Keep in mind that even if your rebuttal isn't published, a well written piece can change the mind of an editor which is far more important than the ego stroking one gets when their letter is published in print.

I don't believe, at least in this instance, that wanting to see one's letter published is ego-stroking so much as wanting one's rebuttal of correct facts to be read by as many people as possible. Whether changing the mind of an editor is more important than broadcasting the truth to hundred? thousands? of readers is more important could be discussed ad infinitum, but not by me... :)
