I think it would work if you drilled out the cartomizer. I don't think you would be able to drill the threads on the adaptor for the Protege. It is recessed in the well and there is no space between the center post and the outer threads. You might be able to dremel a slot on the top of the post but not sure how that would work.
I have an adaptor for the M401 from PS that has two slots cut into it.
On the left is the 901 adaptor and on the right is the M401. I think if the 901 were like the M401 it would work with cartomizers.. I would start with one slot and see how that works first. I believe you can get the post out of the adaptor with a little persuasion.. Hammer and something the right size. Small socket perhaps. Ask Steve about that.

WOW what is that one of those battery extensions for the new manual batteries that has a hole drilled in it? You can pick those up for far less than that....

What it is.... is one end is 901 and the other end is 808 so you screw it on the 901 then screw on the 808 works perfect!
You can also get the 510 to 901 and 510 to 801 and Ect...

Yea the 901 atomizer works on the KR battery because of that little hole in the side of the 901 atomizer. But it doesn't work the other way around. Cant put a cartomizer on a 901 battery without modification. But this battery extension thingy will do the trick with a tiny hole drilled in the side. They have a hole down the center already so it should work well. Just have to be careful you don't drill through one of the wires in there...lol... A careful drill and stop just as you go through the case. I am going to order a few to try...
I dont have a way to drill so I just got the 6.99 adaptor .. its already made so it was good to go

Hard to tell until I have one in my hands, but I'm guessing that cutting a slot in the Protege 901 adapter might work as well, without adding any extra length. Some tricky work with the dremel though.

Where there is a will there is a way... lol... You could always drill a hole in the side of the cartomizer... just into the part where the threads are. I tried this and couldn't find a drill bit small enough to cut the stainless steel. I read other threads where folks have done this with success though. But you would have to drill each one you want to use..
If you don't mind, could you measure the length of that adapter or even the overall length with the cartomizer attached?

Don't have one but from the pics they're just a little more than half the size of a kr808 cartomizer. My manual batt adapter is 3/4 in so that would be about right.
here's what i did for the protege cartomizer solution:
ordered the protege with 801 adapter
ordered one 801 to 901 adapter from vaprlife
drilled a small hole in the threaded part of the adapter, where the carto fits on
pure vaping bliss!

Looks good. I just happen to have one of those that I got for my VAPRE51. Should have thought of that! Those adapters are quite small. You can also get 'em from LiteCig.
I have drilled a single 1/16 in hole in 901 batts to make them work with the kr808carts, but it didn't work with the greencig ones. I think you need a slot or 2 for that to work.
BTW, what size hole did you drill? One or two?
1mm hole, just one...
and, I forgot, I had to remove the center pin and slot that too...
because even though there is a slot on the cartomizer, the pin is tapered so that it fits snug into the hole in the carto and seals it off...

I have 2 of those adapters 901 to cartomizer, and they are a nice hole on them. They are drilled on it before they are painted.

Ok don't have a tape measure without going to the garage.... so it is the same size as the 901 cart excluding the part that plugs into the atty .... and excluding the threads on the adapter... so the black part of the adaptor...
