Protank 2 and burnt taste. What's happening...?

Hello all! I'm a relatively new vaper (6 months), so I apologize if this question is basic or often addressed...

I've tried a number of tanks and clearos, including two Protank 2s, and I've had nothing but great luck with them until now. Both Protanks came with two replacement coils (each), so I haven't had to break into the separate replacement coils that I ordered until now. The problem that I'm running into is that the new coils constantly give off a sort of burnt taste... not completely dry hits, just AWFUL flavour. They're exactly the same coils as the last ones, as far as I can tell (same ohms, etc.) I've experimented with various voltages and wattages, tested multiple coils in each tank (to make sure it wasn't the fault of a particular one), and I've left the tanks full of juice for a few days to see if the wicks just needed extra time to absorb juice. Still the same problem. Is there something obvious that I don't know that might fix this? Is this a problem that anyone else has run into or is it just me? Thanks so much for your time and any advice you might have!

Cheers!

I recommend adding an AFC base to improve airflow in your PT2. Any of the three versions below will work:

Kanger Air Flow control Valve Base Replacements

Other than that:

Kanger Troubleshooting 101:

If your clearo is flooding, the connections are not tight enough--or too tight. Keep reading.

If you're using clearos and getting a burnt taste it means that not enough juice is getting to the coil and you're basically vaping dry, hot air or inhaling smoke from the gunk that's burning off of your coil. Not a good thing. Another case of bad taste maybe the tank itself--some arrive covered with some kind of nasty grease; wash them with soap and water (just the tanks--soak the coils in PGA or vodka).

There are a few things you need to remember when using a T3 or an eVod or a ProTank--in addition to keeping your coils clean and free of gunk that accumulates on them.

1) Make sure that the atomizer coil is screwed into the base tightly--every time you refill; they often come not fully tightened from the manufacturer, or may have gotten loose through repeated refills.

2) Look at all the inner seals and gaskets to make sure they haven't become dislodged.

3) Make sure that you screw the tank into its base tightly. If it's not tight, it will leak.

4) When you screw your clearomizer into your battery, do not overtighten--screw it in only until it makes contact--no farther, or you may push the center post in too deep and cause all kinds of problems, including leaking. When the draw becomes tight or the taste and vapor production begin to diminish, replace the coil. This will happen sooner (even as soon as one day of heavy use) if you're using dark, viscous, or very sweet juices. The old coil can be cleaned and dry burned.

5) Make sure you're not getting any juice in the center tube when you're filling--this will cause your eVod to leak like a sieve. If some juice gets into the tube, close the top cap, place a tissue under your tank and blow gently through the clearomizer to get rid of any excess eliquid. Also, extra condensation inside the tank may, on some occasions, drip back into the center tube. Wipe your mouthpiece dry with a q-tip or a tissue when you refill (or more often when/if needed).

6) Take an occasional "primer puff" (a slow draw without activating the battery) when you vape. It helps move the juice into the coil chamber and removes any air bubbles that sometimes form in the tank and may cause gurgling or impede proper wicking.

7) New clearomizers (Aerotanks etc.) come with a clever airflow adjustment base--make sure you adjust the settings to your liking.

8) Take slow long draws rather than sharp and quick ones like we used to do while smoking cigarettes. Do not over vape, chain vape, power vape. Let the juice travel to the coil between drags.

9) Do not remove any flavor wicks if you're experiencing any leaking or flooding. Those wicks are there for a reason. If you feel that you have to remove a wick because your eliquid is particularly thick, do it carefully--one strand at a time. If your liquid is super thin, you can thicken it with a bit of VG (USP--pharma grade) or you can add another strand of cotton to your flavor wick. Don't add too much or you'll choke your atomizer and get a dry hit.

and last but not least:

10) Keep the coils and wicks clean (search ECF or YouTube for detailed coil cleaning instructions). Discard when when flavor and vapor start to diminish. Those coils are disposable.

Also, make sure you're vaping at correct wattages; Kanger recommends 5.5-7.5 watts for single coils. Dual coils require a bit more wattage than single coils--I like 9-11 watts for duals. They also benefit from increased airflow.

Thanks Katya for the in depth response! I will test some of these things out. In response to your suggestion about the air flow control valve: I do have one already, and you're right! I didn't think to mention it in my original post, but the tank with the control valve base works fine! If all else fails, maybe I will just purchase a couple more.

Cheers!

I love the new SOCC coils for my Mini Pro Tank 2's the flavor is just 10 times better then Silica and very easy to rewick them instead of just tossing coils. (I never did get dry hits with Silica under 7 watts but the Organic Cotton a lot better taste) Just gently pull old wick out then rinse just the coil and dry burn. Then rewick the coil with a new piece of organic cotton. I did this even with the silica ones. Toss those flavor wicks and pull the silica out! Use cotton!
Heres link to how to rewick explains it very good

I'm vaping at higher watts then the 7 watts now with the SOCC coils. Using 9 watts on 1.8ohm SOCC out of Mini Pro Tank 2.That's one juice, I tend to still like others 6-7.5 watts. My next step is to grab some AFC bases but Sweet Vapes was out of stock of one's for the Mini and Mt Baker Vapor only sell the full size ones I'll check your link. I found them for 8$ at a website from Phil Busardo Taste Your Juice site, but MBV wanted 5$ for full size and Sweet Vapes was about 5$ for Mini AFC's a lot cheaper then buying new clearomizer tanks

Hmm good price at discountvapers, I might order from there since much cheaper then Sweet Vapes. But is V3 the best version? I figure it's the newest version. I'll have to look into it more and the difference between the versions...glad I found that link in your reply Katya

Guess they only have the V2 in stock..I need 4 if I want one for each. I might just go ahead and grab them or just get couple now and wait to see if get V3 in I'm not sure if V3 is much better?

