Soooooo.....i was calmly sitting on my couch with my vamo along with an extra 18350 efest battery in my pocket when i felt something going superhot and almost burning my leg...I immediately thought it might be that the Samsung 18650 in my vamo had caught flames or something so i tossed it on the floor as well as everything in my pocket where i see the 18350 literally smoking as well as crackling and i was like =O and i literally kicked it with my square toe justins that are steel toe as well all the way outside....soooo point being anybody else had this happen to them? I still kinda feel the warm spot on my leg where it was burning and it happened over 30 mins ago.....

Yeah i was carrying like 1 quarter and like 5 pennies along with my vamo attached with the aerotank......but when i looked at it kinda sounded like it was punctured or something sizzling and such....which is wierd cuz no pointy objects in my pockets and like i said i was just calmly sitting in my couch not moving or anything when i thought i was on fire lmao....and i aint really worried about the battery just dont want it to happen to lets say my 18650s because that one that this happened to was just a replacement for while my batteries charged.

Also something to keep in mind when throwing ANY batteries away. Either take them somewhere to be recycled or put them in a plastic "thingy" before you put it in the garbage. This video was made by a guy that had his house catch fire from a simple 9 volt battery. Worth a watch! Kids and Character Fire Safety Introduction - video 1 - YouTube

Metal objects and batteries transported in a pocket aren't a good mix. The metal objects make contact with the positive end of the battery to complete the circuit. This causes the battery to over-discharge very quickly, causing what's called thermal runaway. Battery meltdown. The battery becomes extremely hot, producing hot gas which has to find a way out, so the battery caps are designed to allow the gas to escape. Called venting.

Had this been an ICR battery (protected), it could well have vented flames along with the hot gas and exploded. Lucky for you, this was a safe chemistry IMR battery. In the future, carry spare batteries in a plastic battery carrying case. http://rtdvapor.com/index.php/battery-cases.html

Trustfire2.jpg Protected ICR battery which vented flames and exploded in my mechanical mod.

I have seen 9V batteries do that to people when they have them in their pockets, word of advice if you have batteries in your pocket be sure to have a battery case. Glad you are safe!

at the absolute VERY least, you can tape the ends of the batteries while you wait for your cases to arrive in the mail. carry a roll of electrical tape and do a simple loop lengthwise, covering both the poles of the batt. i would do this even if i wasnt putting the batt in my pocket, just as a precaution. takes two seconds. better safe than sorry.

It "punctured" itself when the heat from the short caused it to explode and vent. There is no mystery here. Battery + "random metal objects" = playing Russian Roulette waiting to see if/when you are gonna short out that battery. You store loose batteries in secure plastic cases for a reason.

This is the best explanation. I figure the conductive metal you had in your pocket made contact with the battery ends and discharged/ shorted it past the point of safety and the extreme discharge caused the thermal runaway.
