Any veterinarians or vet techs here?
My dog is very upset by the fireworks that are popping more and more frequently and becoming louder/bigger.
He seems to be getting worse with age.
I SHOULD have spoken to his vet beforehand about some sedatives, for his comfort, but I did not.
What can I do for him?

according to the dog whisperer babying them only promotes the behavior. I usually just let the dog get scared and hide, they'll come out afterwords. I do know some dogs get really really bad and don't even recover the next day and need sedatives. Honestly there isn't much you can do for it if you don't have sedatives as far as I know.

I know it's kinda late in the game for this advice, at least for this holiday. But, some of my thunderstorm, and yes, fireworks recordings are bought by people with nervous dogs who use them to get their pets accustomed to the sounds. I hear this technique has some success. Doesn't need to be window rattlingly loud. Not promoting my product, just saying ... I'm not the only source.

Bach's Flower Essences - Rescue Remedy - works wonders. Just put a few drops in his water. It is safe for anybody, human or canine. You should be able to pick it up at a healthy food store and some drug stores carry it.

One of my cats clings to the porcelan in the bathroom when hiding from noise. I have music I turn on in there for him. He goes there for fireworks, t-storms and "hiss monsters". (hot air balloons). Odd how they go to the most supported part of the house, amazing survival instincts.

I feel so sorry for all the dogs. I have numerous neighbors that set off fireworks starting the day before July, so this evening will be bad. It is strictly against the law where I live and I have no idea how they get away with it year after year. They endanger themselves, other peoples homes and upset the dogs!!!
Go 5 miles over the speed limit and the cops will be all over you. Set off dangerous fireworks and nothing happens :grr:
They have scheduled firework dispalys thru out the city but they do not go to those instead they stay at home and do there own.

if you have valium give that to the dog.. or benadryl 1mg per lb.. turn up the tv to drown out the fireworks.. and keep it busy playing with something

That's what we are doing right now---except the playing.
Gave her the Valium about an hour ago and she is sleeping away.

My problem, she quakes from the inside from T-storms too.

I live in Detroit. Its been bad all week, but this weekend sounds like this is a war zone. And I have one very bad dog. He barks at the noise, looks out the window, and wants to attack all the flashes. Outside too, he scans the horizon. He gets my other Cattle Dog to do it too. I just don't understand how people can afford to do fireworks. LOL, and its illegal here in Michigan.
