I really don't think that's the way to go, actually, do you? 8-o

I would like to see it, but I don't believe that it will happen in my lifetime. Just commenting on the irony. Next they will ban cigarettes when a villain is placed before the firing squad.

I can assure you that when I served in the USAF the concern for smoking was more about protecting equipment and sensitive electronics than it was about freedom or even the soldiers health. It makes no sense to warn about possible illness in later years when you have to worry about more imminent concerns. What does happen is that popular medical/cultural policies are backdoored and ushered in quietly. Once a base adopts a new rule, others follow suit.

My son, a non-smoker, is based in Iraq and his main concern is the duststorms and heat. The cigarettes are not being phased out of his base. Some nonsmokers will smoke to fill in the "downtime" of when they are not actively engaged. That's alot of time...boredom sets in....it's easy to fill some of that time with a smoke. I doubt the Military will find anything to replace smoking as a stress reliever. They will lie low on this so as not to give the appearance that society is dictating military policy. :)

I agree Bob - Weapons are an unfortunate necessity for now - We could however ban Wars of Choice perhaps? ;)

That would demonstrate some real concern for the health and safety of the brave and loyal young men and women to whom we owe so much more than we can ever possibly hope to repay with a simple thank you - still - I do say Thank You!

Pentagon won't ban war-zone smoking, despite study.

Pentagon wont ban war-zone smoking despite study - Road Runner

    Excerpts:
Press secretary Geoff Morrell pointedly told a Pentagon news conference that Defense Secretary Robert Gates is not planning to prohibit the use of cigarettes, chewing tobacco or other tobacco products by troops in combat.

"He knows that the situation they are confronting is stressful enough as it is," Morrell said, noting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "I don't think he is interested in adding to the stress levels by taking away one of the few outlets they may have to relieve stress."

Gates will review the new study to see if there are some things than can be done to work toward the goal of having a smoke-free force some day, Morrell said.

"Obviously, it's not our preference to have a force that is using tobacco products," he said, noting health concerns and the high cost of caring for health-related problems.

    ;)
