (the past few weeks) i have had vapers tongue. this is only an assumption because i was/am getting almost zero taste from my liquids that i once got taste from. hopefully i am healthy in a day or two and my vapers tongue vanishes soon.

on to it...
i am interested in creating my own e-juice (i think this is the most appropriate term, please correct me if im wrong). mostly because of cost, trying something new and having the ability to tailor my flavours to my liking.
first things first, read. i did a lot of reading over the past few hours (gotta love being off of work today). my reading was not exclusive to this site but most info was gathered here on one thread or another. (side note, big thanks to everyone who contribute to the community and help those with less experience with what they need)
ive compiled a short list of basic items needed to start my journey into diy liquids.

list...
empty bottles (for mixes)
syringes with low gauge needles (measure and transfer liquids)
droppers/pipettes (when experimenting with bigger batches i assume or dropping onto my rda)
unflavoured pg and vg with nic. (curious why i should use these versus pg and vg and nic to make a more tailored mix)
pure pg/vg (i guess to more tailor the mix from above, still a bit unclear why i need both instead of just this or just the above)
flavouring (obvious)
latex/nitrile gloves (for safety reasons pertaining to handling liquids that may be dangerous to skin contact)
isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning, a clean station is a happy station. cooking background, can ya tell?)
trays or the like (for catching spills and easy cleaning)
tweezers (no idea why i need these but i have them so i may have a use for them)

so i really only have a few questions before i start ordering things...
1. what ppg/vg/nic should i get? im a bit unclear on why you would want both pure and pg/vg mixed with nic.
2. did i miss anything on my list? im big on being prepared and id rather not start mixing and realize that im missing something and have to wait longer.
3. i will wait to test mixes until my vape tongue is gone but is it normal to taste fresh and then steep and test again or just let steep first and then test? i know most mixes get better with age and being new, id like to know what people normally do.
4. i will look into getting an ultrasonic cleaner because steep times suck. is there a recommended model or site to use or will any do? seems like they're all about the same.
5. ive seen some reviews for sites for flavour/nic/pg/vg both positive and negative, is there a common agreement on best site for each?
6. what do most people test their mixes with? id probably use my basic rda and maybe have my buddy taste test as well on his rda unless there is a better option.
7. have i missed anything else?

thanks in advance to anyone who reads this and more thanks if you offer answers/opinions/comments.
cant wait to get a few things better understood and start ordering

1. what ppg/vg/nic should i get? im a bit unclear on why you would want both pure and pg/vg mixed with nic.

The NIC solution should be in either PG or VG and not a mixture of both. First determine if you want to vape mostly PG or mostly VG for example 75pg/25vg then you would get your nic in PG if your going to vape mostly VG 75vg/25pg then get your nic in vg. You will usually get a strong concentration of nic (60mg or 100mg then mix it down to your vaping strength (6,12,18,24) this is why you also need to get a plain bottle of VG and a bottle of plain PG. Also get the ejuice me up calculator to help you calculate the percentages. Read my blog on mixing

2. did i miss anything on my list? im big on being prepared and id rather not start mixing and realize that im missing something and have to wait longer.

Read my blog on beginner mixing

3. i will wait to test mixes until my vape tongue is gone but is it normal to taste fresh and then steep and test again or just let steep first and then test? i know most mixes get better with age and being new, id like to know what people normally do.

Taste it right after mixing then let it steep. Tasting your mix right away will give you a baseline as to how it's steeping. read my blog on steeping

4. i will look into getting an ultrasonic cleaner because steep times suck. is there a recommended model or site to use or will any do? seems like they're all about the same.

most importantly get one with a 30 minute timer. Heat is not nesessary but make sure it's big enough to hold what you expect to make. read my blog on steeping. Read this thread on UC's

5. ive seen some reviews for sites for flavour/nic/pg/vg both positive and negative, is there a common agreement on best site for each?

you can search the forum there are many threds on that but wizard lab, ecigexpress, RTS and vapingzone are the most common places

6. what do most people test their mixes with? id probably use my basic rda and maybe have my buddy taste test as well on his rda unless there is a better option.

A cheap 510 atty with a small peice of cotton works well.

7. have i missed anything else?

Yes read my blogs it will go into detail covering everything you asked and so much more.

Read my blogs before getting started

then read hoosier's blogs.

then read the stickies at the top of the page.

this will explain a lot of the how's and why's.

I buy my Nic and flavors from Wizard Labs (You can also get PG and VG there). You can get Nic in either VG or PG there. I also get PG and VG so I can tailor my PG/VG ratio to my liking. If you wanted a 50/50 mix at lets say 18mg/ml Nic strength. You could get 36mg/ml Nic in VG and only get PG along with flavors (most flavors are in PG). You would use 50% Nic to get down to 18mg (This is just an example)

I've been doing it awhile and I get 100mg/ml Nic so I add both PG and VG along with my flavors. That's why some people get both.

You might want to download a juice calculater to play arond with to get a better idea what to order. I use this one and you can download it free here:

thanks, ive already gone over those as suggested in other threads. this was more of a personal summary to make sure i wasnt missing anything. your pg/vg/nic comment makes sense though. i guess i just thought it would be easier getting the 3 completely separate so you do it all instead of get vg with nic and dilute it with pure vg and then add pg and flavoring.

i will look into those websites though for liquid.

@wings thanks, i actually started playing with the calculator (that one and a few others) earlier and they all seem pretty straight forward

seems like my buy list is set so far. my theory of mixing seems correct. this may all be starting faster than i thought

Looks like you're set to go...in my case I knew pretty much what few flavorings I was after. Never cared for fruits/drinks/desserts and whatnot, so I just ordered several of the same flavorings from different flavor manufacturers to see which ones I like best...and now I'm mainly on the constant lookout for tobacco's and good vanilla's for when I want something fancy...

...and oh yeah, read my blog...on second thought...never mind, I don't have a blog, but I have tons of notes everywhere :~)

i did get tripped up a few times but after like 30 minutes browsing forums (any, not just this one), my brain autocorrects it before i comprehend it. weird how the brain works.

im going to get a cart or few made up and post it up here before ordering to make sure i havent over-looked something or if anyone believes i need something not already listed.

do most people mix in the bottles they use or mix seperate and then fill bottles? (i.e. mix a 15ml bottle and use or mix in graduated cylinder and pour into 15ml bottle)

so, looking at bottles. any suggestions?
i was looking at these because theyre clear and like 7ml so i can make smaller batches while testing and starting the diy stuff. are they safe to use in a USC or what is reccomended for that application?
