As of now, I'm not very familiar with how fuel cell technology works, but the first concern that comes to mind, and I know this was already mentioned, is the liability involved with manufacturing a product where the methanol could potentially be accidentally ingested. That could cause severe problems.

"Methanol ingested in large quantities is metabolized to formic acid or formate salts, which is poisonous to the central nervous system, and may cause blindness, coma, and death..." -Wikipedia article on methanol

If I were a manufacturer, I would think twice about producing a methanol-based fuel cell for this sort of application. I would think that there has got to be a better, less-toxic option for a fuel. That being said, I do think this is a really cool idea, and wonder what kind of cost-per-unit something like this would have..

Lots of excellent observations. The quantities involved are "pretty small" though & let's not forget that years ago when we all distilled our own "hooch" we often ingested "small" quantities of Methanol 'cause we were either "too lazy" or didn't know how to avoid it when distilling "Ethanol" (drinking alcohol). I'm pretty sure, as well, that if users were completely aware of the Lithium-ion risks... they'd "freak" at those as well.

If I was to take a guess to who this guy is and what his motives are I would say This guy probably works for one of many cigarette company's trying to break into e-cigs and is looking to make cigalikes devices practical as an all day vape since that's what their customer base would most closely relate to. Besides it would have the most profit potential. Being able to sell all those little and most likely unrefillable cartridges and menthol for power. Just a though....

:( .... probably correct, but I'm thinin' "vape-batteries" are very nearly as big a Global business as cell-phone batts... not?

Not even close! Roughly 472 million mobile devices sold in 2011. 2.5 million (est.) e-cigs sold in 2011. Phones and laptops are the core market for battery technology right now, and have been for a while. Much like I was reading on Candle Power forums the other night, they are resisting the temptation to go mainstream with 18350 batteries because they don't think we are a large enough group to influence the market to improve development.

I forgot the links, sorry! http://www.csdecisions.com/2012/03/22/e-cigarettes-are-here-to-stay/ http://www.email-marketing-reports.com/wireless-mobile/smartphone-statistics.htm

We definitely need something post apocalypse cause I don't want to hand-crank charge my e-cig.

They make solar chargers for Li-Ion batteries already, go to CPF Marketplace and search for "Cottonpicker". He makes varies sizes and shapes that are set up just for this.

If one of the current e-cig companies could come up with that they would, who wouldn't want something like that? The bigger devices could probably be used for a week, who wouldn't want that?

The real problem is the plates longevity. You get a 20W generator that lasts 2000hours and costs 800$ and weighs 4lbs with fuel.

I don't think a 4 lb PV would sell well.

Thanks for that hilarious visual!