    No you can't
I'll presume your using cotton wicks even if not prime the wicks prior to using and let it soak a good five minute.

Other then that your voltage or wattage could be to high.

Once you burn cotton the wick is no good ànd needs to be replace.

Nothing else will give a burnt taste though liquid flàvorbis effected with a dirty wick or coil

I think they're garbage and improperly built. That or they're going through growing pains. The pictures of the coils I got don't look anything like the ones in that sun-vapers link. The cotton is so over-stuffed I don't think I could have pulled out the cotton even before the coil was used, post-gunk forget about it. I wish I had taken some pictures now but I threw them out. I've taken to almost always rewicking with cotton, even new silica coils, very loose through the coil and still with flavor wicks. Currently using Fasttech coil assemblies.

I have both the V1 and the V3 airflow bases for my PT2 tanks. I prefer the V3, but I've never tried a V2. I  my PT2s, but I also rebuild my own coils, so I get more control over the quality. I know a lot of people think PT2s are rubbish, but they are my daily go-to tanks. I happily tootle-puff with them, and they work for ME.

I think that Kanger only makes the V1 and V2 nowadays--not sure. One never knows with Kanger. :)

The 2 and 3 are easier to use, but they all work. I have V1 and whatever came with my Aerotank V2 and Emow.

I was able to order 4 V3s from SweetVapes today. Already tracking on USPS. Anyway I think the V3s are better than the 1s and 2s, imho.

After trying the STM and the STPlus and a couple other cloudchasers I have returned to PT2s, Evods and a coupla Eleaf GS Ms, as I'm a tootler and proud of it. I was a smoker, 2-3 PAD, not a latest fadder.

I liked that price better though but not for Mini I guess version dont matter much if all work the same

I didn't get mine through Sun Vapes but there the exact same ones. With the MT32 labeled box. I haven't tried to rewick one yet but they look like be easy just like old silica ones.
I got mine from Mt Baker Vapor but the ones here at Sweet Vapes the same and had pictures of box also.

I had some clone silica ones that was packed with so much silica and just real nasty!

I just had one that was super gunked up. Most of silica ones I always let sit and dry or rinsed and dry burn before I had got into rewicking. I had problems with the first silica one I did wet with silica tearing and not coming out. I probably could of let it sit and juice dry up (try that in future to see which is easier) but I just rinsed away some of gunk and dry burnt this one just a little, not like I normally did to the silica but I knew it was going in trash if couldn't rewick so didn't care if burnt the cotton. I took my tweezers and ran between the wires of coil gently and seemed to help break free the cotton wick from gunk and it came out. (Not the easiest but I had silica ones I couldn't rewick cause was too gunked. In past week this coils seen 5 flavors and last 2 being very sweet and dark.) I then rinsed just wire coil and dry burnt the coil then rinsed off the gunk ashes off coil. Letting air dry will rewick tomorrow.

I would like to let the cotton air dry instead of the slight dry burn I gave it and try that way. I just took it out of tank and wanted to try it now, should be easier maybe if was dry...I'll play around and find best way for me. But possible and I had silica ones I couldn't rewick cause of pulling wire wick out trying to pull out silica that was just as gunked

The protank, protank2 and mini protank2 were my favorite tanks until I moved on to the gs airs anyway I always rebuilt the coils even when new. To avoid hassles buy the premade kanthal usually 50 come in a pack, they are the resistance/non resistance type. Buy the 1.8ohm ones wrap it on a 1.5mm drill bit and put Japanese cotton in it, it's a godly vape with no spitting, leaking and very little condensation if any.

I love the new SOCC Japanese Organic, if gets gunked up bad where I have trouble pulling old cotton out to rewick with new I will burn the cotton wick some that will get the most gunked up ones out of coils. I use small toothpick to run through coil then make easier to guide new organic cotton through, rinse off gunk and any burnt residue then dry burn just coil, rinse again to get any residue from dry burn off, then let air dry. Rewick with Organic cotton and good to go again, just like new! I do got some Japanese Organic Cotton coming as I think it's got better taste then just Organic cotton balls. But I heard if boil it makes for better flavor, I guess changes the texture some...idk I'll try some but I just feel IMO that Organic cotton balls don't taste bad, just with the Japanese I seemed to get stronger flavor. Like its muted a little with the organic cotton ball cotton. I'll find what I prefer. But tweezers, toothpick and old battery to dry burn and some rinsing under water an then cotton to rewick and you got good as new coils again. For 5$ a 5 pack of Silica that I immediately rewick or 6$ for 5 pack to start with Japanese and I think they have slightly different base of coil then silica ones...I'll say I like this method better then rinsing and just dry burning silica and the cotton wicks way better, with better flavor. Saves money to buy more flavors of juice!

Any of you that used PT2'S or 3s any Kangertech Clearomizer tanks in past with just silica coils need to revisit them with the Japanese Organic Cotton coils! Get a AFC base to adjust airflow and great MTL tank, also can do some lung vapes also. Cheap coils, good taste and low watts to not vape through the juice like high watts :)
