atty, just went back to j0ker's link - it used to read "prevets is having a contest" jj must have changed that already

It was changed way back when the majority wanted to separate the contest to lower the tension the contest was causing. Yes I want the contest protected but I wanted PreVet to survive.

atty - this contest was supposed to be run through pvt - that's why you were on the committee.
there shouldn't be any changes unless we agree to them
I bowed out when they said "no changes".

What was the point of this post? I don't want to play sour-grapes here. I just need to go get some chores done. I'll BBL.

i was talking about your participation back in january! ;)

as to the changes having been made back in april already - apparently they had no effect. nobody started a welcome thread for an incoming vet but us.

in his post joker made it clear he helped arrange the contest for pvt and considers it to be a pvt affair till the end of the year.

lol.

I need a break. I'll be back later. You guys kick it around for a while. We need West Coast input too (like Nat)...there's time. No rushing. I'm going to get some chores done.

I've kept quiet because I was MIA when the contest started. It's all very confusing to me.

Personally, and I have no idea if it can be done, but I wouldn't tie any part of contest to whether they show up for their fireworks at the given time.
Late night turners very rarely show up at the correct time, if they show at all.

It should be as simple as possible.

I think entering through their particular Welcome Thread, via the correct forum should suffice for entry.
As I said, I don't know if that's possible, but it is simple.

ETA: I prefer when they want to party with us for fun, not for the contest.

I'm back. I don't know why. ;)

I think it's some form of either:
A) Positive feelings... for the whole PVT thing and/or the people here.
B) Some light form of masochistic personality disorder

OK. So I'm back regardless. Now.....we continue to gather input.

My personal vote/input is to NOT tie any part of the contest (including Grand Prize) into the avatar parties. If we choose to do so, we have to be more open about time changes and the "window" of acceptable participation. It's confusing enough for us to get the times strait and staff the fireworks, let alone explain it all to the pre-vets. Confusion = problems for contest.

I think we can tie it to the pre-vets thread, just not avatar parties.

With PVT they still have 3 options:
1) Welcome thread only
2) Welcome thread with theme (and maybe a few pics posted outside welcome thread)
3) Welcome thread with theme and avatar party/picture postings, scheduled fireworks.

#1 comes with 2 and 3. So tied to #1 it's still a pre-vet thread thing, but not a "timing issue".

Others may disagree. IDK what the VENDORS think either. Or what the perceived, or actual, promises have been. That's were I think we need input from a "neutral" party that aware of the contest. What do they perceive the contest to be NOW (not what do they think it should be, but what was the understanding of it, if any.)

ok - let me backpedal one more time and try to refresh your memories

the reason jj came up with the contest was, i believe, to encourage participation in pvt. we did not have all that many to come for the celebrations ....... sigh
then, as it sometimes happens, we were mobbed - lesson learned

we are now at the point where we need to find a happy medium. you might not want to hear this but for most it is the contest that brings them in. not having any requirements attached we are facing just being a one-time stop on the way to an entry.

i don't see anything wrong with using the tools available to us to change that. and for most who celebrated with us it turned into a very pleasant experience even if they sort of had their arm twisted to begin with.

zero, i believe, stopped by because of the contest and is now a believer.

I don't have a serious problem with that Tibby. But I don't want to tie it to Avatar Parties and specific timings.

if there are no ties you'll have the majority of the people stopping in once and that's it - we'll be the processor of welcome threads and not much more .....

Atty, as i might have mentioned before, i agree with you. I'd prefer to have the contest linked only to welcome threads (with the specifics that there seem to be some agreement about), not avatar party's but i can live with the avi party requirement if that's what the majority of people want, and we have that added flexibility. (edit to acknowledge the point that Tibs made while i was typing- it's a good one)

My guess is that the vendors know little and care less about the specifics of how it's tied to PVT, as long as we keep the monthly and grand prizes as stated in the original contest thread (below)...The differential eligibility for monthly and grand is outside of that- and I'd guess that the vendors would be happiest with whatever gives them the most visibility, but i could be wrong about that. . (BTW i was wrong in my earlier attempt to summarize about deciding whether to keep a two-tiered contest of- i probably really meant differential eligibility for monthly vs grand prizes).

MONTHLY - Each month there will be one lucky winner chosen using Random.org from all members whom have submitted to date. You must have acquired veteran status in 2012 to be eligible. At the bottom the packages are listed for each month. The winner for the monthly will be determined and announced on the 1st of it's following month. For example, January's monthly winner will be posted on February 1st. Just to note, winning a monthly packages does NOT render you ineligible for the Grand Prize giveaways but as stated in the rules above, one monthly prize per member. Winning a monthly in the Veteran 2012 contest, would prevent you from winning in other ECF ran contest within 30 days, as stated in the rules.

Excerpt from rules - "e. No Member may win more than one (1) Contest within a thirty (30) day period or one calendar month unless the value of one prize is less than $20. No Member may win more than two (2) prizes within any sixty (60) day period or two calendar months."

GRAND PRIZE - For the Grand Prize day, the winners will be chosen after everyone is cleared from our schedule list for 2012 and chosen by RANDOM.ORG - True Random Number Service . Throughout the year, the Grand Prize coffer will be filling and in December, the total of items will be broken into prize groups. How many groups can only be determined once we know all the prizes. So watch the list at the bottom of the post grow .

Am I Eligible?

1. Will I become a vet in 2012? (requires 1 year membership and over 75 post)
Yes, proceed to step 2
No, you're ineligible

2. No more than 60 days before becoming a vet, follow these instructions. Link

3. Once you have a welcome thread, locate your thread, copy the URL to the thread. Post link in Veteran 2012 Contest Submission

4. Make note of the post number in upper right hand corner of your post. This number is your entry number for the contest.

5. You are done, sit back and hope your post number is displayed at Random.org

In terms of wanting unbiased opinions, i think that MarkFM and Morri's comments have been really helpful, because they both have different experiences of the contest and PVT- and are working to understand and support both.
