Are you referring to using a piece of silica inside of the mesh, or wrapping the mesh with a piece of silica?
I mean about putting the ss wick inside of a silica sleeve, so the ss doesnt really need to be oxidized

I haven't done it. Not really sure why I would.
Please explain the benefit.
The idea is to not use silica at all...
gatag, I've done something similar where cotton thread was wrapped around the mesh wick. It vaped nicely and didn't have to worry about hotspots, but it didn't have the same flavor as the mesh by itself and didn't wick quite as well as cotton or silica would by itself. Some people still swear by their cotton/silica/whatever-wrapped wicks, but in my experience it's just more effort than benefits. YMMV
Yes, if I do close the thread which I might not, it will still be readable and I will re-open as soon as both contests are done.
I'm also hoping that I can twist AlmightyGod's arm to allow us to use his how to video on the site.
And if I twist really hard maybe he will write up a step by step tutorial for our site as well with only the most basic tips and tricks included for those of us, including myself, who do not want to tinker and just want to get our cobras (or other rba's) up and running. I know the forum is a wonderful for information and this thread alone has had a ton of it. But sometimes it is hard to weed through the questions and answers that do not apply to our situation and the other chatter. And it seems that AlmightyGod is truly AlmightyGod on this subjectI'd be happy to repay the time spent with an awesome sandblasted cobra tank

Almightygod, i can't wait to see your tutorial for the Cobra. I get a nasty taste and i have tried different coils, different wicks, i even took it apart and cleaned it but I just haven't found the right combo. The funny thing is I built my first coil & wick using the wire & 400 mesh that came with the atty & i was getting good flavor & decent vapor. I then tried some 316 SS 300 mesh from Mcmaster-Carr and that is when i started getting the bad, burnt plastic taste. I read that a bad taste can come from your wick not being oxidized enough, so I re torched it till it was all black & that didn't work. I also noticed 50/50 blends tasted worse than 100% vg juices that I have. Currently I have a 300 mesh coil that came with the cobra with 30 gage kanthal, 7/6 wrap @ 1.6 Ohms. Smoketech Telescope in 18350 stealth mode and my VMax @ 3.0 volts taste pretty much the same, more vapor but less taste. (vaping ecto plasma 100%Vg) Would using a kick/ lower watts help? It smells like I'm burning juice & maybe I need to vape at lower watts. Anyome care to chime in or have a proven cobra setup on a mechanical mod please post.
Yeah moo....he gave up a very nice setup. Not getting a single dry. And damn it I had a very good wick even before this.. He definitely trumped MY experience by far.

I'm thinking you have a hot spot, or poor wicking. I've not purchased mesh from MMC, so I'm not sure if it's suitable for a genesis or not. I do know that 325 mesh doesn't wick very quickly compared to 400 or 500. It can also have a harsh taste. I don't care for the 325 at all.

OK now that us RBA newbs have that wonderful video I think we also need a chart on what wire and mesh to use for what! Something that tells us what gauge and how many wraps to use to accomplish X amount of ohms. I'd also like to know what the benefits and uses are for the different mesh, for example why would I use 400 over 500 or the other way around.
That would be very useful especially since I try all different gauge wire and come up with all different ohms and don't remember what gauge or number of wraps I did to get a half way decent vape.
The problem I'm having now isn't shorts, hotspots or wicking but coughing on every drag. I'm not sure genesis is for me. I never cough with cartos or with my cotton wicks in my Penelope. It's weird.
