We saw our first hummingbird of the season just two hours ago. This is as late as they have been in quite some time. Normally they initially arrive in week one or two of April. I'm actually hoping for less this year. We had tons of them last year and it just gets out of control. Happily we have a pair of red shoulder hawks nesting out back. Keeps the snakes away.Happy day today, we have attracted a hummingbird to a feeder at our new house! I hope we can get a bunch of them here like at our old place. The other birds we have visiting are are a good mix of songbirds, blue birds, and several woodpecker varieties.
A couple of the crows have taken a liking to the suet, but they really are too large to perch and feed, so they kind of hop up, flap their wings and clumsily peck at the suet basket, ( I like crows)pretty funny to watch. Nice cup of warm tea in hand, not a bad way to spend a lazy rainy Sunday...
Righto. I'm painting my house this spring but have to fix all the woodpecker damage before I can get started.Wow! It must be great to live in a place where you can enjoy nature and birds so much! Congrats.

Thanks Tomasius, actually we moved into a more urban area than we were at before, so I had my doubts, but the neiborhood is like a little oasis amid a busy highway interchange. We don't have the deer and coyotes like we had at the other place.Wow! It must be great to live in a place where you can enjoy nature and birds so much! Congrats.

I'm a little fortunate. The holes they made are not all the way through so I don't have the problem of no backing for the filler. The carpenter bees dig tunnels in the wood to lay their eggs and the woodpeckers peck the tunnels out chasing after them. Good luck painting your house. Sounds like anything you do will be an improvement.LOL, that's the top of my list too Bronze, I already bought the spray gun, I've got a lot of caulking and a few trim boards to replace first though. Right now we call our place the pimiento cheese house, an odd shade of yellow with red trim. That's going to change in the next few weeks.
We also have a nesting pair of red tailed Hawks, everyday I get to hear their screeeeee's . Seems to be a lot of them in NC. My first sighting of a hummer was about a week back, but that was a one time visit from a passing bird, this one has been visiting for a couple days now. I need to pick up a couple shrimp plants and get them into pots.
Sorry to hear that you got hurt, it can really be a set back. Enjoy your visit with your son, reminds me I need to take some time and go up north and visit my dad and two brothers, we have lost quite a few family members the past couple years...getting older isn't for the faint of heart...I guess that means it's time for me to stop being lazy and put the feeders out..
Falling really messed me up for a while, and I'm so far behind on things this year.. I haven't even much thought about the hummingbirds..
My son is coming to visit in a week..I haven't seen him since my daughter died, (3 and a half years ago) and I'm so very happy he's coming! I'll be cooking up a storm!![]()

Well, 1. it is not necessary because there is plenty of red color on feeders and, 2. it is petroleum based which may be harmful to the birds.I heard or read that adding food color is bad for hummers. Better to be safe than sorry and not use it at all

here is one of early babies being fed. A few years later we switched to a more natural method. Sorry it's so grainy. It was a cheapy camera.
