Since I open the back door when I vape (we haven't started using our heating yet) I can hear a whole bunch of chickens! :) Which makes me deeply thankful I don't own chickens, I understand the allure of fresh laid eggs, but they seem like a LOT of work.

I’d like to have some but wouldn’t want to deal with them in the winter!

I used to raise chickens .. just enough for the family unlike the cattle, which we raised for profit as well as meat..

But chickens are super easy...

We got an old trailer (think tractor-trailer.. 18 wheeler variety) that was water tight for 50 bucks... turned it into a coop, ran electric to it for the heat lamps, fenced it nicely and Bob's your uncle... didn't spend much at all...

Other than that they just need water, they scratch for much of their food and you feed them some corn and oyster shell as well... keep their wings clipped and they practically take care of themselves. .. gather eggs and butcher is the main work.

Yes.... (if you aren't slightly frightened of them like I am) but I have cared for chickens (with my kiddo present, so I had to hide my fear, LOL) while staying on a farm. I prefer my eggs in cartons (and plenty of folks to buy them from around here) and my meat labeled as "Meat" not staring me in the eye mournfully and whatnot. LOL, I am not a tough cookie with animals, in fact my mom got into this "Ship me organic meat," deal for a while during my childhood and I hated it. It always tasted too much like what it was--- a lovely, free-range animal, slaughtered on my behalf.

I did go vegetarian for a while in my idealistic teen years but I don't do so well on that diet. :)

That's funny!!!!!! What do you guys cook on? Campfires? Hotplates? Candles????
Flat top electric, maybe it's induction coils? I despise them, they are oK once you figure them out, but they take too long to respond to changes. Like if you want to heat something quick and turn it way up, it's like...nothing...nothing...nothing...BOILING OVER!!!

Then you turn it down and it takes minutes before its cool enough where it won't just boil over again...

I learned to cook on gas flame, in the restaurants I worked at...gas flames, house I grew up in, gas flames...been stuck with them damned induction heating flat tops for about ten years now...did I mention that I hate them:evil::-x
