I've got Kindle on my iPhone, and as an e-book junkie since 1998, I just LOVE it. I've been lucky, as a sci-fi reader, that Baen has such a great selection of e-books, but after 11 years, I'd just about worked through their entire library, and the last year or so pickings had been getting slim. Now, I'm loving having such a fantastic selection to pick from. my only problem is that I don't have data service here, and for some reason my wifi connection through my macbook stopped working last week. But I just need to find time to call the apple store and talk to a so-called "genius" about that.

Ditto, Misty. I just checked my e-mail and Amazon had sent me an advertisement for a Kindle, had to laugh as I'm totally interested again after reading this thread. I'm going to hold off until I see your review though. I need the larger print now, so I haven't been doing much reading, this would be great. Now to convince my hubby to buy it for me for Christmas, or my birthday.

Every time I read about the Kindle, ever since before it came out, all I can think is that 10 years from now our kids will have another reason to be lazy lol. New school requirement to buy your kid one when they start school and they get all of their schoolbooks downloaded to it at the beginning of each school year. No more reason to carry heavy backpacks. Would actually be kind of convenient though.

My eyesight has been so flaky since i started on insulin. It seems to change weekly. I would love to have a kindle because they say you can ajust the size of the letters. That's why i went to books on CD, I just can't read books anymore.
keep us posted on the light ajustment! Without that it would be no good to me.

If you really enjoy/prefer reading actual books I know they are a little harder to find but most books do have editions printed with much larger font for those with such a problem.

I'm a Kindle lover too. Hubby loves that he now buys me gift certificates for books instead of building me bookcases.

I'm too new to post links, but I'll send you a PM. There's a message board for Kindles. If you poke around on it, they always have a thread stickied for free books and bargain price books.

Leaford:) e-book reading since 1998?? where have I been all these years!?..
I've been reading e-books since my very first PDA, a Handspring Visor. I'm a compulsive reader, and can't stand to sit doing nothing, so always pull out a book when I have downtime, waiting in line, sitting on the bus, etc. I always used to have to carry around a paperback, or two if I was near the end of one. Now I can have a whole library in a shirt pocket.

Yes, but you are limited to Amazon's site for downloads. You can get freebies and pay ones, too. And it does store up to 1500 books, the one I got. There are enough free and super cheap ones to keep anyone busy for a very, very long time.

I have a kindle for PC, you can go there and download that for free and I only downloaded free books to that one. It's really fast, but I have FIOS internet. I did it so I could get a bit of an idea of what this kindle would be like.

You are not limited to Amazon's site for downloads.

You can download anything in a compatible format, or convert it to a compatible format and save it to the kindle from a computer.

Check out the calibre library program which will auto-convert things and send them to the Kindle.

I love my kindle!

OK, I just played with the Kindle. I used the wireless download and shopped at the Kindle store on Amazon.com for my book. I chose Jennie by Douglas Preston. It cost 6.99 as a download. I am happy with that price.

The Kindle is very intuitive and easy to use. However, I believe that searching for a book on the Kindle itself would be a pain in my unowhat. I chose the book I wanted by going to Amazon's website and getting the title first. Or I guess you could search with the kindle by author's name. But if you don't know what you want or the author's name, it might be a bit cumbersome to shop in the Kindle book store on the kindle, but you can do it.

The book downloaded very quickly. The font/print size can be adjusted for large print. It is very easy to read. You can either read it like a book you hold or you can change it to portrait viewing, sideways.

You can turn off the wireless connection to extend the battery life. You do not need to have wireless on to read your book. There is also sleep mode to save battery life.

It only took a short time to charge the Kindle out of the box.

To turn the page, there are buttons on either side of the Kindle. This is very convenient.

I haven't figured out how to delete anything as of yet. But I saw on their site, some people saying they had just added that feature to the Kindle. Can't imagine not being able to delete something, but there it is.

Overall, I love it, simple to use, easy to read and I can see me falling asleep with this thing every night.

I believe I will read a lot more because I own it. However, the books could be cheaper since there's no paper involved. It's not cheaper than a paperback here where I am, plus paperbacks can be found for pennies on the dollar. Kindle/Amazon compares the prices of hardback books to the price of kindle downloads and this is a bit ingenuous to someone like me who goes out of their way to save money on books and I hardly ever buy hardbacks. They are bulky and I like reading in bed, so I don't like them for that reason, too.

As for kids using them, I think this would be great if the textbooks were electronic, think of all the money it would save and the trees, too. Rather than the parents paying for the Kindles/or whatever ereader they used, the school could easily supply it if the books were cheaper. I remember carrying tons of books to and from school every day, I was an avid reader even in grade school, so I always lugged plenty of them. College textbooks electronically downloaded for students has the potential to save tons of money for college students, if things were done fairly, though I guess that's an industry all it's own.

I have a book shelf full ofbooks on tape..then the next shelf is books on CD Now I have an Ipod..grandson downloads books on it for me!
The nice thing about the I-pod is that I can take the books off and re-upload them if I want to hear them at a later date.

I like the larger print but not the larger books. I hope my sight settles down so I can get the right glasses for reading. I use drug store glasses for now in a light script. My eye doctor says I barely need them anyway (150)..it's just the little print that drives me nuts. I don't need them at all for anything else.

I got my Kindle today! Yippee! It's my Christmas present from hubby, an e-reader, in case you don't know what it is. I love this thing.

Anyone else here got one?

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannuka and Season's Greetings to all. Now it feels like the holidays are here.

Yeah, I opened it already, it came UPS and he was at work. :pI hope he doesn't want to wrap it up, I'm using it.

Oh, and I also got my order from V4L today, so puffing on my frappuccino while trolling for a good book to download. OK, that makes it a little more on-topic.

I am so bummed! I should have had my Frappuccino today too *pouts and curses dumb USPS!* So how is?

I was looking at those and the reviews were saying that it takes a long time to turn pages. Might want to check that out. I was days on the net checking out everything I could find on different e-readers. If I hadn't been seeing that, I would probably have chosen the Nook.

I was typing in kindle vs Nook, you can get a lot of comparisons of those two. I checked out the Sony one, also, the one I could afford, the screen was only 5" and that makes a big difference, so I didn't get that one, even though I found it about 80.00 cheaper at one place.
