Thanks very much for your comments.

Also - how tight we should screw the tank together? I seem to get better wicking/bubbles when I don't screw it too tight. Or we shouldn't see bubbles at all?

Screw it on to the battery until you feel it make contact then 1/4 to 1/2 a turn more. You want snug but not tight. If you have to use pressure to unscrew it it's to tight.

Have you tried a high quality store-bought juice? There is a bit of a science to making e-liquid that vapes well. Ingredients bought at Walmart aren't necessarily the same as those a professional e-liquid lab uses.

On paper, glycerol is glycerol. Many experienced DIY-ers use Humco brand from Walmart, while others claim that it doesn't taste good. However, as long as it's USP (pharma) grade, it's fine, just needs to be diluted. 12-17% distilled water is most common dilution.

I have plenty of store bought juice too, yes.

And the one I make - I use AG, PG and nicotine bought from Totally Wicked.

Yeah, I agree that Decadent Vapours AG is magical. I used to use it when TW carried it. But now they discontinued, and I don't feel like ordering it from the UK...

I have thought maybe my vaping technique is not right?

From my earlier link:

1) Make sure that the atomizer coil is screwed into the base tightly--every time you refill; they often come not fully tightened from the manufacturer, or may have gotten loose through repeated refills.

2) Look at all the inner seals and gaskets to make sure they haven't become dislodged.

3) Make sure that you screw the tank into its base tightly. If it's not tight, it will leak.

4) When you screw your clearomizer into your battery, do not overtighten--screw it in only until it makes contact--no farther, or you may push the center post in too deep and cause all kinds of problems, including leaking. When the draw becomes tight or the taste and vapor production begin to diminish, replace the coil. This will happen sooner (even as soon as one day of heavy use) if you're using dark, viscous, or very sweet juices. The old coil can be cleaned and dry burned.

OP, you've received a lot of great advice so far, and I think it's all pretty much right on. One thing to question is, did you get a genuine Kanger Protank and Protank heads or did you get the knockoffs? I've heard that a lot of people are having burnt problems with the "clone" Kanger products. The genuine article seems to perform well. Just another thought to consider.

Yes, I also was thinking about this but I'm 99% sure I have genuine tanks & coils as I bought them from a reputable UK seller.

Packaging etc. also looks all good & genuine.

Today I'm trying a new set-up:

Protank 2 MINI on my Provari (with an adapter).

4V, 70/30 juice - so far so good! :)

I'm afraid to try 50/50 juice though as it could again bring up the burnt taste...

Could it be that Protank 2 and Protank 2 MINI perform differently? As in essence they're same, nope?

MANY THANKS for all the help received so far!

Andy

I've found that with Protanks, there is a great spectrum of reliability with the stock coil heads. Some of mine tend to err on the side of dry, others flood the second the tank is halfway full. The stock heads are ok, but once you start recoiling them yourself, you will be able to tell the difference. I use 3mm silica wick, and 32 gauge kanthal.

IMO, the the Protank 2 and the Mini vape about the same to me. I have yet to get any flooding on my Mini though. There has been some flooding with my Protank 2. (This is the opposite problem that you've been having though.) Anyway, after you fill it up, just remember to give it a few primer puffs every once in awhile so you can keep those wicks wet. In theory, the tanks should vape the same, but they do have a different connection to your device, so the airflow is different as well. This will affect the way they vape, but anecdotally, they vape about the same to me. Good luck!

I had the same thing happen. Sounds like you didn't "prime" it enough when you first used it. Not doing so has resulted in a burnt wick and a crusty coil. Next time you change them out take a few draws (like puffing on a pipe) before you even attach the tank to the battery. You should se a bubble or two. Give it about 10-15 seconds and prime it again. Then attach it to the battery and see how that works! :)

Hello Everyone!

