So I sampled my first batch last night, and much as expected it was pretty meh. Flavor was very muted even after a hot bath and a couple days steeping. I am not a fan of VG, i was aiming for a 70/30 mix. I'm using 50/50 Nic and i used the amount prescribed based off of Ejuicemeup to achieve 70/30, but it was way off. My question is, using a 50/50 Nic, aiming for 70/30 for a 5ML batch, should i even bother adding VG?
Sorry if this question is out there, like all things ecig there is a lot of material to go over and I've been doing the reading I can.

I'm missing some data.

I know the PG/VG, 50/50, ratio of the base nicotine. I know the target PG/VG, 70/30, ratio and batch volume, 5ml.

Do not know what the mg/ml of the base nicotine, the target mg/ml, nor the total flavoring %. The phrase, "..., but it was way off.", is confusing as well. I'm assuming your flavorings are PG since those are the most common and they are adding PG to the mix, but I do not know if PG is also going in from a bottle of plain PG.

It's difficult to say if you should bother adding VG.

That's strange I just got a PM this morning asking the very same question and they supplied me with the same exact amount of information. I answered back with your very same response (Didn't provide enough info). Could it be the same person with 2 user id's on this forum.

Not the same person dannyv45, didn't PM you.

Do not know what the mg/ml of the base nicotine Nicotine base is 48MG
the target mg/ml, target of 18MG
total flavoring %. Total flavoring of 20%
The phrase, "..., but it was way off.", is confusing as well Flavor was very muted, don't know how else to describe it. I could taste the hint of flavoring, but that was all.

What you first need to determine is what mg strength you want your base to be. Lets assume 18%. Using the ejuice me up calculator to make a 30ml 70pg/30vg/18mg base you would need:

Nic solution (50/50/48mg) = 11.25ml or 37.5%
VG = 3.38ml or 11.27%
PG = 15.38ml or 51.27%

that would give you your base of 18mg. The flavor also counts towards the PG content so this can also be figured into the calculations within the calculator.

Then choose the flavors you want to try and add them at the lowest recommended percentages and work your way up. I would start with one flavor first then work your way up to combinations of flavors.

It could also be that you are not steeping your juice which is a big aspect of DYI. Some mixes require no steeping and others (Expecially tobacco) require 2 - 5 weeks. It's all trial and error but that's half the fun.

read my blogs for more information.

then read hoosiers blogs

there is a wealth of information there.

Great, something to work with here!

First I should point out that under that picture of me is the line, "Blog Entries: 3". Click that 3 and then the Flavoring Level blog. In that blog is the way to find the right flavoring level which is usually completely different than most new mixers think it should go.

So with 50/50 nicotine at 48mg/ml to make a 5ml batch of 18mg/ml it takes 1.88ml of the 48mg/ml. (0.94ml PG and VG)
20% Flavoring is 1ml so we're up to 1.94ml of PG and 0.94ml of VG.
To make a 5ml batch at 70/30 we need a total of 3.5ml PG and 1.5ml of VG. So to finish the batch, hit the target nic and hit the target PG/VG, it needs 1.56ml of PG and 0.56ml of VG.

If your target PG/VG was 81/19 then no VG would be needed, but to hit your target of 70/30, you will need to add some VG.

Be sure to at least read down to levels 7 & 8 of my blog and see if the very muted compared to the smell of the juice fits the description of those levels, or not.
