Is the wick supposed to be touching the bottom of the tank?

Best practice is just off the bottom. If it's well-oxidized it shouldn't be a problem but a lot of people still get shorts through the edges/frays, presumably because the oxidation can wear/flake off easier from the wire ends. Personally, I've never found it a problem to simply tilt a bit to get it to wick if the juice falls below the quarter of a millimeter gap bewteen the wick and the floor of the tank ;)

I would think it would be fine since it's used in aquariums and food service--but from what I can tell it would be subject to the same caveats as polycarbonate. It's easier to scratch than polycarb, though...