This is my first post on ECF but I have spent last few weeks reading thousands of posts here. Many Thanks for all the advice and tips I have learned so far! :)

I'm relatively new to vaping (1month+) but LOVE IT SO MUCH that I would really hate giving it up because of the technical issues I'm having with protanks. I quit analogues on the same day I bought my first cig-alike kit and have never looked back. I don't want normal cigarettes anymore as I do like vaping so much better! (I'm still wondering why didn't I switch sooner?).

Anyway, I'm having SEVERE problems getting Protanks 2 work right for me...

I have 5 x Protank 2, 5 x Protank 2 mini + 4 x Ego batteries and Provari.

I'm using DIY juice, only 3% nicotine (YEP, I made that progress very fast) usually 70/30, PG/VG. The juice is not thick at all (bubbles go up in tank very quickly, it's very thin).

NO MATTER what I do, I get burnt taste with it! I have tried everything:

* Washing everything before use;
* Taking out flavour wicks
* Changing tons of heads
* Changing voltage from 3 up to 5 volts.

No matter what I do, I can take 3-4 normal draws and then I'll get a burnt one.

To me it looks like it simply does not wick fast enough. It's not like I'm chain vaping though - I usually take a 5 minute vaping break every hour.

The only way I get it work to some extent is un-screwing tank a little bit, then see bubbles, and screw it back - this works for 2-3 hits. Then again I have to un-screw tank to see some bubbles and get some wicking going on.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

I'm basically giving up on Protanks and already ordered some Boge and Smoktech cartomizers, hopefully they'll work hassle free. What's your opinion on this switch from protanks to cartomizers? Re-filling is really not a problem for me as I'm in front of PC all day long.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy

Hmmm, Ok, I think I know what the issue might be, I vape 100% VG super thick juice, And also use Protanks, but I only get this issue "now" when it's planed for (I'll explain in a few), Sometimes the coil gets insulated with gunk, Kinda like a frying pan with some foods, you get a layer of gunk on the bottom and if you continue cooking without removing it, it ruins the food as it burns... So now onto the coil, even if the wick is getting juice all it's doing is building up more gunk on the coil and trapping heat inside the layer of buildup and burning, I have 2 juices that do this to me and will ruin a coil in a day, at first I thought it was dry hits but then realized how wet the wicks were, I went through all the same steps you did, Removing wicks and so on, Then I made the connection... My damn juice, (Ok, now to explain when it still happens to me) It only happens now on heads I plan to rebuild or throw out as I only vape that juicee on them heads... lol, But on a less funny note I burned up 2 HH357 custume atomizers before I figured this out, 50 bucks down the drain... So not positive if this is your exact issue or not but might save you some money to figure this out before you do like I did, as I see some talk of dripping atomizers in a few posts... Anyway, I love my Kanger tanks and hope you get it figured out, good luck

This is also a very good point, along the same lines.

LOL, guess I should have read all before posting

I have a protank II, an evod tank, and a Davide, all take the same head, but the DAvide out preforms them all with ease

I kinda hate to admit it cause I am a Kanger fan, But same thing here, right out of the box my Davide blew my other tanks away, lighter draw and all it just out performs the rest in flavor throat hit and vapor , something about that base just makes it better, I put the Davide base on my protank II and it was just night and day.

Kinda made me feel cheap and dirty, so I switched them back... lol

So have to admit Davide has my attention... That don't sound right either....

LOL. I read somewhere they were made to be interchangeable after a couple of corrections. Sooo, no shame should be involved.

to the OP.
On one of my protanks, I too had a dry hit once in a while. So all I did was slightly lift up the little rubber castket about 1mm,(did not flip it, or even take it off). I did that to allow the wicks to have a little more room to work properly. And it worked for me.
On the subject of carto tanks. A small learning curve but does deliver the best in flavor and longevity(at least for me).

Good luck
:)

Protank 2 is a really airy device (as opposed to evod), I found that I get the best results by using a strong 3-4 seconds inhale after I hear the "vaporizing" sound (might vary between devices).

The burnt taste happened to me as well after I got a tooth removed and was dangerous to create pressure in my mouth, so I used very light inhales. At that time I lowered the power from 7.5 W to 5.5 W and I was back on track.
