Hello all, my name is Bob & I'm coming up on age 62. I've been smoking since I'm 13yoa. In my 30's & 40's I was up to about 2-2.5 packs a day. I'm down to 1 pack a day for the last couple of years but can't get away completely. I've got an ICD for my heart and COPD. I don't know whats wrong with my head. I've tried hypnosis, nicrotrol & pills from the DR. so this for me is a must.
I've been reading here for about 8 hrs.since yesterday & I'm more confused than ever. I think I've narrowed it down to either a DSE 108 OR a 510 Dura/Titan/Yeti. I want something that comes with a PCC if possible, able to refill from a juice bottle. I also need to know what accessories to buy along with my initial purchase,IE:extra batteries, juice etc. I wan't to have enough to last me at least 30-45 days without running out so I can not be tempted to touch an analog as you call it. As for the two I listed above I do not know who makes them or where to buy.
If any of you have a better suggestion please let me know. Your help is truly appreciated. Thanks,Bob

Welcome Bob. This is a great place to be. While you wait for a recommendation you might look through the ECF suppliers list and check out the discount codes that might help with your initial purchase. What specific features of the 501 and the DSE that you like?

I used to think something was wrong with my mind as well, found out it was just normal. Hang in there and keep coming back.

Hi Bob and welcome to ECF. It looks like you've done some homework so you're a bit ahead of the game. For anyone over about 1/2 pack a day those smaller batteries probably just aren't going to cut it. A PCC will help, but it's still frustrating having to charge batteries all day. The DSE 801 and 510 models are good for people who don't smoke much. I'd suggest you look at something with a bigger battery such as an eGo or Riva. They have triple the battery power or more so they go a long time between charges. They can also be refilled with bottled juice making it less expensive.
As far as what to buy:
Starter kit
Extra battery
Extra atomizer or 2, or 2 boxes of cartomizers
At least 90 ml of juice to last 30-45 days, get different flavors and strengths
A drip tip (since they're cheap)

That would get you going and keep you going for a while. Check out the eGo and Riva reviews here in the model specific forum. The place to buy them right now is Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510. For $29.99 plus shipping you can get a starter kit if you use the discount code they provide on the tab at the top of their page. They also have everything else listed so it would be a one stop shop for you at the best price going.

Hi Bob -- just wanted to say welcome and kudos to you Bob for trying out this alternative device. It sounds like you are ready -- jump in Bob, the water is fine :) As a newbie, I went with the cigarette looking models. In hindsight, and several new models later, I realized it's not important that it look like a cigarette. In fact, I prefer stainless steel with any other color led light to the brown filter/white battery with orange/red led light!

Now, I know it may have taken you some time to make your choices, and they are good choices -- they will get you up and running for sure -- but CSKent makes great points.

In the meantime, we'll scooch over and save a seat for you :) Sending a friendship request because I want to know how it goes :)

Best, ..V... <----Peace/V sign :)

Hi Bob,
Welcome to ECF. I am about the same age as you and started down this road in April. I spent a ton of money and time and feel that it is the best thing I have ever done for my health. Ever. To me the key to a successful transition is to get a setup as close to the feel of a cigarette as possible. From my experience here is what I would do.

1. I would buy an Infinity from Notcigs.com. with a 510 connection. It has a long battery life and it is a variable voltage device. It has a wheel dial that will allow you to adjust the voltage or intensity of the flavor and throat hit of the eliquid. There are very few units that will do this and to me it's vital. I have dealt with this company since June and can assure you that they are top notch. Cost about $100.00 for the kit (the unit, batteries and charger). Also get an extra set of batteries so that you will never have a down time. Sure there are cheaper kits but if you are like me you are going to end up here anyway and if you don’t like it you will be able to sell it very quickly on the ECF classifieds.
2. Buy 2 or 3 boxes of 510 Cartomizers from Madvapes.com. Get the ones with silver threads. Cost about $9 a box. They also have passthroughs. Be sure to get a 5 volt one. They are a full service supply and are again top notch. I have dealt with them since April.
3. To me the hardest thing in transition was finding an eliquid that you like. The faster you find one the better. If you can settle on one you will better off than most folks. Go to Wordupecig.com and you can buy sample bottles of eliquid. I think it’s about $20 for 5 bottles. The selection is great and they have free shipping. Again top notch. Dealing with them since April.

That should give you a pretty good start for about $150.00. I wish you the best of luck and if you need anything else shoot me a PM.

Hey Bob. I am in the same boat with you, but i'm only 61 yrs. old. I have the copd, heart attack, a few strokes and think vaping will be my answer too. But, like you, there is too much info. I generally overanalyze until I make a mistake. Read my post - I just put up and copy; and email your "please help me" to vicki at cignot dot com. I did and she was/is very helpful. Even told me which of the things she sells that are no good! - blinddriver

After alot of research I chose to order from Liberty-Flights 20% off your whole order!
The link will take you there and give you 20% off your entire purchase. I went with the Riva 510 as well as a Joye 510. The Riva produces large amounts of vapor which for me was a bit hard to adjust to (just 2 days using it now). The battery lasts all day which is why I decided to go with it because I am away from home driving most of the day in my job. The joye 510 batteries don't last as long but I decided to get that one to use at home for dripping. I tried the dripping method today and for me, starting out, this is working very well since it doesn't seem to be so much vapor while I adjust to vaping.
I purchase a Riva, Joye510, 7 juices and 2 extra boxes of Boge carts for right around 100.00. If you smoke it doesnt take long to do the math, not to mention the health benefits. Hope that helps.

