i believe it was the foam itself that held hemp - read ekowool
- and ao together!
Did you "secure" the NI foam around the AO wick with wire or something?
Was the view worth the climb?
As far as I know all attys use Ni foam for bridge and around the ceramic cup. Years ago I rebuilt some attys using SS wool instead of the Ni foam. Worked OK.i dont see why you cant find this in stainless steel? Is this perhaps what the 306 attys use for the bridge?
Is the ceramic wick full length?
I tried a variation of BJ's NI encased AO wick and I am absolutely loving it.
I put a single layer JUST around the part of the wick sticking below the deck.
- With the wick still out of the atty, I wrapped a layer around the wick. The NI held its shape well, no need to tie it around the wick at all.
- I slid the resulting NI sleeve off the wick and then lightly rolled it in my fingers to shrink the diameter of the NI sleeve a hair. This way it held snugly around the wick in the next step.
- I then held the NI sleeve in the bottom part of the atty while I slid the wick in through the top of the deck and into the NI foam sleeve.
- Put the glass back on my atty and coiled it up.
I am utterly convinced that it is enough of an incremental improvement to make it worth the effort.
- I dont have to worry about rotating the wick to face downward towards the bottom when I vape.
- I can clearly see that it keeps the AO wick wetter as it holds a reservoir of juice right on the wick regardless of what degree I have the atty turned.
- Far fewer dry hits with no intentional tilting. I consciously avoided doing the Genny-tilt for 3 tanks and found I dont need to anymore, even on a low tank. The most I had to do was at the VERY bottom of the tank I would just swirl it once to moisten the NI foam just before I vaped, and then vape normally without tilting.
- You can even see the meniscus of juice riding up the side of the tank.

glad to read that our experiment is itself worthwhile!
and hoping that all participants are following this thread!
Did a kerosene lamp burn with an Ao wick encapsulated with 4 wraps of 400 SS mesh and it also improved the wicking of the Ao. One wrap of SS mesh did not improve it.

Hey BJ, can you point me to the Kerosene Lamp test method? I would love to rig up something inhouse to test wicks with and the principle sounds very "sound". I have plenty of oil lamps, maybe I can convert one of those.
Do you think "Oil Lamp" fuel would work?
I once had 10 kerosine lamps going at night with the lights out in our kitchen sink. I was observing the flames and timing the results. My wife came in and thought I was crazy, she thought I was into Voodoo or some other Santeria.![]()
