Open Source Ecig Project

ya know what would be sweet? idk if this has ever been suggested before, or would even work out -the community here is so strong as such that I think it would actually be possible.

The Open Source ecig Project. A community built and supported mod or ecig or ecigs where from the very start it is built with input from the community. All plans are open source, any "code" changes are approved by the community. And finally when prototypes are ready, members of the community make a "donation" that buys them the prototype plus donates funds towards R&D, further production and also towards pushing against leguslations banning electronic cigarettes.

thats pretty much the jist of the whole thing. im sure there would have to be a more elaborate and thought-out plan in order to make it work. also people donating their time to production, design, etc. What do yas think?

I believe thats typically referred to as a co-op, and yes they've been attempted. Usually it seems to either A. get out of hand or B. loose support quickly.

I think its a grand theory, just doesn't seem to have hit the appropriate crowd yet.

I started a thread about this a few months ago. Had a few people like the idea but not enough to get anything started. Reason i wanted to get something going is it seemed to me a registered supplier was trolling this part of the forum and patenting other folks ideas. I am for sure down with open source hardware. But no one seemed interested enough to help me get a project off the ground. I know quite a few people have been posting there projects for everyone to use but really for it to be legally binding it should be done a certain way with a license agreement that can be read with the plans of the hardware.

My experience with software tells me that open source anything without immediate commercial incentive works best when 1 party does most of the initial work. That sets the direction, otherwise you're 'discussing' it ad nauseam....

This guy it trying so hard to sound smart and sophisticated using fancy schmancy wording, he "utilize"s PGVG or vasoline - why put vasoline in with stuff you're vaping?

Not saying he definitely stole someone else's idea or anything, I haven't been around long enough to know - this guy just sounds like an arrogant ........

True... I was just trying to put across how warm and fuzzy it would be to use making something ecig related to support the cause of ecigism. I guess it's like communism, sounds good on paper - just doesn't work.

what we need is scubadan, sturm and raidy to get together with someone with some cnc machines, and pump out some good ol american/polish/german engineered vaping goods

im sure theres a few more im missing, but theyre standing out right now

What I need me is some machinery and more time on my hands. And use my skills as an electrician to make some sick 120v mods. Skills being, no fear of electrocution when things go awry

Yeah I don't hate the idea, I wish it was workable, I'm absolutely wild about internet community information sharing and cooperative stuff, but look at Gummy's light bulb post. Trying to get a large group to agree on something is REALLY like that in practice, its not really a joke!

On further investigation open source hardware doesn't completely exist in a sense that you can protect a design. Looks like for example scubatdan should/could put a patent on his tank design. Or because he has so much of the work done on it can apply for "patent pending" for fairly cheap. Until later guess we have to live with the vultures stealing the ideas and designs of others.

Oh I already have several designs figured out and a few even board designs made and tested...Prob is like it has been said open source is no real protection without a patent...I have no problem sharing but I am insulted by greed and in some cases outright theft of designs. I guess in a perfect world...I have a vv PCB with connections for everything,meter, battery Vout to atty and more...all for the purpose of a solid mod regulator that will last and can be used in multiple mods with minimal footprint...I don't see a reason to put it out for someone to snatch it up and try to control all possible variations of it...I want the higher end models as my personal design if I become a supplier and the initial testing prototypes design is for everyone...I care not for riches I just need funds for other work...

I believe everyone has the right to make their own or coop a good mod...but I also believe anyone should have the right to protect THEIR WORK(not every thing) with a reasonable amount of surety......I know I have designed something grand...