I agree with cskent. I kicked a 40 year pad Kool habit, and NEVER even thought I could. If you go with the Riva 510 kit (a great buy) get some Boge 510 2ohm cartomizers from the same place (7.99/pack of 5). It does make the whole thing much easier, and the 2ohm cartos deliver a decent throat hit on the Riva.

Hi! Do you mean DSE801 - penstyle? I haven't vaped one but if the hit is anything like the DSE901 then it's a somewhat airy and cool but vapory tasty hit. The 510 is probably a hotter denser hit but some new users have trouble with occasionally melting their carts - try to get a Joye brand (original manufacturer) or at least a 510 someone vouches for as being good quality because there a some substandard 510 clone parts around - you want a correct fit of the cart around the atomizer.

The standard battery (180mah) on either of those is not going to last long - maybe 2-3 hours depending on how much you vape. But I believe there are longer batteries available for both (280mah batteries) so you could use those too.

Popular here are the fat battery versions of 510 and DSE901 with batteries that last 6-8 hours (for 510 that's Ego or Riva 510 and others, for 901 it's Riva 901) - they have enough power to support bigger hit low resistance atomizers.

I think adapters can probably be found between many combinations of 510, DSE901, DSE801, and cartomizer model KR808D-1 (aka 808) so there is some flexibility no matter which you get.

Normally we recommend manual batteries for the best control of your hit and so you don't have to drag extra to warm up the atomizer. However, I know manual DSE901 batteries do not fit in their cigarette-pack-look PCCs (though you could use a flat case KR808D-1 PCC). I do not know if DSE801 manual batteries work in DSE801 PCCs nor if there is another brand's PCC that would work with the manuals. So if you are interested in a PCC for DSE801, check first if one exists that works with manuals batteries.

Welcome Bob. I see you have some recomendations on hardware so I will just give some advice. Be patient and try not to get frustrated. Stick with it and read and post to this forum every day. It's like AA for smokers. It helped me quit the cigs. Good luck abd congratulations on your first steps to being smoke free!!

+1 from me Bob. Be patient with the very small leaning curve and come here every day. The support here is worth its weight in gold and very shortly you will be helping others.

Welcome aboard Bob :)
I smoked about 45 years myself and never really thought I'd stop. I made a few costly mistakes finding my way here but it's been pretty easy since. The support here is great. All the people here will help out. Don't be too hard on yourself, just being here is a giant step in the right direction. My first real E-cig was a KR808 and I finally got an Ego with an extra battery. It works great for me. I have several different juice flavors but only a couple I really like. You'll have to find what works for you.
I wish you all the best
Hang in there
Richard

Thanks to you all for your assistance, it has been very helpfull. I think I'm going to start with the Riva. I'm still not sure about one thing - the difference between an atomizer & a cartomizer. Are they interchangable? Can you refill them both? Do you need both? I'm gonna go along with CSKENT's suggestion and get extra battery, some atomizers, juice, & a drip tip(even though I don't know what a drip tip is for). Also, is there anything special I need to refill the cartridges. You guys are the best. It's nice of you all to be giving your time & experience to "the new guys" it is truly appreciated. Bob.
I've got so much going through my mind right now I forgot to ask, what do I need to be able to charge the batteries in a car?.

The atomizer uses a cartridge which has filler in it and holds the juice. This makes you e-cig a three piece unit. A cartomizer is the atomizer and cartridge in one single piece. This makes a 2-piece unit. Both can be refilled very easily, and as long as you get the ones made for the 510 you'll be able to use them with your Riva. I would suggest getting both to see which you prefer.

A drip tip is used when you drip and replaces the cartridge. Dripping is very easy and only requires the use of the drip tip and an atomizer. You put the drip tip on the atomizer and drip your juice in the atomizer through the drip tip. You start by putting three drops in the atomizer and vape until the flavor changes and vapor production drops off, then you add two more drops. It might sound complicated and it does take a little practice, but it's really very easy.

Welcome aboard! You'll love your Riva!

OK everyone, this is what I ordered, probably slightly overboard but once I start I don't want to stop because I forgot something. The only thing I still need is a charger for the car. If I forgot anything please let me know. Bob.

I too am in my 60's, smoked for 45 years. My wife has COPD and had smoked for 40+_ years. We switched to e cigs 1 1\2 yrs. ago and never went back to regular cigarettes. My wife had ended up in the hospital and we had to quit! She can use the e cigs without any problem. I have my health back thanks to them! I've tried a few different brands and types. I searched the industry extensively and have finally found a great supplier. Low cost, quality products and the best customer service! Also great taste and the best vapor in the country. The supplier is Vapor 4 Life. Give them a try, I've found them to be the best. Also, yes, they do have PCC's and every other accessory you can imagine. the carts are refillable and they have the best juice I've found. No, I don't own stock in them, (wish I did!), I just have found them to be the best!! Good Luck and Best Wishes!
