Nic Base Storage: Freezer vs. Room Temp Experiment

FWIW, the older NN and VT freezer samples smelled like I'd expect them to smell, fairly faint, not at all obnoxious.

The CX-PG was almost odorless.

The CX-VG smelled the strongest of all of these. I'd describe the smell as "nutty". I'm at a loss to explain why the VG sample has a much stronger smell than the the PG sample. One would think that the nic would be the same, right? Its' also obvious the darkest of these samples.

I dumped the left-overs of both CX bottles into a graduated cylinder to mix down to my usual 13 mg/ml unflavored base. I'll start using it soon.

The NN and VT left-overs went back in the freezer as to get used at a later date.

Second half of January for these at the earliest. I'm headed north next weekend and won't be back here until mid January.

But I do have some older samples up in PA that I haven't posted updates about in quite some time. Hopefully, I'll get to those Thanksgiving weekend or soon thereafter.

I mixed the remnants down the other day using what was left of both the PG and VG nics then doing my calculations as though the base was 50/50 PG/VG. The resulting 13mg unflavored juice looks pretty good:

I started vaping it yesterday -- straight unflavored, which is my "ADV".

First impressions after a full day: I am not a fan of this nic. It tastes OK; it's not at all like I remember some oxidized nic tasting. In fact, it tastes pretty clean when actually vaping it. But all day yesterday, it was leaving some kind of after-taste on my palate, which I can't really describe. As of today, that's mostly gone, which isn't a surprise, because I tend to become de-sensitized to such things pretty quickly. But what hasn't gone away it that it's somehow harsher/stronger than the nics I'm used to vaping. Some people might like that. I personally do not.

For reference, I've been vaping NN recently, but back in PA I'm still working on some WL, and I don't notice anywhere near this kind difference between those.

There is one possible explanation for this, which would be that the 250 ml graduated cylinder I was using isn't quite accurate at the very bottom and I ended up with "13mg" liquid that's actually stronger than I intended it to be, although I'm hard pressed to believe that it would be enough to account for what I'm feeling here.

The reason I am interested in your taste test is because I have started my DIY journey with CX’s PG, 100mg nic. And to date, it remains the only nic I have used in all my mixes. I could (and should and will) use the NR nic I purchased a few weeks back to compare with my CX nic but honestly I value your opinion far more than mine because you are an experienced unflavored vaper. I am not. Everything I have mixed is flavored and because of this I cannot determine what flavor impact my nics impart (if any). Not when I am mixing dozens of different flavors (which mostly all suck because I’m just getting started with DIY not to mention I’m a picky bastich to begin with).

I’m going to mix some unflavored with NR and compare it with my CX too. But again, I don’t trust my inexperienced palate as much as yours. Are you done with CX or are you going to give it another shot?

I would have to call it a taste, but it didn't remind me of anything in particular, so I can't characterize it further than that.

Keep in mind that what I'm vaping now is half PG base, which was as close to odorless as any nic I've ever had, and half VG base, which had a quite noticeable odor that I'd describe as "nutty".

Are you done with CX or are you going to give it another shot?

I will probably vape what I mixed (waste not, want not), but I will likely mix it with some of my regular unflavored.

Will I buy more? No, for the money, I'd rather have NN. But it doesn't matter anyway, because I already have plenty of nic. I produced these two CX samples "for science".

In fact, I forgot to mention one of the reasons I got this stuff is due to CX's advice not to freeze nic.

PS: I suspect nic base, especially for people who vape unflavored, is a lot like cigarettes were for most of us: People like what they're used to. Ya switch to something else and you tend not to care for it much at first. But if what you had previously is no longer available, you'll get used to the new eventually.

Probably a six - 8 hour drive. We aren't sure we are moving, but it's a strong possibility.

Honestly if it's cool/cold where your packing the nic for travel I'd just put it in a cooler, doubt it would get any lasting damage. If in a warm/hot environment ice packs in a cooler might be sufficient.

That's what I've been hoping to hear. Ice packs and maybe in one of those newer high-tech coolers would be easy to do, but it would be disastrous if it was damaged.

Has anyone reported their bostons breaking in the freezer? I have had several people suggest they will break in the freezer. Seeing many people here are storing their nic in bostons in the freezer I would not agree with these people. Particularly using the methods outlined thruout this thread.

I had that same question a while back and Rossum pointed out that because nic doesn't expand when frozen that there'd be no reason for the glass bottles to shatter in the freezer. I'd been storing my nic successfully in amber glass bottles in the fridge set to 2 degrees C for a few years and wanted to move my stock to the freezer for longer term storage. I've done that now and feel confident there'll be no breakage.

My (96)120ml bottles with very minimal headspace (small bubble) have been stored at -15f
brought to room temp (76deg) yearly (5 times to defrost the freezer)
went through a 10 day hurricane power outage at 90+deg
No breakage, good as new.

It appears most (if not all) people here (including myself) have our nic in freezers for long term storage. And we also keep a working bottle in the fridge. Since nic solution does not freeze, is there any reason why it cannot also be stored in the freezer (albeit it will be thicker)? What am I missing here?
