Same keychain pill container I used before here
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/battery-mods/37377-solderless-battery-mod.html

The container
DealExtreme: $2.61 Aluminium Alloy Pill Shaped Keychain

And same 18500 battery.

Moved the button from the bottom to the top

Unfortunately same cellphone camera also. Sorry.
I had less than 1/2" to work with on the inside so I made a drop in
"two penny switch".It drops in in 3 pieces.

Switch parts list:
Two pennies :D
Machine screw
Nylon machine screw with nylon nut
Two pieces spring steel strip (salvaged from a cheap tape measure)
Nylon tube/spacer
And the part the keychain attaches to used as the button.

Unlike most reviewers I have normal sized hands and can easily cover it in my fist.

Plus if you are already making a fist with something that looks like a roll of quarters people are less likely to give you a hard time while in public

I have nothing against solder, wires or storebought switches.I did not think I could have used them on this.

One penny is still spendable.heh

Just guessing here but I think the first penny sits on top of the batt (on the + side).

The second penny is connected to the offset button with the nylon screw/nut.

The two are then separated by 1 of the springs and nylon spacer.

When you press down the button (and one of the pennies) it touches and thus connects to the second penny and the + side of the batt.

How'd I do Guy?

Excellent Nubee!
I should also point out that neither pennies move.Only the spring between the two_One penny has a big hole on the edge for the Nylon machine screw to pass through it.

Hey Guy,

I really would love to do this battery mod. I have no experience whatsoever in modding, but would like to start off with this simple and perfect design. Would you kindly do step-by-step (with clearer pictures) especially in regards to the penny switch? GREAT WORK!

Thank you EZ

I'll see what I can do for ya

Thanks Guy!

I don't seem to be able to upload pics anymore. I have read others having this problem also. Must be new server thing maybe?

Chucky- If you don't mind the switch at the other end you might take a look at the solderless battery mod (link at the top of this page) which is much much easier and goes into detail on page 3 or 4

Some Guy, check out ImageShack. It's a free image hosting site. Easy to use and works great. No need to even register. Simply upload a pic, and copy the link it generates, then paste the link on the forum. It's that simple.

ImageShack® - Image Hosting

Ok I gave it a shot.
How long does image shack store pics without regestering? Do I need too?

Operates a lot like an old telegraph. I don't see it wearing out in the near future.
Clear epoxy coating around edge of penny for insulation is hard to see in pic.
Also not shown is epoxy putty the bottom penny rests on inside the mod.Which is slightly below the point on the atty connector.
The atty connector makes contact in the middle of the bottom penny between the threads sticking out and the button.

Probably way more trouble than it's worth but that is where I wanted the button and I'm stubborn lol.

Hope that helps some. Don't hesitate to ask if not.

@ Some Guy ~

great basic switch design (well, the whole thing, really!). i like it. i've been fiddling with the tape measure steel myself for a bit and see potencial for a variety of switch designs.

cheers!

Thanks Tinear
The stuff is a bit tough to drill through (for me).
Although I did make another version on a different mod without the angle that went quicker. It is still time consuming.
I hope you can come up with an easier one.

Cheers back!

Some Guy. I can't say for sure how long Image Shack stores pictures, but I've posted pics on other forums and they're still there more then 3 years later.

After you upload the picture, instead of using the direct link, scroll down the page and you'll see "forum links". Just copy the forum link url, then paste it here, and the actual picture will show up here, instead of just a link.

Is there anyway you can get some better pics. If not, no problem, but it's just so creative, I really wanted a better look at it. Those were out of focus a bit, and kind of hard to see what you did. :)

yeah, tempered steel is like that. i use a diamond burr bit cooled with a drop of antifreeze for boring and shaping, though rough cutting with snips is a breeze.
if you get it too hot it will lose it's temper........... and before anyone jumps on it ~ no, i don't mean P'd off.:D

t'ain't nuttin' eazy 'bout makin' sumtin' from nuttin' til' sum'un else dun did do it first.

you can quote me on that.;)

Yeah Tinear the temper did cross my mind since I was using a worn dremel bit. But that soon passed because I was using my fingers as a clamp/heat sink lol. And could not keep at it too long.

EZ maybe if I try and describe what is there it may help you see it.
The aluminum button (that came off the end of the pill box) is drilled and tapped to take a nylon machine screw. The head of the nylon machine screw is between two spring steel strips (from a steel tape). The paint on the steel strips is removed in spots where it makes electrical connections. That is probably why it looks confusing. They are both the same. One is just there to keep the button from falling out and add more spring. The one that has paint scraped off makes the electrical connection from one penny to the other when the button is pushed. That is the positive side (of the batt). Because the shell of the pill box is the negative side is why the nylon screw. To insulate the aluminum button from the springs.
The blurry white areas: Like I said the head of the nylon machine screw is between the springs. Then on the other side of one spring is a nylon hex nut that is rounded off and a few nylon washers. Looks like all one piece. Then the aluminum button. The hole in it came that way for a keychain.
There is a brass machine screw threaded into the penny to hold the springs.

I hope I did not make it even more confusing with all that. I can go on if wanted.
