The learning curve hasn't been that daunting - availing oneself of resources like this forum, google & youtube get's you up to sped pretty quick.
The endless avalanche of acrynoyms in the vaping world though, my goodness ... it's like a government agency has been put in charge of naming things.
The most pleasant surprise of my noob journey has been the genuinely helpful & accomidating attitudes of most of the folks involved in the on-line vamping community.

I'd say get into RBAs as soon as you can. Save your pennies, get a kayfun/Russian 91 or clone, learn to build a micro coil from watching YouTube vids (its easy), get a mechanical mod and enjoy the best vaping experience without wasting your hard earned on all the ego/clearomiser/protank stuff.

Only my opinion but I wish I'd done the above.

I think it's important for newcomers to understand that you don't have to have the "latest and greatest" to get started on vaping, and stopping smoking!

I would even say that it is important for newcomers NOT to start with the "latest and greatest". Learn how to crawl before learning how to fly.

I jumped right into mods and mech mods within a week of starting vaping, but that's just because I'm ridiculous and like to party hard. I have actually been thinking quite a bit lately as I review my money spent, deal with the little quirks of each one of my mods and hide from the laughter or my wife that I could've saved a lot of time/money just sticking with my EVOD starter kit.

I would disagree with that, some people are perfectly happy with an ego and an evod... A kayfun might have ruined the vaping experience for them.
I say start at the beginning and find your self along your own vaping journey.

I started with a good ole inferno and lava tank carto set up since then I've stepped up to a evod vv and a t3s and a kanger unitank absolutely loving them. The best thing I can say about being overwhelmed is beware of all the juices out there try to taste before you buy a 15$ bottle of a disgusting blend.

And now that I have been vaping for a year or so I'm eager to get into a VTR. With a rba and some sweet new Freemason juice.

In my opinion, I think it's better to start out with a relatively simple to use set up, like an Evod, Ego or Spinner with a clearomizer. Spend some time getting used to vaping and in finding some good 'go-to' e-liquids and stabilizing your nic level. When you are ready to look at upgrading or moving to a mod or building your own coils, etc., spend some time reading up on the different types available - tube mods, bottom feeders, box mods, regulated, unregulated, etc., and particularly if you go to a mechanical mod or to building your own coils, read up on battery safety and how to know you have the right battery for your application.

Everyone's journey will be different - just make sure you're doing it safely - and if you're satisfied with what you are using, don't feel that you *have* to move up to something bigger and shinier.

Cool thread. I'm new to vaping and it's insanely overwhelming. I thought I had figured out how to make my tank better and tried to switch the wick on the wick thing (yup don't know what it's called). Ended up breaking it since the original wick had wires on it. I was lucky I had another thing that came with the tank or I'd have been doing more analogs.

Glad this forum is here. It'll keep me from getting con'd at stores. Had previously bought 3 lame tanks without knowing much.

Wow, this is confusing. I just got my first ecig last Sunday. I got it in Florida but evidently I can't get the liquid shipped here To Canada..Any advice would be appreciated. Been 3 days since my last cigarette. I think this is great, but not sure what to do about getting more liquid. I have ego-t. Mixed two flavors and I really like it. Have to do some serious research when I get back to Canada. This simple set up seems to be working for me

only overwhelming part for me is having to explain to everyone and deal with all the questions surrounding what the hell i am "smoking" haha. I welcome the questions...if they are from smokers and see if I can help them kick the habit just like I did. The questions from non smokers can get quite annoying though, but hell, making everyone knowledgeable of the benefits of vaping over smoking is best for everyone!

I wasn't really overwhelmed till I came here ;) just ignorant as all get out... all I knew was that the drugstore disposables sucked, and I knew there must be a better way. When I got here, THEN I was overwhelmed, just so MANY better ways! I was really confused, knowing I wanted somethng that would feel "similar" in my hand and at my lips, but had no idea what that might be. Then Alisa1970 gave me the lead on the eRoll -- perfect cigalike! No techie weirdness to learn! And not very expensive, either. And now, 4 wks later, I think I've even found an eJuice to suit me. And my "pack a day" has become "half a pack a day," which is on the order of a miracle. :D Now I'm starting to look at the iTaste vv3, so people will stop "reminding" me that I can't put cinnamon redhot in a plastic tank -- figure if I get that, with some glass/pyrex clearomizers, they'll stop yammering at me about how cinnamon redhot will fold, spindle, and mutilate my tank. :D

Glad I found this forum a couple days before I quit smoking. I knew I was going to bite the bullet that Friday but didn't want to wait for vapemail. Figured I'd check out the closest b&m and see if they had any good deals, ended up with a Smoktech Winder and a couple t3s tanks and other than flooding they have been working pretty good. At least I'm smoke free for almost two weeks!

I still am looking for a good adv juice, been to all three of the local vape shops and while 2 of the 3 had knowledgeable staff (the other was a tobacco outlet that doubled as a mini vape supply store) they were very helpful. I only found flavors that were "decent" to me at least. Yesterday I caught a little bit of a bug and ordered an MVP v2 and protank2 mini, and put in an order to the vapor chef for some 6ml samples. I figured as a chef in my professional life we have something in common and hopefully I find a new ejuice home!

With all the helpful people here and as many technical hobbies I've had in the past this is just another place I can learn and haven't been overwhelmed yet. Just have to remember to start at the beginning when taking up a new hobby, even if its a replacement to a previous addiction. Someone said it best that I read on here yesterday ”I never joined a forum for smoking cigarettes", that made me chuckle a bit because it's so true!

*Round of applause!!* Congrats, that is awesome! I haven't laid 'em down completely yet, but they seem to be getting less and less, so at least it's going in the right direction... :)

Cool; I'm no chef, just a housewife that loves to cook (and my family seems to think I'm really damn good at it -- they eat every bite and look around for more, so I know they're not just SAYING that!), and I agree, this is kinda fun, mixing flavors to come up with your very own favorites.

What kind of ADV are you looking for, something tobacco, or non-tobacco? If it's tobacco... what kind of cigarettes did you smoke? I'm a VA slims smoker (for a little longer!) and it was very hard to find a tobacco flavor I like, because VA slims are not sweet at all; think I've finally found it, though, and I find myself reaching more for my eRoll that dragging my .... outside for a ....... :D

Congrats!

To all the newbies out there please don't be overwhelmed by all this info here. I been cig free for 4 months and this is my setup ego twist with a kanger protank mini. Granted I have 2. They have worked flawlessly with just some basic coil maintenance and good juice And i am very happy. Just to let you know u can get off really cheap and vape like a pro...In have those tanks filled with Hawksauce and Grape both from Mount Baker Vapor and got the Protank minis and ego's off ebay. Dont see any reason to upgrade at this time...

When you're all set, things are easy! Glad you found your sweet spot regarding juice & hardware!

Yep. I started vaping two days ago and haven't had a cigarette in 47 and a half hours. Woo Hoo! Getting the hang of it is a little overwhelming. It's not too bad, but I'm having a hard time with refilling the cartomizer. I got some of the liquid into the middle part and when I took a drag I think some got in my mouth. It probably wasn't much but, after being warned about the dangers of nicotine being absorbed through skin, I kinda freaked out. It had been a long time since I've tasted dish soap but I'm not giving up!
I'm really glad this forum exists! I've read a lot of posts today while working up the courage to add one and everyone seems really supportive.

Serious Newbie Alert: Like using my new e-cigg, I'm also trying to figure out how to post on this thread. If this shows up twice I'm really sorry!
