cotton trick? Can you elaborate?

take some non perfumed cotton boll (you know what you use to take of your make-up ;-) ) and roll your wick gently in it, it will catch the cotton and make a thin layer that will prevent shorts, do it only where the wick touches the hole, that should be enough.

bluegrass or somebody has this idea

other method: cigarette paper around the wick where it goes inside the wickhole, just to see that you will not get any shorts then and that the issue IS oxidation

yet another one: pull the wick up, out of the hole and fire it, to see if you still have a short..

@ob: I have this "top coil" issues only when I drop my orion (Usually accidentally :D). I did abit of adjustments to the top coil (what emonty said: tighten m2 nut and what nots). I only have Orions only because I find that it works, and I don't need anymore mods (Or maybe because I have a budget to keep ) !

1 thing is for sure, me coming from a Gen Line, the orion sure is easy to setup!

I did the cig paper thing.

I will try putting a insulator in there and see how it goes.

I cannot imagine that the wicks are not oxidized. I blasted them, and burned juice and blasted again. If anything I have overoxidized them.

I do agree, when set up, the flavor is amazing. That is why I will not give up. I just dread it every time I have to set one up.

Ob, do your other gennis have isolated wick holes? Orion has more ss plate to go through than most. Oxidation is key. Maybe time to think about drilling and adding nylon shoulder washers?

some do, and some do not. I could add a nylon washer, but would like to avoid it if I can. They can be a pain.

Don't know what can be added, but so far I only built two coils on the Orion and both worked well right out of the gate. I did have to tweek some shorts later on but that's because I bumped the coil. My last one has been going for five weeks or better.

The only thing I did besides the quench three, burn liquid three is do the cig paper trick. I usually don't need it but have to say no nudging was required at all. But I think you tried that already... hang in there!

Lots of good suggestions here. If your sure your oxidized, try twisted coil. Much more robust. Also don't use a fresh batt when your setting up! :)

I got my .10 & .15 kanthal in. Fun weekend of play for me.

Do let us know which one you like best. From the other forum's thread on twisted coils; .10mm seems more mellow and .15mm looks like the winner.

My personal setup is 30mmx20mm 400 mesh, torch it till it glows before rolling, roll, 3x juice/burn with torch, clip bottom of wick at 45 degree angle, insert wick, 5 wraps of 30AWG Kanthal counter clockwise, wrapped clockwise at top post between washers, two threads showing, 3x juice/fire for 15 secs. If it pops at the top post, it's usually the mesh isn't oxidized well enough, is touching the bottom of the tank, or isn't wicking properly/not enough juice. The nylon shoulder insulators helps with all of that, but results in a thinner wick and subsequently less flavor IMHO. BTW, 30AWG is thicker and tougher to pop, but warms up slower, so a longer hit is required.

Don't bother with the cigarette paper, cotton, or nylon shoulder washer tricks, they're unnecessary. The orion has by far the longest unoxidized channel for the wick to run through, so what you should do is just pull your wick out, and give it hell with your torch and then do 3 or 4 good juice burns. When you actually wrap your coil, make sure that once you lock your wire in between the washers, tighten the nut down nice and firm. If you didn't already, I also suggest using scubabatdan's wick-building technique and folding the outer edge of your mesh over so no stray strands of wire stick out, which can often result in shorts. But to reiterate, you don't need to bother with any of the shortcuts or gimmicks to get your device up and running. It's all about a well built and thoroughly oxidized mesh wick.
I don't know why, but find my Orion the most difficult of my genesis devices to set up.

It takes forever and the top shorts and pops constantly.

I've used the cig paper trick and this does not really help either.

How do most of you do it? I mean how many wraps, which way do you wrap etc

When I get it set up its great, it's just rough.
