Ok - I'm late to the game. Good thing I'm a guy, I would have driven my boy friends nuts cause I'm late with everything.
Finally made my 1st nickel mesh wick. I got my 1st RSST today and thought why not, lets try the nickel. I started with 12mm of the mesh and rolled it around a needle. Then I torched it lightly. When it 'glowed' I just passed the flame along its length then back again. Then for old times sake I gave it 3 juice burns.
I pre-wrapped the coil around a #37 (.104 inches) drill bit. I actually started w/ a bigger bit, but the wick was much too loose. Installed the coil, slipped the wick into it, then pulsed the switch a few times and it settled right down. Wire was 28g Kanthal, came out to 1Ω.
Dripped some juice onto it, and burned it off, repeated this a few times then filled the tank.
Yikes! Its working. Vapor production is decent, taste it a bit muted. I've only been vapin' on it 'bout a 1/2 hr so we'll see if it improves.
I was real tempted to put a white ceramic into the RSST as the wick hole is gi-hugh-ic! If I were to make another nickel wick for this, I'd use at least 15mm of the mesh. I didn't have much trouble rolling it, it does compress easily so you have to be careful. It was tricky to work with because it is so delicate, it's real easy to crush it when rollling or even if you have to tweak the coil. And with the RSST pos connection, you need to take care not to pull to tight and bend and/or crush it when making the connection. As the ceramic wicks are 'snap' prone this mesh is 'crush' prone.
edit: I just passed this to my wife to try/taste. Her taste buds are much better than mine and she said it tastes fine. She recognized the juice right away and said it tastes good. I'll go with her opinion, I was vaping a small chamber atty all day and the flavor in that atty is just better IMHO.
