I have been rebuilding my Protank heads for a few weeks now and have had wildly inconsistent results. About half of them seemed to work just fine, and about half of them had hot legs, resulting in the burnt rubber taste. I tried wrapping the legs back onto themselves to lower the resistance and decrease heat, but had no more success than before. Between yesterday and today I rebuilt the same head at least 15 times and every single time, burnt rubber taste.
I looked at other heads I built, and I noticed the rubber grommet at the bottom on some were more clear, like they were made from silicone, and on the others, notably the one that was being such a pain, were more opaque, like they were made from rubber.
I rebuilt the coil one more time, using a suspected silicone grommet, and it was perfect. No burnt taste. I didn't wrap the legs back on themselves, didn't use NR wire for the legs, nothing. Just pushed them through and cut them off.
My suspicion is that the Protank heads are made using either rubber or silicone grommets, and if you have one with a rubber grommet then the likelihood of getting a hot leg that results in a burnt taste is higher. I know a lot of people seem to be able to rebuild them with rubber grommets with no problem, but if you're having issues, try the silicone grommets. If you need to buy them, this is the only place I've seen that sells them: AGA Series Positive Post Insulators - 10 pack - Kidney Puncher
