You may laugh, but it is coming. I recently read an article where some smoking nazi is claiming that the film of tars found on walls and interior surfaces of a smoker's home is a danger even worse than SHS. They're calling it Third hand smoke.

ACSH's Dr. Elizabeth Whelan comments on the report that SHS causes 600,000 deaths: Study’s secondhand smoke estimates overblown > Facts & Fears > ACSH

“Secondhand smoke rarely causes any kind of chronic disease, such as heart disease and cancer, although it can cause acute symptoms, especially in children, not to mention the aesthetic intrusions of the tobacco smoke,” she says.

I'll believe the BS about 3rd (and 4th - 99th) hand smoke as soon as they show us some epidemiologic data. In other words, where are the people who have been affected, and how did you rule out other possible contributing factors for their illness?

But for those who are concerned about the lingering film, here is some practical advice. http://www.doityourself.com/stry/homesomkeodor

Veering just a bit off-topic... I'm reminded of a friend of mine who lived in the South Pacific in the 1980s and was traveling to the U.S. back when smoking was still allowed on flights in excess of (wasn't it) four hours duration. It was her practice always to book flights that fell into this category. On one leg of her trip, at the last minute, it was announced that the routing of the flight had changed to include a stopover somewhere--making it a less than four-hour flight. My friend ignored the implications and lit up anyway and, when confronted by the attendant, refused to put her cigarette out and Made A Scene about having planned on and paid for a smoking flight. She was advised that she would not be permitted to re-board after the stopover and that the remainder of her ticket would be refunded. So she blithely went to another airline's counter and was able to book another (4+ hour, if I recall) flight. She told me the the ticket attendant she dealt with for the alternate flight was laughing along with her when she told the story.
