People think our Vaporizers could randomly explode?

Here is the biggest misconception I have heard from people about our devices. And I have heard it from several people, including one who claims his brother works at a hospital and treated someone who's hand got messed up from an exploding vaporizer.

I have heard that this only happens when someone who likes modding does something majorly wrong. But somehow word has gotten out there so people are cynical of e-cigs, PVs, etc... Thinking they have a chance of randomly exploding.

I know some people who smoke and are afraid to try vaping because they are afraid it could explode.

Has anyone else encountered people with this misconception? And what is the best thing to tell them? I have informed alot of them that some people who vape like to build and modify their own devices and that those are the cases where there could be an explosion, because they may have built something wrong.

Actually, it's not a misconception. Any device that uses lithium batteries, whether it be a cell phone, a laptop, or an ecig "can" go thermal and/or explode.

That is why there are so many posts, stickies and reminders here about using the best batteries, chargers, and practicing safe vaping, not leaving batts on charger overnight or when you are not home to monitor, not over discharging the battery, etc.

I'm sure there are hospitals who hae treated PV accidents that go unreported.

For the most part though, most newbie stuff like Joyetech ego twists etc. have excellent excellent protection cirucuitry. It is pretty hard to make one of those blow up etc. And many mods that have circuitry, i.e., VV, etc. are going to have reverse batt, low batt, short protection. Mecahnicals are a little trickier in that way

Let me see now... how many battery-operated devices do I actually have in my hand every day? Well.... cell phone, house wireless phone, car keys, remote control, mouse, diabetic monitor, magnifying glass light, old cell phone for alarms... oh, and my Egos and Erolls of course. I have never had a problem with any of them. Not all are lithium of course but included them because, being an old gal, I remember when they were feared too.

Don't lighters sometimes explode? Does that make the users of said lighters evil too?

I tell them if they really believe that, then they better get rid of their cellphone, it has the same battery, only bigger. And then they need to toss their laptop too, because it can have 8 or more of these batteries in it. There's only been a couple of real boneheads that I think actually tossed their cellphones and laptops.

The best way to kill that paranoia is to let people know that the exact same batteries are in their laptops... except that there's over 4 of them in there.

Ecigs are held up close to one's face.

Unlike my laptop which is about a foot or more away from me.

It's not paranoia at all.,it's called a "healthy respect" for lithium powered devices. Which all vapers should have.

I just had a ego usb/wall wart blow up in the kitchen socket. It blew up as soon as I plugged it in. That is my hand we are talking about.

That was my fault, as I did not "closely inspect" the charger, which I received in the ECF classies along with some ego batteries. It is very possible that the prongs got damaged in shipping, and/or the charger had a short somewhere.

My electrician inspected my wall outlet and there was no short there, so he look at the charger and said it had shorted. As you can see there was quite an "outburst" (sparks, smoke) and it threw the breakers in my house, and it was very scary having that in my hand when it blew, as I was plugging it in.

The bottom line is, no, things don't blow up often. But they do blow up. So its not at all paranoid, but *responsible* to practice safe ecig usage!

It's not about being evil or not evil, this is just reality. I am merely addressing this because the OP seemed bent on saying this is a misconception, that things that are ecig related can blow up, and my point is that ANYTHING can blow up, chargers or lithim batteries, if not treated with the respect, care and examination they deserve.

By not stressing this, there are newbies at risk, who have not read up at Battery University, etc. and everyone who vapes NEEEDS to understand a little about chargers, batteries, etc.

this is precisely why it really bothers me when people come in and use scare tactics and over emphasize the dangers in a counterproductive manner. It gives vaping a bad wrap and does way more harm than good. Yes there are "dangers" as with any battery operated device but vaping itself is not "dangerous".

its better to educate people on proper usage and safety precautions than to say "OMG ITS DANGEROUS IT WILL BLOW UP". Majority of forums readers do not read past the first 3 sentences and/or the first paragraph. So for the few people that actually read a long post on how this and that will explode the literally 1000s of people browsing will go tell all their friends how vaping is bad and they saw crazy pictures of exploded devices.

that being said. i just ate popa johns pizza and it was good.

I did not mean it's paranoid to think batteries explode. I meant it's paranoid to think that only ecigs explode. The ecig might be by your face, but a laptop is still close to you or even worse, on your lap in an airplane. The difference between the distances is also negated by the fact that laptops have in upwards of 8 lithium ion batteries. The same 18650s that we use in our devices.

Everyone should treat ALL batteries with respect. It is in my opinion paranoid to think that this is restricted to ecigs. If you are avoiding ecigs for this reason, but happily putting a laptop on your body and a cell phone to your ear, you are paranoid about ecigs.

I completely agree with you that people should be well aware of the dangers of these batteries. It's been a bit of a peeve of mine in terms of technology. We have all these advancing pieces of technology, yet we are still running them on these dangerous power sources. They aren't even efficient enough to keep up with the tech either. You're lucky if a smartphone lasts you an entire day. Laptops requiring 8 18650 batteries to run for a couple of hours.

Seriously though, imagine a laptop bursting into flames on an airplane. I'm personally more scared of a laptop than an ecig. Safe chem batteries will mostly heat up and catch fire at worst. A laptop does the same, but much worse happens due to the number of batteries and the surrounding components. Those things become flame throwers D:

I'm a big proponent of safe battery handling. Every time I see a Facebook picture of someone shoving their batteries in the same case as their metal tools, I warn them and tell them they better consider putting those batts in their own protective case. I mean come on, a battery case costs less than a dollar.
