I learned some facts since he posted the story. Like you, it was pretty amazing all the troubles they gave him. What I learned was that due to the environmental impact of using petroleum based coatings for the wiring harnesses, manufacturers started using a different system.

It was not petro based, but rather rather from soybeans. Chrysler Corp was one of the first to make the change, and problems arose very quickly with Jeep vehicles, which they owned. Some of that came from campers and outdoors people who would often be parked somewhere in the woods, but I can see it happening to anyone with a large rodent population. Evidently the new harness coating is quite tasty for gnawing animals - squirrels. mice, etc. leading the pack. As far as I know, the problem still exists and now I see a lot of reports for Honda vehicles joining the group of those having to replace harnesses multiple times.

As an aside, I understand that Honda parts departments now have a part number for a spray coating to be used on your wiring, which is heavily laced with fiery pepper extract.
Although I would have thought this was a joke on your part, it's so bizarre that it must be true. Soybeans? That's pigfeed. Keep it out of my vehicle please.
You've got a machine which runs on a petroleum fuel, which may need a petroleum lubricant to keep it healthy, and you're worried about a smidgeon of coating. Please, give me a break.
Sorry you had such a hard time gin.

It's not a new idea. Still not a good one, but not new.

Soybean Car - The Henry Ford

I remember reading something, probably decades ago now, indicating that Ford had been totally fascinated by Carver's work with Soybeans. I don't recall them mentioning the car, but I expect they did (and that I forgot it).

Where are my keys? ;)

Probably got stuck in the tofu. Hold off on the stir fry until you find them.
