Dear Administration,

I know that progress and change are inevitable and I mustn't grumble. I usually don't. But this time I do have a complaint. My private right upper corner, you know, the one that says "Welcome, Katya", the one where I go first when I log on to see if there are new messages for me from my dear friends or strangers seeking help or advice, my little private corner with my settings and my profile, and my notifications has been invaded by three big, ugly, blinky buttons saying things like 'F connect', 'f like' followed by a changing number and '+1'. Not only do those things violate my private space, they blink and jump all over the place every time I refresh my page, giving me seizures.

I cannot not look there for obvious reasons. And every time I do look, my eyes get assaulted by those jumpy things I have zero interest in....

I do understand and accept the fact that the buttons needed to be added; I'm fine with that, what I'm objecting to, bitterly, is their placement. Do they really have to be in my little private corner? Is there a way to move them some place else? Even if it's just to the left corner of the page, where they can be grouped together for the benefit of those who have interest in them?

If that could be accomplished, I'd be very, very grateful, indeed...

I am having trouble with Google Translate on this one, they do not have an Assyrian button :D

Silverbear:
Of course it is for the children, that is included. That is why we must remove all flavors from our web pages in case they are marketed to children and become a gateway product to Fox News.

I like that, it's smooth and has good style.

However there is a problem with this: everything we add tends to push the page content down further and that is bad. With the buttons in the header, they don't take up more real estate, it's already there. But I agree the toolbar looks a whole lot better. Hmm.

How about make them a little smaller and put them in a line next to the search ecf with google button? It would be like the toolbar, but more compressed. Nothing but empty black space to the left of the google search button there on my page....

That would be nice. If they can make them smaller....

Smaller would be really nice. :D

If it's really bothersome, we can maybe sort out a usergroup that people can add themselves to that causes them to disappear.

There is still some work to be done following the update, so I can't promise that it'll happen soon.

Sorry for the annoyance - we just want to make sure that as many people are finding ECF as possible!

I have to say that this situation is 'fluid' at the moment. We needed to add the buttons but they may not be optimal just yet.

We'll revisit it later on to see what the score is. Some time living with it is generally the best way to figure out better options. For now, it is what it is - we have a ton of other projects for our tech guys to work on - sorry :(

Can I state here that I find the suggestion that your web browsing has slowed as a result of our buttons to be a little difficult to absorb. I'd start by deleting all cookies and cache, rebooting using a soft reset* not just a power-down, and seeing if that helped. Also get CCleaner and delete any Flash cookies (deep cookies placed in the computer, not the browser, by some sites).

* How to do a soft reset:
1. PC
Power down the PC.
Go to your router and remove the power cord.
Wait 10 seconds, then replace the router power cord.
Remove power plug from back of PC.
Hit the On button on the front 3 times.
Replace the power plug.
Boot up (it will probably do that automatically).

2. Laptop
Power down the laptop.
Go to your router and remove the power cord.
Wait 10 seconds then replace the router power cord.
Remove laptop PSU power cord.
Remove laptop battery pack. (This step is important.)
Hit the On button 3 times.
Replace battery pack and power cord.
Boot up.

This soft reset of the computer, plus the soft reset of the router, fixes some problems that are otherwise impossible to resolve. (A hard reset means scrubbing all the input parameters, which you don't want to do.)
